A good beginning gone awry
1 May 2004
Being a Sridevi fan, it was my duty to watch this movie in a theatre.

One of her last movies to be released, it came at a time when her popularity had waned to an all-time low. As expected, the film did not generate much excitement among moviegoers and flopped miserably.

But really, it's not a bad film at all. The first half of the movie is indeed thrilling and suspense-filled. It's the second part that sticks to the tried and tested Bollywood formula and lets the movie down.

Somehow Sridevi does not gel well (Am I saying this?) in the role of a psychiatrist who is suspected of committing murder. Rishi Kapoor, in the role of the CBI inspector who poses as her patient and who later arrests her is good but then is too old to be dancing around trees - though I must say the 'Hakka Yela Ye' number is quite hummable.

All things are sorted out in the end - the real murderer is revealed, Sridevi gets off the hook and lives happily ever after with Rishi.

Do watch it once - the first half is eminently watchable.

Hard-hitting movie but still too graphic
28 April 2004
A wonderful and realistic depiction of Christ's last hours. And yet, too brutal. Too much blood and gore. Am not generally squeamish but the scourging scenes were a bit too much to bear.

Brilliant acting by everybody. Monica Bellucci was a bit too sexy to be Magdalene though. Background score brilliant too.

The best scene was the flashback sequence when Mary rushes to help Jesus when he stumbles while carrying the cross. Scene shifts to the past when Mary rushed to her young child's aid after he stumbles and falls. My vote for the most heart-wrenching scene.

Did not find Mel Gibson anti-Semitic at all. In fact, the Roman soldiers are the ones who seem to 'enjoy' Christ's sufferings the most.

Incidentally, James Caviezel accidentally got whipped twice - so he did have to go through an iota of the pain Jesus must have felt. Anyways, do go watch the film - at least once.

One Fine Day (1996)
A great movie

I am speechless. This one is a classic movie, and I have no words to describe it. I wish they would make more movies like this one. Michelle Pfeiffer is brilliant as usual and George Clooney, the right choice as co-star.

Khakee (2004)
A film that had the makings of an epic - alas!
30 January 2004
Khakee is the kind of film that enchants and enthralls. The bone-chilling, and all-the-other-adjectives-that-can-be-used kind of movie that's just replete with thrills. And has the makings of a 'great'. Alas! But, only till the interval.

A racy, taut narrative about the travails of three cops escorting a 'criminal' to a Mumbai court, suddenly degenerates into senseless reel time. Lara Dutta appears out of nowhere to gyrate to an item number and the other songs are simply plastered on without any thought as to whether the movie merits them. The second half actually dissolves into a mockery - with the focus being on meaningless action rather than a plausible storyline.

In fact, everything is quite fine till the moment Iqbal Ansari(Atul Kulkarni) is brought to Mumbai. After that, the vintage Bollywood ghost seems to have taken over Rajkumar Santoshi's hands.

On the upside, everyone acts well. Be it the Big B, Ajay Devgun, Akshay, Aish, Tusshar and even the one-scene character artists - they have all done commendable work.

Well, do watch it though...ONCE. It's at least better than the stuff Bollywood normally churns out. A pity though...if you pause to wonder what could have been.
