Spooky, rather than scary
16 January 2024
I'm giving this a higher rating than most. I feel it's just the kind of spooky we need these days. The weird "rumors" which can't be quite confirmed, add to the delight I feel when I hear about these kind of stories. It was like a fleshed-out "Tales from the Darkside", if you remember that show. Not anything that will keep you up at night, but just something that niggles at your brain now and then.

If you don't care for it, that's on you, and I won't try to talk you into it, but I see the making of a classic. You know what those are, right? Give it a few years and see what you think of it. This one can probably be stretched out to 2 1/2 hours on network tv. It's the kind of childhood "horror" we all need to remember as adults.

I see it becoming a cult classic
10 September 2022
It wasn't completely perfect. There are more than a few plot holes, but also some surprising and unexpected twists that make it better than most Netflix movies. Quite a few folks are comparing it to Misery, but with the voodoo subtext, it reminds me more of "The Believers" which is an older film not seen much these days. Please check that one out and see what you think. "Skeleton Key" has some of the same elements. It definitely kept me interested.

I'll be sure watch it again to try to catch things I missed the first time around. I'm willing consider it a cult classic, but maybe that's just me.

Still processing...

Warning: Spoilers
I liked the movie. Some things were done really well, while others fell a bit flat. Like any Jordan Peele movie, you have to pay attention. It will take several times of watching before I really get what just happened.

I liked the chimp sub-plot. Maybe not everyone remembers the news story from 15-ish years ago where a chimp ripped off a woman's face. A friend of mine dated a zookeeper several years back and he said the most terrifying animal in a zoo is an adult male chimp. You don't ever look them in the eye, EVER! I think OJ even said something like this (not referring to chimps, though). So, I appreciated this little bit in the movie.

That's it for now.

Say, has anybody seen my sweet Gypsy Rose?

Warning: Spoilers
I liked it. I do think it could have been a bit more fleshed out, but it was decent. Kind of the ultimate bully revenge movie in a way. For a minute when they first introduced Sue Ann's daughter, I thought she was going end up being the result of a rape suffered during Sue Ann's teen years, but that would have made her too old to be known by the current-day teens.

The Munchausen's by proxy twist was interesting, too.

Not as interesting as I remembered.

Warning: Spoilers
Many years ago, while camping with our family, my older sister and I watched this movie on a black & white tv in our camper. Everyone else was asleep. At the point where the blood started dripping into the baby's mouth, my sister said, "UGH, let's quit watching this crap!" Off went the tv and we went to bed.

I have tried for years to remember the name of this movie. My sister has unfortunately passed away, so I couldn't ask her if she knew. Finally I figured it out and came to imdb to try find out more plot details.

Through the magic of streaming television services, i was finally able to watch the rest of the movie several days ago. I was not missing much. I'm glad to have some resolution, I guess. Very low entertainment value.

Us (II) (2019)

I enjoyed it. Mostly what I expected. A fan!

Warning: Spoilers
For one reason or another, I didn't see "Get Out" until several months after it was released. I felt like I missed something by not paying close attention to the small details, so this time, I was determined to do so from the beginning. The very first image on the screen when US begins is of a television commercial. But in the left part of the screen, there is a shelf with videos. Those videos were titled: Man with two Brains. "Tuesday Nite" (handwritten), The Goonies, and C.H.U.D. Somehow, these would figure prominently in the movie.

Despite my promise to myself, before long, I was lost in the story. And that's fine. A movie is supposed to be relaxation and a bit of mindlessness. I remember being a bit surprised that we were carried along so quickly.

My husband has often said that he considers a movie as "good" if he continues to think about it for days. Sudden thoughts about the plot popping into my head are also a good indication for me that I like a movie.

One of the first "after-effects" about US is that I began to wonder, how was it, exactly, that Addie knew how to get to the underground area? Once she went back to Merlin's Forest, she went right to the door and followed the maze down to where the Tethered lived, without faltering. And as a young child, she couldn't speak once she returned. Why? Because none of them could speak! She had to learn with time. The only reason Red could speak was because she was Addie!

