“Coco” was first announced in 2012, but little concrete information about the upcoming Pixar project has come to light in the four years since. That changed today with news of who will be voicing the Day of the Dead–themed film: Benjamin Bratt, Gael García Bernal and newcomer Anthony Gonzalez. Entertainment Weekly first shared the news.

Gonzalez will play the film’s protagonist, a 12-year-old boy named Miguel who aspires to be a musician — an unlikely career path for a kid from a family of shoemakers in a small Mexican village. His fixation on a late, great singer named Ernesto de la Cruz (Bratt) eventually leads him to the underworld, as tends to be the case in these situations; Bernal, meanwhile, will play a helpful spirit Miguel meets during his chthonic adventure.

Disney has released the first teaser poster for Pixar's upcoming animated film Coco, and they've also revealed the voice cast along with synopsis detailing the story. Coco is the only film that Pixar is releasing in the next few years that isn't a sequel to an already existing property. The other films currently in development are Cars 3, The Incredibles 2, and Toy Story 4.
Up until this point, the only thing we've known about Coco is that it is being directed by Lee Unkrich (Toy Story 3), and that the story would revolve around the Mexican holiday of Día de los Muertos. Now we have a more detailed synopsis that you can read below:
“Despite his family’s baffling generations-old ban on music, Miguel (voice of newcomer Anthony Gonzalez) dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz (voice of Benjamin Bratt). Desperate to prove his talent,...

Four years ago, Pixar teased plans to craft a brand new animation about Dia de los Muertos, the Mexican holiday in which friends and family gather in unison to remember lost loved ones. Lee Unkrich and Darla K. Anderson of Toy Story 3 fame were elected at the helm, before the project quickly went dark.
Bringing an end to that radio silence today is Entertainment Weekly, after premiering the poignant synopsis for Pixar’s latest original movie. It’s now known as Coco, and will star Renée Victor, Benjamin Bratt, Gael Garcia Bernal and the up-and-coming Anthony Gonzalez as Miguel, a young Mexican who longs to become a famous musician. Said to be one of Pixar’s most musical projects to date – without strictly being classed as a full-blown musical – Unkrich stressed the importance of assembling an all-Latino cast while chatting to EW, before revealing that...

After carving out indelible classics in the field of animation, one can’t entirely fault Pixar for attempting to wrangle the same audience now that they’ve relied more on sequels than ever as of late. From this year’s Finding Dory leading up to Toy Story 4 in 2019, we’ll only be getting one original film from the studio and today we have many more details on the project, titled Coco.
Announced back in 2012, we knew the Mexico-set animation would be directed by Lee Unkrich (Toy Story 3) and was set during the Day of the Dead, but beyond that, details were kept at a minimum. Thanks to a new EW feature, more information has arrived, notably that Benjamin Bratt and Gael García Bernal will be taking lead voice roles along with newcomer Anthony Gonzalez as the 12-year-old character of Miguel while Renée Victor plays his grandmother Abuelita.

Paradox has announced the sci-fi "grand strategy" game, Stellaris. Here's the first trailer and details...
If "never judge a videogame by its trailer" isn't an aphorism already, it should be. But we can't help getting a little bit excited about the prospect of Stellaris, a new strategy game from Paradox - the studio behind such beard-stroking tactical games as Europa Universalis and Crusader Kings.
Announced at Gamescom, Sellaris is described as "grand strategy on a universal stage." The reveal trailer below points to its mind-expanding scope, its hazy space visuals recalling the eerie vistas of Prometheus and the electronic music sounding a bit like M83's score for the 2013 film, Oblivion.
There's more to Stellaris than just style, though. The game will take place among huge, procedurally-generated star systems, where you'll encounter "an incredible number of random species" - all of whom can become your allies or your opponents, depending...

