Cloverfield (2008)
9/10
After all someone might say it's a love story....
17 January 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I have to say that I haven't had so much fun in a movie theater in such a long time. Cloverfield brought back a sense of excitement and delight for me.

The movie draws you in, makes you a part of the experience. It succeeds primarily because of two things; what you see and what you hear.

The movie does not have a major actor stealing the screen. Everyone is treaded just about equal. As the viewer you feel you are with the group as you are seeing the movie from the first person view. You feel connected to the characters as you understand that because of their loss, they have to set something right and not escape from the city. The movie draws you in and you feel like you are a part of the action.

There is no music. Ambient sounds such as creeks and thumps don't distract you from looking at all the finer details. You stay focused on what's important and constantly entertained.

One thing you must remember going into this movie. Remember the first 10 seconds of the movie (the stuff that comes right after the Star Trek teaser). If you keep that in mind everything will make sense and make the movie more pleasurable.

The Island (2005)
9/10
The blockbuster you have been waiting for!
9 July 2005
This movie was perfect in its own genre. The movie is full of great visuals, fun explosions, cool chases and very awesome suspense sequences. Unlike many other similar movies The Island has above average acting and maybe a single usage of a one liner.

My only disappointments were the music selection in a few chase scenes, and the futuristic L.A. The music was just too loud and unnecessary for the scene. The futuristic look of L.A. was not that great because it seemed that it was set in 2006. It would have been nice to see more conceptual stuff like the cars in Minority Report.

The movie is rather long, but it never gets boring, so you are bound to enjoy it.

What is going on?
9 March 2004
This movie is confusing. Characters interact with each other but you have no idea what is going on. As the movie progresses we learn that some girl is missing. What girl? Some important girl that dyed her hair. Why are so many government officers looking for her is unknown. Val Kilmer volunteers to help out the search in any way possible. Still, its uncertain why the girl is missing and who she is. As the movie progresses little pieces of information show what really is going on. Slowly Kilmer's character goes on his own to solve the mystery. Overall this movie's dialogue was superb. The acting and directing is good too. The sound is also good. In fact this movie was nearly perfect if it wasn't for the massive confusion that it brings upon the audience. Definitely worth a watch. 4.5 out of 5.

Very nice thrill ride ...
20 January 2004
I was lucky enough to score some screening tickets for my friends and I in Atlanta. Going into this movie I was afraid that the acting will be horrible and the movie will be cheesy and crappy. Oh boy was I wrong! Butterfly Effect is a damn good movie. It captures you and takes on a ride. Usually I get distracted during a boring part of a movie and change my sitting position and check the time. Not once did I do such a thing during the film. Anyways, the movie starts of a bit weird and slow. The presences of unknown blackouts capture the viewer. As we begin to understand what is going a whole word of possibility of that Evan can do becomes mind-boogling. The effects that are used during the film are pretty cool. The difference in the colors during the alternative futures set the mood really well. Bress and Gruber's directing style takes the movie and makes it unique. The acting is good. Ashton's character goes through a range of emotions and his presence presents some comedy in serious scenes. However, in the end the comic reliefs deter away from the seriousness of the situation. Overall I would give this movie 8.5 out of 10. Definitely worth seeing when it comes out.

Elephant (2003)
10/10
Brilliant
15 January 2004
I thought this was just going to be some lame attempt at an artsy movie. Boy was I wrong. Elephant is one of my favorite films. The movie starts of weird. It tells stories of one tragic day through the students that lived through it (for the mast part). The way that each character interacts with other students and how the camera switches perspectives each time we follow a different student is simply awesome, if not brilliant. The high contrast of the environment makes this movie stand out too. It was filmed during the fall so that each outside shot is lit up by the wonderful colors of the trees. The inside shots exhibit different lighting and colored walls that add to the movie. Another thing to point out would be the actors and actresses. Notice how each character is playing themselves; the students are named like the actual people playing them. They are just average teenagers. This makes the movie stand out even more. No more twenty year olds playing teen parts just to make them seem attractive. Anyways, watching this movie never gets boring. It's like watching a tale from different people's perspective. I just wish that this movie was longer to enjoy it somewhat more. I give it 10 out of 10!

Simple but yet complex...
8 January 2004
I watched this movie a part in one of my classes here at University of Georgia. At first the movie did not seem complex at all until you start to notice the social hierarchy. The way that the social position of characters changes as they progress from civilization to nature is amazing. It takes a bit to figure it out once the movie is over but its great. The movie itself is pretty nice and fairly interesting for its time.

