The story of the remarkable rise and horrific disasters that befell motor racing supremo Sir Frank Williams is told with unusual senstivity and openness
Here is a documentary profile of celebrated Formula One team owner Frank Williams that, while covering all the bases that its petrolhead/motorsport fanbase would expect, also manages to excavate some unexpectedly intense emotional baggage lurking under the surface.
Williams, of course, is one of the greats of British Formula One, a link to the 60s and early 70s era of high-risk, often-fatal daredevil circuit racing; Williams himself lost his first driver Piers Courage in 1970 at the Dutch Grand Prix. This film does a nice job of trying to explain some of the rarefied mechanics of Formula One, and how Williams toiled for years to improve his cars’ performance to top-level standard. As director Morgan Matthews tells it, Williams’ decision to appoint Patrick Head as his...

At the height of the Italian giallo boom in the early 1970s, scores of filmmakers turned their hand to crafting their own unique takes on these lurid murder-mystery thrillers. Emilio P. Miraglia may not be as well-known as Dario Argento or Mario Bava, but he did direct a distinct pair of thrillers that are out today on Blu-ray from Arrow Vide0: The Red Queen Kills Seven Times and In The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave.
In The Red Queen Kills Seven Times (1972), an age-old family curse hits sisters Kitty (Barbara Bouchet) and Franziska (Marina Malfatti) following the death of their grandfather Tobias (Rudolf Schündler). Every hundred years, so the legend goes, the bloodthirsty Red Queen returns and claims seven fresh victims. Was Tobias just the first… and are Kitty and Franziska next?

Arrow Video are doing a very good job of feeding my love of giallo movies. With the release of Killer Dames: Two Gothic Chillers by Emilio P. Miraglia they have provided us with The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave and The Red Queen Kills Seven Times, two Gothic tales that work well in fulfilling our lust for blood and violence in true Italian style.
The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave is somewhat of a strange beast because there is an ambiguity over which character is the evillest. We have Anthony Steffen playing Lord Alan Cunningham a character haunted by his dead wife Evelyn, but appears to have a fetish of inflicting pain (and possibly death) on women. Then we have the spectre of Evelyn, and the possibility of her returning from the grave. These scenarios both merge together in a twisted tale, which though predictable is still entertaining.

As a kid perusing the shelves of my local mom-and-pop video store every weekend, there were two VHS covers that scared me every time I looked at them. I made sure to avoid the box art for Neil Jordan’s horror fantasy film The Company of Wolves; something about the wolf’s snout protruding from a person’s mouth was too disturbing for my eight-year-old brain to comprehend. The second box, however, was one that I always made a point to walk past because while I found it gross and scary, I was weirdly drawn to it. I had no real desire to see the movie—if the cover was that nasty, the film itself had to be ten times more sick—but I was forever daring myself to sneak one more look at the video box. That movie was the 1983 horror comedy Microwave Massacre.

Movies that are described as “giallo” normally tend to depend on certain hallmarks, with the black-gloved killer killing their victims with a sharp knife. We as the audience follow the detective on their mission to hunt down this killer, with the inevitable big shocking finale. With What Have You Done To Solange? we get a film that does stick to these tropes quite heavily, but also subverts this very expectation to make the movie more memorable than most other films of this type.
When a sadistic killer is preying on girls at a Catholic school for girls the eyes of suspicion fall on a handsome teacher who is having an affair with one of the students.

For the first time ever, Donald Cammell’s obscure 1987 serial killer thriller White of the Eye is available on DVD and Blu-ray in the United States (the UK arm of Arrow Video brandished its own striking package of the title in early 2014). Director of only four features, including his iconic 1970 debut Performance (co-directed by Nicolas Roeg), Cammell’s quartet of features were all labors of love, the filmmaker undergoing significant set backs on each project up until his death following 1995’s Wild Side.
With seven to ten years in-between each outing, this feature marked the end of a decade long hiatus following 1977’s adaptation of the Dean Koontz novel Demon Seed starring Julie Christie. Adapting from an obscure novel by brothers Laurence and Andrew Klavan (a notable writer of mystery thrillers) writing under the pseudonym Margaret Tracy, Cammell’s wife and actress China Kong co-wrote the screenplay. A few months ago, EW interviewed director Nicholas Winding Refn about his upcoming coffee table book “The Act of Seeing,” an anthology of reprinted movie posters which Refn bought from little-known New York filmmaker Andy Milligan. “The Act of Seeing” was first made available through Austin, TX’s Fantastic Fest just over a month ago, but its history remains compelling. Over the course of a recent hour-long discussion at the BFI Film Festival, Refn (who curated the book) talks about its creation with the book’s author, Alan Jones, a noted film critic who reports frequently on horror pictures. From the start, Refn says “I have this collector-mania, where suddenly I get obsessed with stuff and I just buy and buy and buy… at one point, I got obsessed with the filmmaker called Andy Milligan, who [sic] is not something to be obsessed about,” Refn jokes, even though he wound up...