My wife likes the group Haim, particularly that song "The Wire" and I like what M83 did with the score for Oblivion, so just maybe the collaboration of the two on the song "Holes in the Sky" for the The Divergent Series: Insurgent soundtrack will bring us together in some unexpected way. I don't know. The studio today released the full tracklisting for the upcoming release, which will be available digitally on March 17 with the film hitting theaters three days later on March 20. I'm actually seeing it the Monday of that week (the 16th) so we'll see if this one can improve on the absolutely awful first film. Check out the tracklisting below and listen to "Holes in the Sky". These days no movie can get away without a tie-in soundtrack. The latest is Fifty Shades of Grey, which brings together everyone from Beyoncé, Sia and Ellie Goulding.
However, there's always a danger that the album can outshine the movie it originates from. Digital Spy highlights 9 instances where this is the case.
1. Tron: Legacy (2010)
Disney's belated sequel to its cult '80s hit Tron unfortunately forgot to bother with anything approaching a coherent story or believable characters - but what a display of visuals and sound. Daft Punk took care of the latter, crafting a score that fizzed with electronic pulses ripped straight from The Grid.
2. The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009)
Despite being so critically derided, the Twilight movies were consistently able to churn out impressive soundtracks. The best of them was 2009's New Moon, which collected new songs from Thom Yorke, Death Cab for Cutie, Lykke Li, The Killers,...

From Guardians Of The Galaxy to Godzilla, and Noah to Paddington, our pick of 2014's finest film soundtracks and scores.
After Gravity blew your eardrums out of the airlock in 2013 with its seamless mix of sound effects and music, it was hard to imagine a film wowing just as much the year after, but 2014 was a year in which movie soundtracks became, if anything, even more intricate, from films about the nature of being a musician to those that replicated the noise of human existence for alien senses.
Before 2014 becomes a distant ringing in the ears, here are the top 14 movie soundtracks of the year.
1. Under the Skin (Mica Levi)
Once you've heard Mica Levi's soundtrack to Under the Skin, everything else sounds both disappointing and even more exciting. I say 'soundtrack' because, like the best movies, Jonathan Glazer's sci-fi understands that sound and music are two halves of the same hastily-conceived metaphor.

It’s been a great year for film music. I say that as someone who had to endure the laughably dated qualities of Alberto Iglesias’ Exodus: Gods and Kings and had to swallow the pill that is Howard Shore‘s latter days Middle-earth music.
But it has been a great year. Clint Mansell gave us haunting, complex soundscapes in Noah, the Alexandre Desplat Hive Mind unleashed another five feature-length scores on the planet, and we even got a peak at John Williams‘ forthcoming music in that Star Wars trailer.
So what was the best of the bunch? For simplicity’s sake, I’ve limited this list to movies with U.S. theatrical runs in 2014. When possible, I’ve also linked to our reviews and select cues on Spotify, although you’ll note the occasional YouTube or SoundCloud embed as well. Let’s do this:

Catching up with Joseph Trapanese is like getting a summary experience for a hustling composer. In the past year, he's scored, worked in sound design and arranged for a diverse array of films, including franchises like "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay" and the "Divergent" series; remakes like "Annie"; a sequel like "The Raid 2"; and original scripts like "Nightcrawler." He's dipped into TV like for "Wonder Woman," and nabbed further video game gigs like he did for racing title "The Crew." On top of all that, he's still active in the pop music sphere, having just completed work with repeat customer Kelly Clarkson and collaborating with acts like M83 for live performances. I sat down with Trapanese back in January, after "Raid 2" punched Sundance in the face, and even after only 10 months, it was time we caught up. This week, during our chat, Trapanese exclusively revealed that he's on tap as...

"All these years you've lived, but you've never had a life." After delivering some solid indies like Celeste and Jesse Forever and The Vicious Kind, director Lee Toland Krieger is getting a little whimsical with The Age of Adaline, and the first trailer for the film has just arrived. Blake Lively plays the title character, a woman who mysteriously becomes immortal after an accident. It sounds like a gift, but it also means that she can't grow old with those she loves, as you can see with Ellen Burstyn playing her daughter in the present day. There's an interesting use of an M83 track from the Oblivion soundtrack, and this feels like the kind of movie Disney would release through Touchstone Pictures, but rarely makes anymore. Watch below! Here's the first trailer for Lee Toland Krieger's The Age of Adaline from Tribute: Following a near-fatal accident one icy night,...

