RoboCop (1987)
2/10
Overrated schlock-fest movie.
9 May 2024
I don't understand all the praise. This was a garabeich movie. Peter Weller is one of the most boring actors there is. He gets overshadowed by the bad guy and Lewis. This is nothing but nonstop violence. Even that isn't very interesting. This just feels like going through the steps to tell you what you need to know. Kind of like on Star Wars III. They could have made Clarence something more but they didn't. He's just kind of a one dimensional baddie, and we know this is a waste of the actor. Oh yeah, the music sucks. It is schlocky, flashy garbage. Robocop himself is kind of crap. He can't move very fast, he's hard on the eyes. Who'd think he'd make a good cop?

Hated for being stylistically different.
10 February 2024
This movie is far from horrible. It has several weak points. Number one being Sofia Coppola's role. I think this missed many points of interest that people wanted to see. Al Pacino's character came across as a total pussy in this one! I was hoping to see the old explosive temper, and maybe a conflict with Andy Garcia over the love of his daughter? This is stylistically too different from the first two. As a standalone, this is maybe a cable movie at best. I compare this to "Hannibal," it has a similar slow pace and art style. The tension is rather smoothed over and cultured, like a fine Italian cheese..?? Anyway, I found the deal with the Catholic Church to be out of character for Michael.

Doom II: Hell on Earth (1994 Video Game)
7/10
Great game. disappointing ending.
3 November 2023
This was one great game! The soundtrack keeps you motivated to fight. The level design kind of makes up for the limited number of creatures to fight. This is kind of uneven. Some of the middle levels were harder than the latter. It could have been spaced more evenly. But the experience is gritty. Considering that this was the early 90's, I'm surprised they pulled this off. The quality is astounding for what they had to work with. All the controls are tight. The way the sprite bobs when you walk. The ending was disappointing. It just became a very hard 3D platformer, when they could have just added another character.

Simply fantastic!
3 November 2023
This game has it all. Action, adventure, intrigue. The soundtrack is what you'd expect. It has a soothing, mysterious sound of deep space. The mood and tone are basically this whole game. Where I criticize the game are that later in the game, the play space gets cluttered. As you can imagine, the game is very buggy, even the patched versions, due to its immense complexity. However, it makes up for that with a creative storyline and character development. Another problem is that the playable characters are extremely uneven! Easy difficulty and new players will choose 'peacekeeper' faction, while all others are much harder to achieve the game's goals with.

Unreal (1998 Video Game)

Boring, cliched, tedious.
3 November 2023
The story simply isn't that good. In fact, there's nothing about this that really stands out. The music makes you want to fall asleep. They should have made this a scary, spooky game. They could have used some jump scares to improve it. It came close at that one point. This is way too easy. They give you flares for no reason. At least, I've never felt the need to use most of what this game offers. The hanging creatures are basically worthless enemies. I guess I could say to sum it up, this game lacks intelligence and thoughtfulness. It's extremely repetitive and lacks the puzzle element that made games like Doom great!

Gremlins (1984)

An OK movie with a few bits of tacky dialogue.
30 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is kind of wearing on the senses. First, it starts off with an oriental pawn-shop cliche'. While most of it remains scary to this day. The sappy, tacky townspeople get old pretty quickly. The conclusion is kind of obvious. But the worst two parts about it are the setting and that the stakes are never that high. The girlfriend is never in danger, and the creatures don't appear to be smart enough to be more than a nuisance. Next, the town looks like the "Back to the Future" set, which I found distracting. The stakes of this small, contained town getting destroyed aren't all that intriguing!

A most excellent edition.

Bill and Ted are 10x better than Wayne's World. Much more relatable in my estimation. I'm the kind of person who always sees the sequel first, then goes back to the first one. I still like Bogus Journey much better. But this one has its own positives as well. By far, the chemistry between Winter and Reeves is what turns this out so well. It's also a welcoming site to see George Carlin add some dry wit. Sure, the 3rd one was a huge disappointment. I generally disregard that one. Parts of this move kind of slow, but it is epic in scale after all. Gladly it all pulled together in a way most 80's movies don't.

