World War II epics used to be a dime a dozen. Reliving the United States’ finest hours on the battlefield, filmmakers flocked to the conflict in order to tell tales of heroism. More recently, movies have largely eschewed this topic, unless a director had a more daring take to contribute. Ever since Saving Private Ryan nearly won Best Picture at the Academy Awards, the field of war movies have been shrinking. Now, it’s more the territory of a Dunkirk, where Christopher Nolan could experiment while in a familiar genre. Today brings us Midway, a Roland Emmerich production that is hardly revelatory and offers plenty of action, but little else. This flick is an old fashioned war epic, as mentioned above. For those who don’t know, this is centered on the Battle of Midway, which was the decisive skirmish in the Pacific Theater during World War II. In the...

Midway centers on the Battle of Midway, a clash between the American fleet and the Imperial Japanese Navy which marked a pivotal turning point in the Pacific Theater during WWII. The film, based on the real-life events of this heroic feat, tells the story of the leaders and soldiers who used their instincts, fortitude and bravery to overcome the odds.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has announced the 145 scores eligible in the Best Original Score category, includeing work from “Jackie” and “La La Land.” The latter film, a musical directed by “Whiplash” helmer Damien Chazelle, picked up the Los Angeles Film Critics Association’s award for Best Music earlier this month; “Jackie” was the category’s runner-up. Notably absent, meanwhile, are “Arrival” (which just landed a Golden Globe nod), “Manchester by the Sea” and “Silence.”

David Bowie has never played an actual deity on film, although as Pontius Pilate in The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), he does get to hang out with Jesus for approximately three minutes. This fact seems almost surprising, considering how his musical personas often have the tinge of a messiah, from the alien Ziggy Stardust, the schizophrenic Aladdin Sane to the “Aryan superman,” The Thin White Duke. David Bowie on celluloid is nevertheless godlike, even when the word itself is never spoken out loud. Strangers from strange lands, Thomas Jerome Newton in The Man who Fell to Earth (1976), Jack Celliers in Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983) and Jareth in Labyrinth (1986) all have a divine quality that inspires almost cultish behaviors from those around them.
David Bowie’s characters in the three films are introduced in ways that accentuate their status as the Other.

Roland Emmerich, the director of such films as "Independence Day" and "The Day After Tomorrow," has a habit of destroying American landmarks on-screen. This weekend, he will do it once again, as he turns his sites toward Washington D.C. in "White House Down." The new thriller stars Channing Tatum as a plucky would-be Secret Service agent who looks to save the president (Jamie Foxx) after 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. comes under attack.
This terrorists-take-over-the-White House story may sound a bit familiar -- back in March, a film with a similar plotline called "Olympus Has Fallen" was released in theaters. However, "White House Down" is nothing like that movie (at least, for the most part).
With that in mind, here are 10 more things you should know about "White House Down" before you see it in theaters.
1. It's Fun
Compared to other big-budget blockbusters this summer, there's a lighter feeling to "White House Down.

In Columbia Pictures’ White House Down, Capitol Policeman John Cale (Channing Tatum) has just been denied his dream job with the Secret Service of protecting President James Sawyer (Jamie Foxx). Not wanting to let down his little girl with the news, he takes her on a tour of the White House, when the complex is overtaken by a heavily armed paramilitary group. Now, with the nation’s government falling into chaos and time running out, it’s up to Cale to save the president, his daughter, and the country.
Columbia Pictures’ White House Down is the new action film from director Roland Emmerich, whose films, including Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow, 2012, and Anonymous, have taken in more than $3 billion worldwide.

I was actually beginning to believe Cliff Martinez's score for Drive may actually have a shot with all the love it has received in the precursor awards, but last night the Academy announced the list of 97 scores eligible for Best Original Score at the 2012 Oscars and, oops, what do you know, both Drive and Attack the Block didn't make the cut. The only other score I had on my current list of predictions for the category to not make the cut was Howard Shore's music for David Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method. Why? Well, I would assume somewhere inside there the rules for requirement weren't met. As per the Academy, "To be eligible, the original score must be a substantial body of music that serves as original dramatic underscoring, and must be written specifically for the motion picture by the submitting composer. Scores diluted by the use of...

Yesterday the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences released the 97 original film scores that will running for the final five nominations for the Best Original Score category at the upcoming 84h Academy Awards. Billy Crystal will be hosting the annual awards show, which be presented on February 26, 2012. Some how I am not surprised that Attack the Block got nixed, seeing that Tron: Legacy pretty much got the same treatment last year. Glad to see that Henry Jackman’s X-Men: First Class is getting a nod, and of course Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross had to be in it. Check out the full list below.

The Shakespeare authorship question is a debate that started over one hundred years ago surrounding the identity of the works traditionally attributed to the bearded Bard from Stratford-Upon-Avon, William Shakespeare. Was he really the genius behind Hamlet.s tragic life, Romeo.s burning love, and Lady Macbeth.s plaguing guilt? Could the intellectual behind literature.s most brilliant characters be this very ordinary man from Stratford?
So little is known about the man from Stratford that many find it impossible to believe that the son of an illiterate tradesman was the author of such literary masterpieces as .The Merchant of Venice,. .King Lear,. and .Henry V.. His education from a village school could never have provided Shakespeare with a vocabulary extensive enough to write the most talked about literature in the world and there is no proof that he travelled to foreign lands let alone learnt to speak their native tongues.

Deadline reports that composer/screenwriter/producer Harald Kloser co-wrote the screenplay for Roland Emmerich’s upcoming science fiction movie Singularity, which he is also co-producing. No word yet on if he will be writing the score for the film as well, but given his previous work with the director, it is assumed that he will also be involved in the music for the project. No information about the movie’s plot has been revealed yet. Kloser previously co-wrote the scripts for Emmerich’s 10’000 BC and 2012 and co-scored both movies with composer Thomas Wander. Sony Pictures has set a May 17, 2013 release date for Singularity.
As reported last year, Kloser also co-wrote the music for Emmerich’s upcoming political conspiracy thriller Anonymous with Wander. A soundtrack album for the movie will be released by Madison Gate Records. Check back on this page for details on the soundtrack closer to the release date...

Roland Emmerich is apparently prepping some kind of super secret alien invasion movie in the same vein as Cloverfield, but before that we'll see the release of his film Anonymous on September 23, 2011.
Anonymous uses the argument it was the 17th Earl of Oxford, Edward de Vere (Rhys Ifans), that actually wrote Shakespeare's plays and is described as something of a political thriller set against the backdrop of the succession of Queen Elizabeth I (Vanessa Redgrave), and the Essex Rebellion against her.
The film features Vanessa Redgrave, David Thewlis, Xavier Dolan, Joely Richardson, Jamie Campbell-Bower, Derek Jacobi, Rafe Spall and Rhys Ifans, the latter of which plays de Vere and it's said it was Ifans's performance in Anonymous that brought him to the attention of Columbia suits and earned him the role as the lead villain, The Lizard, in Marc Webb's upcoming Untitled Spider-Man Reboot.