Far be it from me to make any grand sweeping statements on the year in film this early, but as of July 2014, I would argue it’s already been a fascinating year for scores. Just look at blockbusters. We’ve heard both the invigoratingly new and the depressingly dull. Ambitious combinations have even produced a commendable failure here and there. Hollywood studios almost always take the safe road in their big-budget franchises, but the music attached to those tentpoles feels less restrained and not nearly as beholden to manageable cliches.
Thus far we’ve had a tremendous grab bag in film music (and I say this as someone who hasn’t yet seen Under the Skin), but what’s been the best to come out of it? Without further ado…

With Gareth Evans’ utterly spectacular sequel The Raid 2 gearing up for an expanded theatrical release this weekend, we thought this would be a perfect opportunity to catch up with the film’s composer Joseph Trapanese, whose sonic contributions to the film were just as integral as anything that was happening visually on the screen throughout Evans’ epic actioner.
And while Trapanese may not be a name that necessarily jumps out at you, the highly talented composer has racked up quite the resume in just eight short years, working on films like Tron: Legacy, Oblivion, Fast Five, The Bourne Legacy as well as The Raid: Redemption, where he collaborated with Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda. During our interview, Trapanese discussed his approach to the score for The Raid 2, his approach to creating timeless but modern film music, his thoughts on working on studio albums versus creating music for film and more.

Well, they are at it again with ten new pilots, none of which have committed to series yet but with which the lucky few will go to one of those full season exclusive type deals that Netflix do so well.
I don’t know about you but I kind of wish they would just commit to something right out the gate and take the risks, its paid off for Netflix so far and Amazon are attracting some major talent to their stable too.

The 2013 RopeofSilicon Movie Awards I was hesitant to actually do a sixth year of the RopeofSilicon Awards for a variety of reasons, but most of all due to the deluge of awards handed out for movies at this point in our culture. As it turns out, I'm glad I waited and I'm glad I decided to go forward with the Awards. As we've moved into 2014 it became clear there were not only films and performances from 2013 that were still resonating with audiences, but there were some that hadn't gotten the attention I felt they deserved. Therefore, these awards afforded me the opportunity to highlight some of those films and performances. Looking back, 2013 was something of a strange year for movies. It was a year dominated by big budget features, but while many of those blockbusters made lots of money, they fell quite flat in terms of overall audience reception. Films...

Park City, Utah - Joseph Trapanese barely had time to sigh relief once he was done with the score to "The Raid 2," one of the toasts of the Sundance Film Festival this year. The composer -- along with the filmmakers including director Gareth Evans -- was still editing the action flick only 48 hours before its premiere at the Park City fest. And compared to the first film, this sequel was even more of a marathon, considering it was an hour longer than the original "The Raid." And, actually, "the first cut was 3.5 hours long," Trapanese admitted during our chat at Sundance last week. It seems like Joe Trapanese hasn't had many breathers at all in the last five years, as he's composed, conducted and arranged for big budget, edit-sensitive projects including "Oblivion" with M83, "Tron: Legacy" with recent Grammy winners Daft Punk and "The Raid's" American cut from 2012 with...

Odd List Ivan Radford 7 Jan 2014 - 06:37
Last year may only be a memory, but its film themes linger in the mind. Here's Ivan's pick of 2013's best soundtracks...
Just a quick scan down the list below reveals an extraordinary breadth of genres and subject matters, from imposing, expensive science fiction films to quiet, intimate stories about men at sea on boats or outlaws breaking out of prison to be with their wives. Disparate though the films are, they're all linked by at least one common motif: their music is utterly brilliant.

It was a bumper year for science fiction movies, and spectacle films are getting better, so we end the year with a nod to the best geek flicks of 2013
• More from the Week in geek series
• The best films of 2013
• The films to watch in 2014
The superhero film gets stronger, while art house film-makers decry the lack of big-screen directing opportunities. It is a sad state of affairs when new movies from directors of the calibre of Steven Soderbergh and David Lynch may never again be seen in multiplexes, especially when those film-makers have made more than their fair share of notable contributions to the genres this column celebrates.
If there is a silver lining, it is that studios are getting better at making these preposterously expensive, spectacle-heavy movies. And they have become considerably more canny when it comes to recruiting film-makers to oversee them. The McGs and Brett Ratners...

