John Refoua, a prolific film editor best know for his work on James Cameron’s “Avatar,” for which he received an Oscar nomination, died on Sunday following a 14-month battle with cancer. He was 58 years old.
His wife, Serena, made the news public on Monday.
“Dear friends, my brilliant, sweet, creative husband John Djahanshah Refoua passed away last night May 14 surrounded by family and friends who loved him. He was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma, a rare bile duct cancer, 15 months ago,” she wrote on Facebook.
“Despite the pain and complexities of this aggressive disease, he faced it with courage and grit. He continued to work and edit on James Cameron’s ‘Avatar 3’ right up to his final weeks. His life’s trajectory was quite unique and anything he touched, he made better. He loved music, movies, politics, traveling, vintage cars, science fiction, and his 4 year old granddaughter Avery Sophia,” the statement concluded.

Ahead of the 2021 Oscars, the academy combined their Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing categories into one. The films vying for the third annual Best Sound prize are “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “The Batman,” “Elvis,” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” Our current odds indicate that “Top Gun: Maverick” (16/5) will be victorious, followed in order of likelihood by “All Quiet on the Western Front” (19/5), “Avatar: The Way of Water” (9/2), “Elvis” (9/2), and “The Batman” (9/2).
The 23 craftspeople included in the current lineup have collectively amassed a whopping 72 previous nominations and 16 wins for their sound work. The one responsible for the largest chunk is Andy Nelson, whose dual bids for “The Batman” and “Elvis” bring him to a record-fortifying career total of 24. To many people – and that includes many academy members – there might be something esoteric about the Best Sound category at the Oscars. And yet it might be one of the most important technical crafts involved with filmmaking. If you don’t understand what the actors are saying, then it’s harder to connect with them or what the filmmaker was trying to achieve. A movie’s score and sound effects also need to be properly recorded and balanced to make any film as much a sonic experience as a visual one.
There are also useful precursors for the category, such as the Cinema Audio Society Awards and the Motion Picture Sound Editors’ Golden Reel Awards, which give a clearer picture of which of the five Oscar nominees are considered the best by their direct peers.
As with some of the other below-the-line crafts categories, this doesn’t always have a direct correlation with Best Picture,...

When it comes to creating movie sound, it’s all about world-building, says Julian Howarth, sound mixer on Avatar: The Way of Water. “And then it’s to make something believable, emotional and to tell a story,” he adds. “In any film, that’s what we’re here to do.”
For Howarth’s team, that was about telling an immersive story on the fictional moon of Pandora. But the other Oscar nominees for best sound also placed viewers on a World War I battlefield for All Quiet on the Western Front, in Gotham City for The Batman, in the front row for Elvis Presley’s most memorable performances for Elvis and in the cockpits of naval fighter jets for Top Gun: Maverick.
Work on The Way of Water involved creating underwater species such as the whale-like tulkun, whose vocalizations were carefully crafted with a variety of sounds — among them, those made by whales,...

When supervising sound editor Gwendolyn Yates Whittle accepts her career achievement award on Feb. 26 at the 70th Motion Picture Sound Editors’ Golden Reel Awards, she’ll be only the third woman to do so. “I’m hoping to start a trend of more women getting more recognition,” Yates Whittle, who worked on Avatar: The Way of Water (for which she received her third Oscar nomination) and Top Gun: Maverick, tells THR. “There are a lot of fantastic female sound editors out there. We should be a bigger club.”
The honoree is featured in a new episode of The Hollywood Reporter‘s Behind the Screen, during which she talks about her latest and upcoming work.
Based at Skywalker Sound in Northern California for three decades, Yates Whittle has worked on more than 120 films, including Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace, Minority Report, Munich, Iron Man, Cloverfield, Jurassic World and Fight Club.

The motion picture academy made it a little easier in 2021 to predict the winners by combining Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing into one category: Best Sound. Both sound mixers and sound editors are recognized in the combined category. Up to six statuettes will be awarded to one production sound mixer, two supervising sound editors and three re-recording mixers. The inaugural winner of Best Sound was, appropriately enough “Sound of Metal.” Last year, this prize went to “Dune.”
The sound branch determines the nominees in two stages. First, members of the branch cast preferential ballots with the top 10 vote-getters, announced on December 21, moving on to the second stage. Members who attend screenings of excerpts from these 10 semi-finalists or attest that they have seen them cast preferential ballots and the top five films are nominated.
It can be difficult to differentiate the sound mixing of a film from the sound editing.