Should be called Terminator: effing up a good formula.
17 August 2023
This movie is garry beach the whole way through. Simply having A-listers isn't enough. First, the terminator franchise was as much about the human connection and the characters as much as the story. Starting here, and continuing with all subsequent installments, you get these anonymous characters, like Star... dafuq!! Focky zeiss!!!! Then you got the Marcus Wright character, and I'm saying, OK.... Barnes, Williams, etc. Why so many characters? The plot is pretty weak. Worst of all, this kind of borders on being epic in scale. It's just another "people running around doing things" movie. Without Arnold the franchise is foqued!!!

A schlock-fest movie.
13 July 2023
The soundtrack was easily the most annoying part of this. Combine that with shoddy special effects and poor acting and this is terribly entertaining. The Asian woman, Kiana Tom, JCVD's partner in this, was one of the best acting jobs in this. Unfortunately, she gave up on acting after this. JCVD's acting in this was incredibly poor - you can tell he was having trouble with his accent. It felt like it zipped along super-fast and met with the predictable resolution. Nothing profound to explore. There was a part where JCVD looks at a Uni-sol writhing in pain as the scientists work on him, and it hints at making some sort of social statement but misses the opportunity. The director, a first-timer, never worked in Hollywood as director again, and rightfully so. The failure could be laid about 90 percent on his shoulders. Mindless, painful and dull action. If I was making a list of the 50 worst movies ever, this would have to be in it. So many performances in this were one-hit-wonder performances. I feel bad for all the actors and actresses who deserved better. They probably gave up acting after being demoralized by this trash! And I usually like JCVD movies, only when he gets the right roles. Michael Jai White did a good but overdone performance as the baddie.

Great movie with an unsatisfying ending.
30 June 2023
I like this, it's entertaining enough. The problem lies with the ending. It seemed to wrap up in a little too convenient fashion. It could be divided up into four or maybe five separate parts. It us rather uneven, but flows so well, you don't notice. All the actors, and in particular, the NSA Agents, are a little cornball, with their identical haircuts. It gets a little preachy and paranoid at times. I wish Will Smith played more of a physical role in this. All in all, well executed. The script seemed a little contrived. The real NSA doesn't even acknowledge this movie. I guess they dislike being vilified, and rightly so.

Entertaining summer action.
19 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I was pleasantly surprised by this. Anyone who has seen the prior movies will know what formula to expect. As the series is about to wrap up, expect many characters to start to get killed off. This really surprised me on many levels. It isn't just more of the same but keeps things interesting. There were several surprises throughout. It wasn't quite as corny or sappy as prior iterations. My all-time favorite was "The Fate of the Furious." This was about female empowerment, which was the overarching theme of this one. Dom kinda played a supporting role while letting the chicks in his life do the storytelling.

This is like Top Gun 2.0. OK, not great.
6 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I can't rate this any higher. It's just fan service, with a few minor changes from the first one. A few things like ground strikes are present, which were absent from the first one, which was just all dogfighting. But even the return of the F-14 Tomcat feels more like scratching a nostalgic itch, and not much more. There's not much here and even the special effects were of an unrealistic kind. Some of the plot elements ring in as all too familiar. Tom Cruise is still a rogue, who's on the verge of being booted from the Navy, as being stuck at the rank of 'captain' for too long is cause for dismissal in real life.

Striptease (1996)

Utterly worthless trash.
27 February 2023
This movie is so schlocky that it borders on obscene. The inanity of the plot is matched in lockstep by the bland characters. The film starts out in court, where Erin Grant loses custody of her child, played by Rumer Willis, possibly the best character of the movie. She is then forced to be a stripper to get her back...?? Other awful characters include Ving Rhames, the bouncer who tries to scam the system to better his life; a hypocritical conservative politician sleazebag who frequents the club, and the ex-husband who steals for a living. This movie isn't a statement on anything profound and makes you feel like like you need a shower after watching it! I couldn't even finish it. I left it after 20 minutes of it.