It has been another extraordinary year for motion pictures. We recently posted our staff list of the 30 best films released in 2013, and with 40 writers who participated, 160 films received at least one vote. Every year we also post an article listing the best movie scores, only this this time I decided to do something a little different. Instead of writing a lengthy, time-consuming article (which to be honest, wouldn’t give the music justice since you can’t hear any of the tracks), I instead decided to make a mix tape for our listeners. Included are 20 tracks from my 16 favourite original movie scores released this year.
Film scores were once exclusive to classically trained musicians, but over time, more and more filmmakers have hired rock, soul, electronic and hip-hop artists to create the original sound of their movies. This year alone, we’ve seen scores composed by M83’s Anthony Gonzalez...

With 2013 now almost at a close, it's as good a time as any to look back at some of the musical film highlights of the last 10 years.
From the MTV-inspired pop of Spring Breakers and The Great Gatsby to the pulsing scores from Gravity and Captain Phillips it's been an impressive year for music at the movies.
Other stand-outs include M83 and Joseph Trapanese's impressive work on Oblivion, evocative work from Alex Ebert on All Is Lost and a revival of 'Live and Let Die' thanks to Jennifer Lawrence's rendition in American Hustle.
Digital Spy has put together a movie music playlist for 2013 - also including Man of Steel and next week's The Secret Life of Walter Mitty - and it's viewable below. If you like what you hear, please subscribe to our Spotify account where you'll find more playlists.

The list features 75 songs written for movies over the last year, with artists including Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, U2, Coldplay, Kings Of Leon, Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and M83 all making the grade. Pharrell is included for his hit Happy, currently in the top 5 of the UK charts, which appears in Despicable Me 2, and other animated films make up a large proportion of those selected: Epic, Turbo, The Croods, Planes, Escape From Planet Earth and Monsters University all also get a mention.

Covering festivals far and wide throughout the year, we've become pretty adept at digging into the further reaches of various schedules. But we have to admit, for whatever reason, "You And The Night" ("Les Rencontres d'après minuit") escaped our notice when it played the Cannes Critics' Week this past spring. Which is a bit shameful considering none other than M83 scored the movie. But luckily, the artist himself has reminded his fans that he did more this year than just tune up Tom Cruise's space adventures in "Oblivion." Now, he's even dropped a track from the picture. Below, you can listen to "Ali & Mathias," from the Yann Gonzalez written and directed movie (yep, the helmer is the brother of Anthony Gonzalez aka M83) that tells the story of a young couple and their transvestite maid who prepare for an orgy with their guests The Slut, The Star, The Stud and The Teen.

A bit of a modern-day Romeo and Juliet — all in the span of a four-minute Killers song. The video for "Shot at the Night" (the song was produced by M83's Anthony Gonzalez and is off the Killers' upcoming album Direct Hits) stars Max Minghella (The Social Network) and Bella Heathcote (Dark Shadows) as Las Vegas lovers who meet one night and romp through the city lights. Romantic! Just as you always imagined Vegas.

The brilliant, bizarre You and the Night has found itself in a unique position. It played Cannes back in May, where it was the third most popular French film with Lgbt content at the film festival. Such a strange circumstance has probably never before been possible, and yet it happened. Blue Is the Warmest Color won the Palme d’Or, Stranger by the Lake won the Queer Palm, and You and the Night ended up the bridesmaid at an entirely unprecedented celebration of French queer cinema on the Croisette. This is a shame. You and the Night, the debut film by Yann Gonzalez, is nothing short of extraordinary. Its small-scale orgiastic plot is akin to the controlled sexual experiments of other, prior queer filmmakers like François Ozon (Sitcom) and Pier Paolo Pasolini (Teorema). Its style is of another ilk entirely. Gonzalez has tapped into a new twist on the chaotic abandon of his forebears, a...

Tom Cruise and his Oblivion director lift the lid on the movie's Bubbleship craft in a new behind-the-scenes video.
The science fiction blockbuster, out now on DVD, Blu-ray and download, is set 60 years in the future with Earth turned into a wasteland following an alien invasion. Cruise plays Jack Harper, a drone repair man and one of the last remaining human survivors.
Jack makes visits to the post-apocalyptic Earth's surface in the Bubbleship, a craft the film's designer calls "the most awesome movie vehicle ever".

Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski’s latest “original” sci-fi film Oblivion is a disappointing failure of the highest order. Tom Cruise is mostly wasted in a film that does nothing more than show off its expensive budget and fancy set pieces. Oblivion is far from original, often-times stealing from previous genre efforts entirely and rarely ever constructing an idea or thought of its own. Kosinski has grown as an action director, but fallen flat on his ass when it comes to writing a script with interesting concepts and characters that serve a purpose that’s bigger than highlighting one of the film’s impressively-shot action sequences.
Jack (Tom Cruise) is a glorified janitor living in a futuristic world where Earth has been abandoned. The only thing left is the aftermath of an alien attack and Jack and a few others must work in rotating shifts to scan the globe and...

Chicago – Does anyone else remember when sci-fi was fun? Sure, there have always been philosphical, “deep” pieces of science fiction like “2001” and “Blade Runner,” but the genre has become so stunningly self-serious this year. The weight of it nearly crushes “Elysium” and totally decimated “After Earth.” And then we have “Oblivion,” recently released on Blu-ray, a movie that looks great but thinks it has a lot more to say than it ultimately does. And it’s just not fun.
Rating: 5.0/5.0
While “Oblivion” is nowhere near the disaster of “After Earth” (and about on par with “Elysium”), it is still a disappointment. It clearly was inspired by a number of ’70s sci-fi films that are more about identity than machinery. The thematically cluttered film fails even in that regard though as the saga of a man who learns the truth about not just his past but his planet’s becomes weighed down with an action-packed,...

Tom Cruise never ceases to amaze me. People can go on and on about his crazy behavior and couch-jumping antics all they want. The bottom line is the guy is a good actor and isn't afraid to get his hands dirty. It's obvious he loves his job and goes to great lengths to do it, which includes doing his own stunts as much as a director or producer will allow. Oblivion is another excellent example of Tom Cruise at his finest.
The great thing is Oblivion benefits from having Cruise in it but doesn't rest on that alone. It's a great movie with beautiful scenery, above-average CGI, and an interesting blend of several different plotlines from classic sci-fi films of the past. The story elements aren't breaking any new ground. However, director Joseph Kosinski's concept of taking science fiction into the daylight should be recognized as a step in a different direction.

So yes, "Oblivion" landed this past week and it was a big, big hit taking nearly $40 million at the U.S. box office with another $61 million in the bank from overseas, leading to a very happy weekend for execs at Universal. And indeed, it was likely a nice couple of days for M83 aka Anthony Gonzalez, with the French electro-shoegaze maestro making it through this first Hollywood scoring gig, a major studio blockbuster and coming out looking pretty good. He even put in an appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" to help get the word out. But as he candidly tells Pitchfork, things weren't always so sunny on the movie. "I was on tour and they asked me for like three demos. I sent 17. I was working until 6 a.m. in the back of the bus. I put a lot of hard work on this job to get it. So when I got it,...

In Oblivion, the year is 2077: Jack Harper (Tom Cruise) braves Earth's barren wasteland 60 years after an alien race destroyed the moon which lead to global catastrophes and eventually, nuclear annihilation. Dressed in all white, armed with cool tech, Jack and his gal Vika (Andrea Riseborough) are the last ones left at Post 42. Writer-director Joseph Kosinski delivers a sci-fi adventure with the same world-building coolness he brought to his previous feature, Tron: Legacy. Morgan Freeman, and Game of Thrones' Nikolaj Coster-Waldau show up too, donning ready-to-wear Road Warrior black intent on a rebellion. The music by M83 is full on electronic like Daft Punk's score was for Legacy. Jack yearns for...

Tom Cruise could really use a box office hit right about now and "Oblivion" might be the film to do the trick. Already a success overseas, the sci-fi mindbender opens in the U.S. just two weeks ahead of the official summer movie season's launch with "Iron Man 3."
It's not just Cruise who could use a hit after a string of recent disappointments, but also the entire movie industry. So far the year has produced only three real hits ("Oz," "The Croods" and "Identity Thief") and a few modest overachievers ("Olympus Has Fallen," "Mama," "Safe Haven"), to say nothing of the even more troubling dearth of movies that are actually, you know, good.