Avatar: The Way of Water — which this week crossed the 2 billion mark at the worldwide box office and is now the sixth highest-grossing movie in history — earned a best picture Oscar nomination this morning, as well as noms for its production design, sound and visual effects.
But James Cameron, who has now directed three of the six highest-grossing movies ever — his 2009 Avatar sits at the top of that chart — was passed over in the directing competition for his groundbreaking film for the 2023 Oscar nominations. “It’s like if I spent so much time making a gift for someone and then someone beautifully wraps it in a present box,” describes Jack Champion of watching “Avatar: The Way of Water” for the first time. The actor spent a major part of his teenage years steeped in an unconventional filming process, where the second and third films in the “Avatar” saga were shot back-to-back. His extended stay in Pandora granted him the opportunity to work alongside legendary performers and work inside one of the most unique filmmaking processes in history. “Clarity is king” is the most important mantra that Gwendolyn Yates Whittle has learned in her time working with James Cameron. “You have to make sure that you have the sound that supports the picture narratively, and very very precisely,” she explains. After designing major films like “Terminator 2: Judgement Day,” “Titanic,” and “Avatar,” she served as a supervising sound editor on Cameron’s latest trip to Pandora with “Avatar: The Way of Water.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.

Yates Whittle has an affinity for dialogue and Adr work. “I really really like getting out from underneath a computer sometimes,” she confesses, “I love words, and I love dealing with human interaction.” Given that the sound team on a film is often doing much of their work in post production, supervising Adr allows her to peek into the actor’s creative process.

What does a lightsaber sound like? Or a storm on Mars? Or Q’s latest gadget? Well we don’t know. Rather, films’ sound effects editors use their ingenuity to create these artificial sounds, to be integrated into a film’s soundtrack. The Academy Award for Best Sound Editing rewards the supervising sound editors who are responsible for this important craft. War films and action films frequently score here, and science-fiction/fantasy is another favorite. Animated films also do disproportionately well in this category, which is not surprising given that all non-dialogue, non-music sounds need to be created. Best Picture nominees by no means dominate this category, but films that tank usually have considerable difficulty making the final five. “The Martian” featured extraordinary sounds during crashes and explosions such that viewers feel they are on Mars/in space. Oliver Tarney was nominated two years ago for another October release –“Captain Phillips.

Odds are if you visited a movie theater recently, you might have been there to see Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol or War Horse. The former has been deservedly sitting atop the box office charts since its release and the latter is the latest, tear-jerker live-action drama from one of our most beloved filmmakers, Steven Spielberg. And while the fact they're both currently playing in theaters is more or less the only thing the films have in common, both are undoubtedly improved by their sound and score. John Williams' score to War Horse is one of his best in many years. It perfectly compliments the sweeping story of how a single animal can bring out the best in people at the worst of times. With Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, director Brad Bird and his team use not only Michael Giacchino's score, but a steady barrage of sound,...

Tremors? Nightbreed? Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat? 976-evil? Are all on the list this year. And though there were not huge horror wins in sound editing through screenplays, the Technical Awards never cease to bring out the horror veterans. Notably Tim Drnec who contributed to such VHS classics as Alien Seed, Destroyer, and Prison won for his work on “Spydercam 3D volumetric suspended cable camera technologies.” An award also shared with Ben Britten Smith and Matt Davis who both also worked on Constantine.
But among all the winners, the Academy also honored some great loses in 2010. And though they mentioned some of our heroes, Dennis Hooper (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), Kevin McCarthy (Invasion of the Body Snatchers) and Dino de Laurentiis (King Kong), they did not mention Zelda Rubinstein or Corey Haim. But we will in this last section and the others lost to us last year.

Did the Oscars surprise anyone? Sci-Fi fans, we are of course still sore over Christopher Nolan’s snub for Best Director, but Inception still was recognized with four Oscars. Genre highlights from the 83rd Academy Awards also include Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland sweeping away the two coveted design awards in Art Direction and Costume Design and The Wolfman won for Best Makeup. Pixar‘s Toy Story 3 took home Best Animated Film and Best Song.
This Sunday’s broadcast of the 83rd Academy Awards on ABC attempted to reach out to a “younger crowd” with its choice of hosts, Anne Hathaway and James Franco, but the live broadcast dropped 9% in overall ratings compared to last year’s broadcast and down 12% in the 18-49 adult demographic. Still, the show entertained 37.6 million viewers with a show full of exposition to educate new viewers about the history of past Oscar winners.

… And so another year of the most boring and predictable awards ceremony on planet Earth has passed. There were cheesy speeches, somebody said the ‘f’ word and Colin Firth won an Oscar. If you missed the broadcast of the 83rd Academy Awards, or you can't remember who won what, here is a list of all the winners in their categories. The King's Speech and Inception both tied for the most Oscars won, which was four statues each. However, whereas Inception took home awards for technical categories (Best Visual Effects, Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound and Best Cinematography), The King's Speech won three of the top four categories (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay).

