The Pirates Of The Caribbean movies have not been easy films to make....
As Michael Bolton once belted out: “This is the tale of Captain Jack Sparrow.” The Pirates Of The Caribbean film was a surprise sleeper hit in 2003, astounding the higher-ups at Disney who had long been sceptical of how a pirate movie, based on a ride at Disneyland, would appeal to audiences.
Off the back of this success, the sequels only got more ambitious and expensive in scale, with their use of practical effects and convoluted character dynamics serving to complicate the adventure format, with mixed results. It shouldn't shock you then, to hear that each of the movies released so far had some serious behind-the-scenes battles to make them shipshape.
The fifth and apparently final instalment, Salazar's Revenge (or Dead Men Tell No Tales), has had some very public battles before it has even been released,...

Robin Williams' children and his widow have 11 days to settle their war over his personal items ... before a judge weighs in on the dispute. During a hearing in San Francisco today ... the judge urged both parties to meet outside court -- possibly with a mediator -- to figure out who gets what. In December, Susan Williams filed docs ... claiming a bunch of Robin's possessions -- including the tuxedo he wore at their wedding --...

Sometimes you’re watching a movie, and something unexpected happens. Like when Brad Pitt got hit by the van (and then the taxi) in Meet Joe Black. Or when Superman snapped Zod’s neck in Man of Steel. Those were genuinely surprising moments that served the story in important ways. Other times, the unexpected is jarring and takes you out of the movie. Like when your favorite — or least favorite — band shows up somewhere you weren’t expecting, like a Billy Crystal/Robin Williams buddy comedy. That is just distracting. Especially if they're playing an entirely different genre of music than they are known for.
Bands have been appearing in movies since basically forever, and sometimes they fit hand-in-glove. Other times, they leave you scratching your head. GeekTyrant has partnered with Green Label to give you a list of the...

The best movie culture writing from around the internet-o-sphere. There will be a quiz later. Just leave a tab open for us, will ya? “Norm MacDonald Shared a Wonderful Robin Williams Story on Twitter” — Among the mountain of amazing remembrances, this is one of the very best. “Why the Funniest People are Sometimes the Saddest” — Comedian Jim Norton sits down at the Comedy Table with one of the few big acts other comedians wouldn’t feign disinterest in. “Knight Takes King” — Alex Pappademas at Grantland rues the limitations of classic rock in memorializing a beloved entertainer while recognizing some of Williams’ great performances. “Star Trek Writer’s Defense of Diversity in Sci-Fi is Damn Near Perfect” — Katharine Trendacosta at io9 points to a reader refusing to buy anything else written by David Mack after seeing a lesbian relationship in one his Trek books, followed by Mack’s calmly blistering response. “Scarecrow...

From a range of eras and genres, here's Jenny and Alex's light-hearted pick of 50 great opening title sequences from the movies...
Odd List
We don’t go to the cinema much, because we hate people. We also don’t go because there’s always the risk of accidentally going to see the wrong film. It's not helped by the fact that there's no way of telling until it’s too late, because there are no bloody opening credits on lots of modern films. And by the time you do realise, you’ve eaten all your popcorn and you can’t be bothered to move.
The movies on this list won’t give you that problem. These opening credits are perfect scene setters for the movies that follow, so you won’t have to worry about awkward popcorn wasting moments. It's not a top 50, rather a selection of 50 interesting credits sequences,...

On Sunday (September 22) the 65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards will take over Los Angeles’ Nokia Theatre, and a who’s who of top-name celebrities will compete for media attention by getting all gussied up in designer duds. In fact, over the past six decades Tinseltown favorites have set the fashion pace with their red carpet choices, and it all got started way back in January 1949.
Hosted by NBC radio legend Walter O’Keefe, the 1st Annual Emmy Awards (the ‘Primetime’ didn’t get added until the Daytime Emmys debuted in 1974) was minuscule compared to today’s fanfare. The Hollywood Athletic Club played host to stars like Shirley Dinsdale, Rita LeRoy, Patricia Morrison, Mike Stokey, and Bill Welsh.
And given the shortage of European-designed clothing due to the recent ending of World War II, American designers Gilbert Adrian, Claire McCardell, Bonnie Cashin, and Tom Brigance had all taken a step forward...

Into the Woods movie: Chris Pine and Jake Gyllenhaal singing? (photo: Chris Pine Star Trek Into Darkness) Chris Pine (Star Trek Into Darkness) and Jake Gyllenhaal (Brokeback Mountain) — maybe, possibly, who knows — to be featured in a musical directed by Rob Marshall. Sounds weird? Well, why? If Russell Crowe can be cast as a mumbling — ahem, singing — Javert in Tom Hooper’s Les Misérables, why can’t Captain Kirk and the Prince of Persia demonstrate their singing talents (or lack thereof) in Marshall’s movie adaptation of the 1987 Broadway hit Into the Woods? Johnny Depp and Meryl Streep have already been cast in Into the Woods, to be released by the Walt Disney Studios sometime this decade. And only yesterday it was announced that Tony winner James Corden (Two Guvnors) would join the Into the Woods ensemble as well. According to The Hollywood Reporter, no contract negotiations have taken place as yet,...