Vision Quest (1985)
4/10
Disappointing coming of age story.
16 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This is a canned, corporatist movie. The entire soundtrack is incredibly out of place. The Journey Song should have only been played at the beginning but is inappropriately oversaturated throughout. The relationships in the movie seem to be there only to distract from the real action. And it is also incredibly predictable. It's not completely bad but as a whole, I can't recommend it. Maybe someone with different tastes would see some different parts in it. Every cliche imaginable is in this. One good part is that there isn't the usual 80's training montage. But that is a minor point. I guess someone thought to sex up high school wrestling. Too much of the dialogue is there merely to distract, like when Kuch admits he isn't a real Native-American and he made it up. They throw dialogue like that out there and then just move along. Then there's Daphne Zuniga's character, whom they made appear like a romantic rival to the drifter Linda Fiorentino, only to drop that subplot. So, a film full of potentially interesting subplots and characters, drops them all and heads straight for the conventional. Another thing I noticed was the lack of a clear villain. Even the antagonist, up until the end, could be viewed as a sort of tragic figure. At the beginning they hint at his troubled background but never explore it further. But they pull away from any sort of surprises and go for the conventional. The viewer is left with assumptions as to what happens afterward. I could have enjoyed it more if it was longer.

Logan (2017)
3/10
Underwhelming and lacking in a clear direction.
13 January 2023
This movie was a disappointment. Any attempt to make superhero movies more profound were wasted in this vain ending saga. The movie moves along at a snail's pace, while attempting sentiment that is not to be found. The quality of the actors is wasted. The action is almost not present, as well all know the main actor, Jackman, is getting too old to be doing these things! Like I said, this is carried along by special FX. There's quite a bit of wasted dialogue that goes nowhere - lots of petty bickering. The relationship between Laura and Wolverine is squandered with what was present on screen. Not enough action.

Beautifully refreshing postmodern film
29 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
People criticizing this do not understand true art. They totally misunderstand what it means to be human. As an American, I took this to be a statement on British life and, to a lesser extent, modern European man, as well. This has a series of very poignant vignettes that appeal on a human level to all people, and yet works so well as a Euro story as well! This isn't so much about the main character Nick (BTW I LOVE Julian Sands), but about post modern life of Westerners in general. It does the postmodern "thing" much more effectively than Pulp Fiction ever could have!! This is as close to a Spaghetti Western as you'll get. Among the more memorable scenes are: Nick as a young man, witnessing a girlfriend's dad dying of something like cancer, struggling in agony, ignoring him and taking the Lord's name in vain as he chugs pain medicine. Another scene where he stumbles upon pornography clogging a gas station toilet, preventing him from using it. The scene where two illegitimate twins get separated by a group of nuns. One is Italian and a lesbian; the other is English and single. Another scene where Nick is bothered by the wrong type of attention by a disturbed man on a subway. I believe this is about, at least partially, Nick's awkward walk in life where he struggles for attention and approval from others, and finds none, or else the wrong type of attention. The religious elements are just there to give a McGuffin to the story, to mislead, I think... I believe the artistic statement of this movie us: the folly of man in the face of true religion. How lost man is, how underdeveloped he is in the face of God, and how man's interpretation of religion causes men like Nick to struggle in his pursuit of life in the flesh??... That's my take...

Caligula (1979)

easily the most offensive film I've ever seen
23 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
There's no artistically redeeming value in this at all. The only reason I gave it 2 stars is that it contains some, although embellished, history... there is literally a freak show with sexual acts performed... It is beyond offensive, beyond vomit! It starts off in the first 20 minutes as promising, and then devolves into distractions. This is just chaotic from beginning to end. I bet real Rome was just like this. It gives absolutely no context to the actions of the characters at all. The set design is terrible, in opposition to what other reviewers are saying. Malcolm Mcdowell is not even that good at making the audience hate his character.