In a surge reminiscent of its late-breaking Oscar season momentum, The King’s Speech triumphed at the 2011 Academy Awards, winning three of the final four categories including Best Picture, Best Actor (Colin Firth), and Best Director (Tom Hooper). The magnificent British drama took home four golden statues on Sunday, tieing Christopher Nolan’s Inception for the most Oscars, and narrowly beating critic favorite and three-time winner The Social Network.
Hosted by a smug, sleepy James Franco and a cheery, happy-to-be-there Anne Hathaway, the 3+ hour ceremony felt like an eternity. Well I certainly don't think 2011 will go down as one of the more memorable years in Oscar history; not only were the winners fairly predictable, but the ceremony itself seemed dull and uninspired. Despite an attempt to add a "youthful edge" to the Oscars this year, it was almost completely lacking in comedy, excitement or entertainment. Hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway seemed to be dreadfully unprepared and lacking material, leaving Franco to put up a facade of aloof detachment while Hathaway simply attempted to win everyone over with cuteness. The King's Speech went on to secure most of the major awards including Best Picture, Director, Actor and Original Screenplay, reinforcing the stuffy British Oscar stereotype. For the second time David Fincher was denied Best Director, but The Social Network did end up getting awards for Film Editing, Original Score and Adapted Screenplay. Natalie Portman still managed to snag Best Actress for Black Swan,...

Hollywood's biggest night of the year has come and gone, and it seems many could care less. Last night's 83rd Annual Academy Awards show wasn't as dreadful as many critics have charged, but it wasn't lustrous, either — not the way it has been in decades past — leading many to wonder if the ceremony is: a) losing its relevance; b) compromised by the down economy; c) an indicator of the changing state of both the film and broadcast industry.
The turn of the 21st century has seen the celebrated awards show take a hit. Changes over the past decade seem to have aversely affected the program, including shifting the broadcast from Monday at 9pm to Sunday at 8:30pm in 1999. During the TV writers strike in 2008, just over 32M viewers watched the Oscars, the least viewed ever.
This year the Academy Awards show fell to an 11.7 adults 18-49 rating, down 12% vs.

It’s Oscar time as the 83rd Academy Awards are about to start in Los Angeles and though the whispers on the wind blowing through Hollywood are telling us that these are the most easily predicted Oscars in years I’m still holding out for one or two surprises.
Our man Ian Gilchrist offered his views on the big awards and whatever happens in the event the world and his dog will be liveblogging and twitter is almost certain to groan worryingly under the weight of the #oscar discussion, we’ll be doing our bit and updating this page with the winners as they are announced, but why not join in the fun and head on out to Twittersville and follow along with @heyuguysblog. Football has the Super Bowl, baseball has the World Series, soccer has the World Cup and movies have the Academy Awards. Each year, Hollywood's schedule more or less culminates with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences handing out Oscars for the year's best films and Sunday, for the 83rd straight time, it happened again. Hosts James Franco [1] and Anne Hathaway [2] helped some of the most famous actors and actresses [3] in the world hand out the hardware for the best of 2010. Leading the pack with twelve total nominations [4] was The King's Speech, followed by True Grit with ten, Inception and The Social Network with eight, The Fighter with seven, 127 Hours with six, Black Swan and Toy Story 3 with five and The Kids Are all Right and Winter's Bone with four. And those just so happen to be the 10 films nominated for Best Picture. Did your favorite film take home an Oscar?...

It's hard to predict the winners of this year's Oscars because there is no clear-cut favorite. Last year, Kathryn Bigelow's "The Hurt Locker" started strong during awards season and maintained its dominance all the way to its Oscar best picture victory. This year, David Fincher's "The Social Network" triumphed in the beginning but the Oscar buzz surrounding the movie is slowly fading away.
But I still have my favorites and I will attempt to handicap the Oscars. Here are my predictions of who should take home Oscar gold at the 83rd Annual Academy Awards.
Best Picture
.Black Swan. Mike Medavoy, Brian Oliver and Scott Franklin, Producers
.The Fighter. David Hoberman, Todd Lieberman and Mark Wahlberg, Producers
.Inception. Emma Thomas and Christopher Nolan, Producers
.The Kids Are All Right. Gary Gilbert, Jeffrey Levy-Hinte and Celine Rattray, Producers
.The King's Speech. Iain Canning, Emile Sherman and Gareth Unwin, Producers
.127 Hours. Christian Colson,...