Adele is halfway to an Egot (winning an Emmy, Oscar, Grammy and a Tony) and she's got plans to complete the title.
The "Rolling In The Deep" singer took home an Oscar for "Skyfall" at the 2013 ceremony and already has multiple Grammys to her name. What will she do for the Emmy and Tony?
"Maybe I'll do an HBO special like Beyonce did," she said backstage at the Dolby Theater on Sunday, Feb. 24. "And a Tony, I'm not so sure. Maybe someday I'll do a musical."
The current list of Egot honorees is a short one. Actors John Gielgud, Helen Hayes, Audrey Hepburn, Rita Moreno and Whoopi Goldberg have received all four awards, as have composers Marvin Hamlisch, Richard Rodgers and Jonathan Tunick. Mel Brooks, director Mike Nichols and producer Scott Rudin have also gotten all four. James Earl Jones, Liza Minnelli and Barbra Streisand are considered Egot winners, but...

The Oscar-winning actor and star of Quentin Tarantino's ultra-controversial new film about slavery talks about the n-word, Spike Lee and meeting George W Bush
In the mid-1980s a teenage musician named Eric Bishop went to play piano for the rich white folk outside his hometown of Terrell, Texas. Bishop was driven to the house by a schoolfriend, who was then ordered to wait outside in the car until the recital was over. "I can't have two niggers in my house at the same time," the owner explained.
If living well is the best revenge, then Eric Bishop provides a study in payback. Recast in the role of Hollywood star Jamie Foxx, he has a Grammy for his music and an Oscar for his acting. By rights his latest movie should count as the icing on the cake, in that it's about a freed slave on a mission of reprisal.

1.) Ang Lee was just nominated for an Oscar this morning for his latest film, Life of Pi, and now reports say he's keen on directing Angelina Jolie in Cleopatra after David Fincher was the latest director to come and go, following in the footsteps of James Cameron and Paul Greengrass. "I'm about to read the script," Lee told The Hollywood Reporter. "It just feels right to me after all the other types of films I've done. What does it have in common with any of them? They're all totally different! That's what makes this perfect." The film has been gestating since 2010, so hopefully Lee strikes a deal and finally gets this thing made. 2.) Robin Williams will star in Boulevard, the next project from A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints helmer Dito Montiel. Williams will play a devoted husband in a marriage of convenience who meets a young man (newcomer Roberto...

It's over. After seven years of witnessing the story of Bruce Wayne as told through the eyes of director Christopher Nolan, The Dark Knight trilogy is over. Christian Bale is done playing Batman, and the story of Nolan's Gotham City has reached its ultimate conclusion. Right now is a time of mourning, a time to reflect upon the wonderful trilogy's impact on the cinematic world.Okay, enough of that; let's reboot the son of a bitch. Warner Bros. wants some more money, and Batman=Money. So rather than wait a couple of years or so to retell the story of Batman, it's all but assured that WB is planning to reboot the series immediately (and is probably already in the planning stages as we speak). Of course, we have no idea what WB is aiming for. We don't know what characters will be featured, or even what tone the reboot will be going for.

In a recent article here at What Culture, Andrew Edward Davies explored Tim Burton’s Batman Forever and called it The Best Dark Knight Movie Never Made. The threequel would have seen such things as the return of Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman, a darker and more maniacal Riddler played by Robin Williams and the introduction of Two Face played by Billy Dee Williams, continuing his role from 1989’s Batman. So what happened?
Well, Andrew explores that in his article which I suggest you check out, here. My topical colleague, however, has opened the proverbial can of worms and sent me on a merry chase through Development Hell to bring you five films Hollywood could have gotten right if only they’d paid closer attention…

Warning: The following contains major spoilers from this Friday’s episode of Fox’s Fringe. Proceed accordingly.
If Fox had not renewed Fringe last week, the Internet would be on fire right now, torched to the ground, given the jaw-dropping events of Season 4′s penultimate hour.
For starters, very early into the episode it was revealed that the devious, deviant David Robert Jones in fact does answer to someone. And that someone is no less than… William Bell, played by a not-very-retired Leonard Nimoy.

Benedict Cumberbatch
Of all the plot points to ponder about the upcoming "Star Trek" sequel, the element on many people's minds pertains to new addition Benedict Cumberbatch and which villain he's playing.
That subject is a closely guarded secret, of course, so in an effort to approach the "Trek 2" topic with the busy and talented British actor when he stopped by our MTV Newsroom recently, we gave him a little "Star Trek" quiz to see how much insider info he's picked up during shooting so far. As it turns out, he's got some homework to do — that, or he's really good at messing with us.