How to Deal (2003)
5/10
Not a bad movie, honestly ...
16 July 2003
On Tuesday I was able to attend a public screening of How To Deal staring the lovely Mandy More. Going in I expected it to be another cheesy flick that lacks many aspects of a good movie but I was really happy of how it went. The basic plot behind this movie is that Mandy's character Halley Martin sees many flaws in the love in the relationships of the people she knows that she fails to see that true love exists. This is mostly due to the splitting of her parents as well as the marriage of her sister. As the movie develops she begins to fall for Macon, played by Trent Ford, who is this weird guy. So, anyways the movie's flow is not that great. There are a few points in the movie where the course of action takes a strange plunge. This did not go well with the audience. I really don't want to give anything away but the course of action changes a whole 180 degrees and leaves you a bit confused. Anyways the movie is easy to deal with. There aren't that many really cheesy moments and the acting is actually pretty good. One of the highlights of the movie was the Halley's grandmother who is hopped up on marijuana. There are also some really good laughs halfway through the movie, as well as an easy to come to ending. Overall this movie is not just for anyone. It's a simple movie you can take your date to making it not that bad. I would have to give it 2.5 stars out of 5.

When you think of crappy movies in the mid 90s thing of this one !
11 October 2002
I accidentally got this movie through Netflix. Thinking it could be an interesting movie I sat down to watch this. As soon as the movie started I reached for the FF button. I mean naked girls who place a necklace on a person and bite him automatically make him a vampire. Now flash forward about 200 years and we are in the 90s where we meet a 17 year old who is not giving it up to her boyfriend. Anyway through an hour of some messed up boring crap the movie ends. It's so awful I wanted to burn the DVD to the far depths of hell. The only thing separating this movie from Battlefield Earth is the boobies seen throughout the movie. Also vampires shoot out bolts of electricity though their arms.

Funny...
8 June 2002
For some strange reason I was flipping through channels and came across this move on Starz. I have to say that I enjoyed it and that there were any major lame scenes and allot of really enjoyable parts. The acting was alright and all of the cast did a fine job. If you are in a mood for hour and a half of an enjoyable romantic comedy this is the movie for ya!

Panic Room (2002)
10/10
Another awesome movie...
1 April 2002
I have walked in to see Panic Room with thinking its going to be another sleeper. Little did I know that the director of this movie is David Fincher. You might remember that he did some awesome movies like Fight Club and Se7en. Anyway as soon as the movie starts you feel confused by the unique way of the beginning credits. As the movie progresses we see some awesome effects such as the camera moving between walls, going across the house in a very very unique manner and seeing a fair amount of slow motion shots to create a great sense of suspense. Overall I was amazed by the directing. The acting was was very good. The move did kind of start slow but there were fair amounts of twists and small humor. So if you liked David Fincher previous movies you should enjoy Panic Room. I give it 9.5 out of 10.

The Score (2001)
9/10
Good movie...
10 July 2001
Starting off a bit slow The Score gave me a feeling that the movie is going to suck. But as the movie progressed it became somewhat more interesting. There were a couple of laughs and most of the story is easy to follow. The acting was not bad, but putting all of these actors in a room does not make any sort of magic. Anyways as we progress through the movie we come across a few surprises and a really neat ending. If you want to see a non-sleeper movie go see The Score.

MOST AWFUL MOVIE MADE !
7 July 2001
Ok I just saw this movie and I have to say that it is the worst movie that I have ever seen. The acting was really bad, the whole futuristic concepts were awful, the CG was not that good, there are times where the story gets a bit confusing, and there is more stupid crap than any other movie I have seen. I would rather watch Tomb Raider movie three times in a row than this. It is horrible. If you get a chanse to see this movie, please don't. Instead go rent a river dance special. I guarantee you that is better than Battlefield Earth. I just want to know what was John Travolta thinking when he decided to do this movie...

Pootie Tang (2001)

Stupidly funny...
30 June 2001
This movie was really hilarious. The movie shows off so many out of place characters and events that it's stupid not to laugh. The performance of all of the characters was OK though Chris Rock was not that funny. The movie could have been a bit better if it was longer and the laughs were to be distributed through the whole movie. Anyway if want to laugh your ass of for about an hour go see Pootie Tang. Sa Da Tay...

AWESOME FROM THE BEGINNING TO THE END !
25 June 2001
This movie is really great. From the beginning of the movie you are confused. The story is told backwards so you see the ending first. And the whole time you are considering what happened it the beginning to figure out what's going on. Until you see the end of the movie you are left puzzling for an answer. I would recommend you see this movie with friends because it will create a long conversation over the ending/beginning of the movie...

Is it over yet?
25 June 2001
This movie sucked so much. The acting sucked, the directing sucked, the plot sucked, and the movie was really boring. Half of the time I was waiting for something interesting to happen but that never came to. I wish that they had made the movie based on the adventures that the Lara Croft from the video game had. Anyway if you want to stare at big boobs and fat lips for hour and a half this movie is for you. If you want something that resembles a video game go watch Super Mario Brothers. At least that movie is better than this crap.