I suspect it's going to take several days for me to work out all these issues. I think it was a very good effort by Mr. Peele and I look forward to the next one.

More than one episode?

Is there going to be more episodes? I liked this show. It reminds me of "Queer Eye", but for women.

Warning: Spoilers
Definitely better and more realistic than most of what you see on television. I appreciate the attention to detail. I was born, raised and still live in Indiana. I think this is a fairly accurate representation of life there during this time frame.

However...I am several years older than the main characters. To me, there is a much more '70's feel to the show than '80's, but that may also be part of its genius. As a land-locked state, Indiana is often way behind the "coasts" in terms of fashion, pop culture, etc. This was even more true during the '80's before the internet.

My sense is Hawkins is a "town" (we would call it a city) of about 20,000-30,000. My home town was much smaller, so some of the things Hawkins had, we didn't. Likely, the school would have been a "junior high", though, rather than a "middle school." In a bigger city, there might have been middle schools (my uncle taught at one), but for a town the size of Hawkins, the switch wasn't made until much later. But it's too late to change now, so don't worry about it!

In the '80's, "preppy" was really big in Indiana. I was in college in the '80's and it was all the rage. It was also the beginning of "designer" clothing. So let's bring out the Fair Isle sweaters, penny loafers, oxford cloth shirts. Maybe some waffle stompers, down vests (see "Back to the Future") and Izod shirts, OK?

Just a few thoughts.

Almost perfect
21 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Just a few reasons why it wasn't absolutely perfect: A lot of the really funny moments were given away in the trailer and that's not fair. Also, I wondered about the title. It wasn't the most clever, but I guess it got the point across.

It was kind of a long movie, but I felt the story could have gone on forever (and it seems it has). I wanted to know more about Kumail and Emily.

The main take-away for me, though, was the fact that Emily still slept with and fell in love with Kumail, even though his living conditions were less-than-stellar. This is how one can recognize true love. If she's willing to make love with you on an air mattress, KEEP HER!

Try again
24 May 2017
I really wanted to like it more than I actually did. But I don't think it's the worst ever and it might actually attract some viewers when it's released on cable TV.

To me, it just felt like it was edited for time or something. Like if the movie had been 3 hours long, it might have been more humorous. Of course, if it had, there would have been a revolt!

Find another (better) script, Amy and Goldie, and start from scratch. I think you have chemistry, but baking soda and lemon juice can only get you so far.

Rich Hill (2014)
late review
17 July 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I just watched it yesterday, so forgive me for coming so late to the party.

This movie was depressing, but familiar. My small town, while not as small as Rich Hill, has pockets of poverty which are similar. There are hundreds of thousands of very small towns which have the same sorts of issues all over the U.S. But that's not the point. The film makers came from this area and still were able to leave and make something of themselves. I think, if you aren't familiar with this sort of poverty, you might not realize it exists and THAT was their point.

I loved Andrew, because he had so much hope. There was always a "reason" why they had to leave each home, even if it was because "God wanted us here". I could tell he was getting frustrated by the end, though. The 4th of July, when he bought fireworks for the neighbors and they set them off near the trailer park was great. Even though this took place a few years ago, the images were scenes of a life that could have happened 50 or 60 years ago. Quintessential, you might say of small town Midwestern USA.

Even though Appachey's mom could be a bit rough, I felt like she was real. Right there in the trenches with her kids, doing the best she could and just letting it all hang out. She talked about not having choices and that was sad to me. Everyone should have choices. I hope she can find some way to get out of the place she's in and I hope Appachey goes along with her. There is some vestige of intelligence deep inside them both and I hope there's a way for them to reach it.

Harley was a really sad case, but I felt even with all his problems, he was a good kid. It made me angry, though, when he was in the principal's office and was chastised and threatened for wanting to leave school. The principal showed very little understanding for Harley's problems and that was shameful. I do know the principal has a difficult job and likely some of his posturing was for show, but have a little sympathy. If something like what Harley has lived through had happened to his own child, I would hope he'd handle it better. I just think Harley would have been better served in a different environment.