Every decade or so, one or two film makers become a major force in cinema comedies. The 1980′s saw the influence of Zaz (Aka Jerry Zucker, Jim Abrahams, and David Zucker) starting with Airplane! and Ruthless People . For the last ten years or so Judd Apatow (40-year Old Virgin) and Todd Phillips (Old School) have ruled the comedy roost. In between there’s the Farrelly brothers (Peter and Bobby), former sitcom writers who invaded the multiplexes with the big box office laugh fests Dumb And Dumber and There’S Something About Mary (which opened the gates for the return of the R-rated movie comedy). When interviewed during their salad days, the guys related their affection for a decades old comedy team and vowed to bring them back to the big screen (they even appeared on a tribute NBC-tv special hosted by their Kingpin star Woody Harrelson). Though disarming in appearance, actor Kurtwood Smith.s two best-known big-screen roles are memorable villains. He was the psychotic Clarence in Robocop in 1988 and played a very different scoundrel the next year in Dead Poet Society where he was the unforgettable Mr. Perry, the overbearing bully father of aspiring actor Neil (played by Robert Sean Leonard) who meets a tragic end. He played a comedy variation on that role as the conservative, tough-loving dad on the TV sitcom That .70.s Show from 1998 to 2006. Smith’s other credits include Flashpoint, Rambo III, To Die For, Deep Impact, and roles on both Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. He can currently be seen on the TV series Chaos. The Disney classic Dead Poet Society has been digitally restored and presented for the first time in Blu-ray High Definition this week,...

But you don't care about my discomfort! You want to hear me spill the beans on this summer's press tour which has been very interesting. So let's get to it!

He's talented, charismatic and good-looking – so why isn't Eric Bana the biggest star on the planet? Joe Queenan thinks he knows what's eating him
Do you ever wonder why movies stars sometimes vanish from the screen for years at a stretch? Not the way Mel Gibson did (no films between 2004 and 2010, largely because personal issues induced him to keep a low profile), but the way major stars will retreat from the limelight for awhile. Hey, what ever happened to Jon Voight? Gosh, what's Neve Campbell been doing the last few years? Wait a sec, is Jean-Claude Van Damme still alive?
The following, then, may be of interest to you. In 2009's rollicking blockbuster Star Trek, the Romulan commander of the aerodynamically implausible, hydra-like spaceship that is threatening to destroy Earth with the deadly weapons mounted in its weird tentacles somehow manages to muff the assignment. Before today, it had been more than a year since we had an update about The Lone Ranger. That would be strange even if this were just some run-of-the-mill potential blockbuster, but for a Disney-Jerry Bruckheimer movie that has had a signed contract for Johnny Depp since 2008, this lack of news is hard to figure.
I think we need to look internally. Disney has had an eventful year, unloading its president Dick Cook (a Depp favorite, incidentally) and replacing him with Rich Ross, who seems to be much more oriented around the bottom line. That has its good and bad points, but at least he stopped McG's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea reboot and a Wild Hogs sequel, plus a silly Robin Williams mid-life comedy.
The Lone Ranger adaptation is also a Mike Newell project, and he has no dobut had his hands full with Bruckheimer's Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time,...

Martin Lawrence has had his ups and downs this decade in terms of box office success, but like most actors he can always do well with his franchises. And fortunately for him, both of his franchises have new sequels on the way.
Earlier this week, Columbia Pictures announced that a script is being written for "Bad Boys 3," though neither Lawrence nor Will Smith is yet signed on for another installment. Now Variety reports that Fox is developing a third movie in the "Big Momma's House" series. Again, there's no word on Lawrence's involvement, but given that his last two movies were only modest successes, it's likely that he'll return.
I'll be the first to admit that one of those movies from 2008, the hilarious ensemble comedy "Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins," is the kind of high concept movie I prefer from Lawrence. And I'm not a big fan of anything requiring a...

According to ERCBoxoffice.com, Warner Bros. has signed Kevin Smith to direct Couple of Dicks, a comedy starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan. The site has the release date set for January 29, 2010. Written by TV scribes Robb and Marc Cullen (Las Vegas), the comedy follows two veteran Lapd detectives who attempt to track down a stolen, mint-condition, 1952 baseball card. When the film was initially announced, the Cullens were attached to direct with Robin Williams and James Gandolfini in the lead roles. The flick subsequently fell apart, with Williams filing a lawsuit against Frank and Beans Productions and Gold Circle Films - $6 million was allegedly owed to the actor on a pay-or-play deal. The project would be the first feature Smith directed, but didn’t write. It would also mark a new studio for the filmmaker. His previous flicks have been set up at Miramax and The Weinstein Company. Smith shared...

Just got back from “Disney Day” at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood where we got a preview of the upcoming films for the next thousand years or so. It was quite the production, actually. Miley Cyrus sang and read off a teleprompter, Robin Williams made fun of the teleprompter, Tim Allen told William H. Macy that he had a large package and we saw the footage from the new Tron film...Tr2n!!! (I’m clapping my hands and squealing like a 12 year old girl right now...so glad you can’t see that) Read on for the wrap-up...