Raw Deal (1986)

Takes itself way too seriously.
18 December 2022
That's the main thing to say about this one. The beating music hides a film that subdues the danger factor. I would feel comfortable showing this to a 5-year-old since it is so juvenile. This is almost a parody of a serious gangster movie. Arnold tries as much as you would expect but, keep in mind, he didn't really want to do this one. It seems like they just copied and pasted the scenes in from the script: it doesn't really flow very well. The middle of this is a part most people would feel tempted to fast-forward through. Not very memorable. Ironically, the cast are all A-list. Hard to believe but true.

an uncomfortable experience.
28 October 2022
This movie is a terrible assault on the senses. 90% of it takes place within a very cramped and unappealing house. The characters are pretty unlikeable. The plot is uninspired and boring. Not only that, it's as predictable as Sling Blade, almost from the beginning. You know who's going to die. The lead-up to the conclusion is obvious, with no twists and turns. Frank is the movie's scum and his brother later becomes caught in the sights of the bad guys. Actually, everyone except Julia is bad in this at some point. But the makeup of the four Cenobites really disappoints. They're not scary at all.

oddly directed repeat of a story
12 August 2022
This is odd. Mickey Rourke kind of rambles through the odd narration for reasons unknown. Contained inside the screechingly piercing bad audio, somewhere in there is a rehashing of a compelling story. This was meant for people already familiar with the Bob Lazar story. I can't imagine a film like this being made ten or twenty years ago. I would still prefer the docs of Lazar made back then. It did give some further context to Lazar's story. But Jeremy Corbell is about as dull as a turtle.

Shockingly exploitative vomit screed to nihilism.
20 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This movie will either be really offensive, or really good to you. If you're a person who's bothered by the youth culture and college antics, this will definitely not be for you. Less about the storyline, and more about the shock value. As someone else said, you either love it or hate it. For what is supposed to be love story, it is drowned out by mere silly plot elements. I found it extremely offensive, as well as poorly executed. The disturbing plot elements are bad. Everything from suicide in a bathtub to close encounters with a touchy drug dealer are included. Nothing about this has any greater meaning. But such nihilism is done better and more artfully in other, more delicately executed films. This raw pile of garbage was just terribly insensitive!

Sloppy and messy, one dimensional actioner.
17 June 2022
I had high hopes for this, given its gritty content. However, much like on Battlestar Galactica, the gritty formula does not always work well. The entire story is completely predictable from the beginning, the action is uninspiring, and Karl Urban plays an unlikeable and robotic character. There's nothing about this that's very redeeming. This is just fan service to those who like mindless violence with no humanity.

5 May 2022
I hate this movie. And I'm normally very fair. But the start of this movie was corny as hell. The history teacher just happened to be lecturing about Gengis Khan on the day of the invasion! Not to mention, Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze famously did not get along very well, either in this or in "Dirty Dancing." The villain is about as plain as wallpaper. I seriously wonder if any of these actors did this job for money! They were all dopey and on a bad break or something when they made this. There was absolutely no energy to this at all.

Mildly entertaining premise.
5 May 2022
This is just a bore fest. Comedies that weren't even funny were common in the 80's and early 90's. And this snoozer is no different. It would have been better if they had fully exploited the premise of "stick it to the man" concept. I mean, your rich, dead boss, that's a great premise!! But they failed to deliver on the material. They also didn't have the actors to pull it off! There was literally no chemistry between Andrew McCarthy and Jonathan Silverman. Too much time was spent on the minor characters and not enough on the comedy aspect, which was almost nonexistent.

Simplistic and dull.
3 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The story is flooded with lush and vibrant visuals and characters. However, that isn't enough to save a sinking storyline. It is both overly simplistic yet full of red herrings at the same time. The distracting elements and the pacing of the story are all out of sync. Nonessential characters like the real estate agent are never explained in full. Certain aspects of the plot, like the plague, seem just glossed over. Characters portrayed as nonessential are actually the central characters of the storyline, yet they aren't given much screen time, so it wasn't very well done. I seem to have a print which excludes the shot of the destroyed castle at the end. Very disappointed! This feels like a movie short, and requires a second or even third viewing to catch all the plot elements which just speed by. Even though it is feature length. Once you've seen it, no need to watch it again!!