As always, the tough thing about these kinds of movies is things are never solved. At least, not the way we want them to be. There's a lot of repetition and a lot of undesirable generational behavior. As someone who tries to see the "big picture", it's frustrating, because just when one of these people has something good happen to them, they fall right back into their old behavior and it's gone again. They can't seem to see their options, if indeed they ever had any in the first place.

There were no tears!
6 October 2004
Didn't anyone else notice that when Martin was crying there were no tears? How incredibly self-serving!

I agree with the poster that said Jill Clayburgh doesn't give much. Everything is said in a matter-of-fact fashion with very little emotion. I love the scene where she is getting dressed after having had sex with Alan Bates (yummy in this movie, BTW), she acts as though she just had a pedicure or something.

I watched the chopped up WE channel version, so I might have missed something, but it was all very emotionless.

I did think it was really dated. How could it not be?

The Forgotten (2004)
vagueness is it's strength
27 September 2004
I actually liked that there weren't a lot of specific details in this movie.

I know that sort of thing doesn't appeal to everyone, but who says you must know everything about the characters!? People are just spoiled because most movies follow a formula and this one didn't.

I'm smarter than that. I can fill in the blanks!

My prediction is that this movie will fade quickly at the box office, but take off in rentals in a few more months. And be remembered next year at Halloween!

I think the actors in the movie were smart too. Perhaps it's not "art", but I'll bet it was fun to make!

About Schmidt (2002)
I've never been to Spain, but I've been to Ogallala...
9 January 2003
We stayed at the Best Western and it was the same day that Jerry Garcia died... How's that for a memory!? Seriously, though, for a lot of this movie, I was bummed out. Now, of course, I remember the funny parts. I did like it, but it's one of those things that I'd have to see again to really appreciate. Maybe it was my mood or what's been going on in my life.

The Pledge (I) (2001)
You're both right!
2 December 2002
I can see both sides of the issue. On the one hand, this movie *was* made in the U.S., with (mostly) American actors. It has the backdrop of an American city and appears visually as an American film. But the story is definitely European. Someone mentioned that it was like a Greek tragedy and oh how right that person was! I guess the main problem is that most Americans don't really look for a dual meaning or an allegorical situation unless it is spelled out for them. I certainly don't. As soon as I saw Friedrich Durrenmatt's name attached, however, I knew there'd be more to it.

The pivotal scene for me when I knew I should pay attention, was Jerry's visit with the psychologist. It was like a necessary reminder for the dense folks in the audience.

I was disturbed by this film at a gut level. I felt as though Jerry should have at least mentioned his fears for the little girl to her mother. The ending might not have been so unpleasant if the mother had known the potential problems.

BTW, I think Sean did the right thing to divorce Madonna. Can you see *her* as Lori in this movie?

poverty at it's starkest level
14 August 2002
More than anything, this film demonstrated how limited people are when they are poor.

For example, even though these terrible things happened to Hank and Leticia, they had to keep doing what they were doing before, though Hank had a few more choices. Instead of getting rid of the chair his son died in, Hank washed it up and sat in it. Leticia had to keep using the purse that her son had bled onto, because she didn't have another. She had to go back to the same house and job because she didn't have any where else to go.

I felt as though these two people trusted each other even when they didn't trust themselves.

Mrs. Doubtfire with the vacuum cleaner
18 June 2002
We recently purchased this video to watch with our children. It had been a few years since I'd seen an unedited copy and I had completely forgotten how hilarious the scene where Mrs. Doubtfire dances with the vacuum cleaner and does air guitar with a broom were!

I laughed so hard that my kids wondered what my problem was!

"oh, you're gooood"
3 December 2001
Little bit of triteness, but I mean that in a nice way...

Someone else mentioned that this movie was like "Cool Hand Luke". That's an apt description. It even has the character, Lucille, in the guise of Rebecca Pidgeon.

You know, I'm not sure whether or not Fran really *was* Joe's wife or if she was, it was definitely not in the traditional sense. There was no real affection between them; she was just part of the team. The concept worked well.

When all is said and done, I have difficulty figuring out whether this was a movie or a game of strategy. Just too cool for words! I'm in love with Pinky!!