In 2006, Alan Jones of Total Film coined the term "Splat Pack" to identify a group of young directors who were making waves at the box office with a crop of ultra-violent, hard-r horror films like "Hostel" (Eli Roth), "High Tension" (Alexandre Aja) and "Saw" (James Wan). Included in that group was Neil Marshall, who made his feature directorial debut with 2002's well-received werewolf horror-comedy "Dog Soldiers" and hit a high point with 2005's "The Descent," a harrowingly bleak, blood-drenched creature feature about a group of spelunkers being terrorized by pale-skinned humanoid cave dwellers. Though Marshall has dipped in and out of horror in the years since -- his recent credits include the 2010 historical actioner "Centurion" and two episodes of HBO's "Game of Thrones" -- he remains most closely associated with the genre that made him a star. Now he's making a return to form with "Tales of Halloween," a new ten-part anthology film created,...

Nicolas Winding Refn is a consummate film nerd, but he also admits he’s no walking film encyclopedia. “I guess it’s an assumption maybe. I haven’t seen every movie ever made, and I can’t quote every movie ever made. I leave that up to other people that are more obsessive about it.” Ever the media-friendly filmmaker, Refn interviews these days are a frequent occurrence. This time out, he’s promoting a new book he edited (written by Alan Jones), "Nicolas Winding Refn: The Act Of Seeing" (available for pre-order now). It’s a collection of more than 300 posters, curated by Refn, of exploitation rarities, mostly from the '60s and '70s, all featured in a heavy, gorgeously-rendered hardcover tome. Or as he gleefully admits, “a very expensive book, but about trash.” Refn arrives in Austin today as part of a touring roadshow for the book, and...

When I'm out of town, mail tends to pile up, and when I get back, it's hard to sort the pile and figure out what to watch or read first. It was not difficult to figure out what to read first when I got back from Toronto, because one of the packages I had waiting for me contained "The Act Of Seeing," a new book curated by Nicolas Winding Refn and written by Alan Jones. That's all I knew about it before I sat down with it, but I immediately lost two full hours to just slowing paging through, taking in all the remarkable sleazy detail of each of the posters reproduced inside and getting lost in the crisp, engrossing text that Alan Jones has put together for each of the films. What posters? What films? When I got Refn on the phone to talk about the book, my first...

Director, screenwriter, producer Nicolas Winding Refn is poised to add another title to his resume this fall: author. The Danish filmmaker is soon to publish a book that highlights over 300 of his favorite movie posters. Titled “Nicolas Winding Refn: The Act of Seeing,” and featuring copy by film critic and horror reporter Alan Jones, the massive collection reprints the posters, which Refn painstakingly placed in a very particular order. The project has been in the works for over three years — the amount of time it took Refn to peruse his poster collection, decide what made the cut, and paginate the selected entries. He deems it “a bit like editing a movie — what experience would you want to have when you turned the pages?” Read More: The 20 Best Movie Posters Of 2014 In an interview with EW, Refn explains that “The Act of Seeing” indirectly came about roughly five years ago...

The fifth film in the "Mission: Impossible" series, 'Rogue Nation,' had its world premiere in Vienna earlier this week ahead of a global launch late next week.
The series has had a rocky history though there's no question that the John Woo-directed second film is seen as an outright dud. Whether Brian DePalma's espionage-oriented first film or J.J. Abrams action-driven third film is better depends upon whom you talk to though both seem to be pretty close.
What is clear is that Brad Bird's fourth film, "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol," was a winner both with audiences and critics - garnering good reviews and way more box-office than any of the previous entries, revitalising the brand.
The good news is reviews for 'Rogue Nation' so far indicate writer/director Christopher McQuarrie has continued the uptick in quality and has delivered something at least on par -...

Arrow Video unveils one of the most impressive Blu-ray packages of 2015 with its remastered presentation of Brian Yuzna’s languished body horror classic Society. Completed in 1989, along with the writer/producer’s sophomore effort Bride of Re-Animator, his debut wouldn’t see theatrical release in the Us until 1992, several months after David Cronenberg unveiled similar monstrous sphincter designs in the celebrated Naked Lunch. Though it’s generated a loyal cult following, and was treated to a 2002 DVD release that’s long been out of print, Yuzna’s class conscious metaphor still manages to unsettle with its inspired gross-out spectacle, gifting audiences a finale every bit as memorable as Cronenberg’s early provocations.

Screen reports from the opening night of Film4 FrightFest which saw the UK premiere of Adam Wingard’s The Guest.
Film4 FrightFest veteran Andy Nyman was keen to highlight that - despite its new home at the Vue Leicester Square - FrightFest was going to be exactly the same in its 15th edition.
“All the things you know and love are exactly the same. You are still going to have to queue endlessly for a piss, probably miss the beginning of the film you want to see,” joked Nyman.
Nyman was given the tricky task of following Bobcat Goldthwait, who introduced last year’s festival, and passed with flying colour thanks to a series of gently mocking insults, including the new style of splitting the Main Screen programme across three screens.
“You may or may not know that they have divided the screens into groups: the Horror Channel screen is for goths; Discovery Screens 1 and 2 are for virgins...

In life there are ‘certainties’ and then there are ‘near certainties.’ Whilst the former might be represented by the rising and setting of the sun, the latter is most fittingly represented by Adam Green’s on and off the screen FrightFest attendance record. With a slight sense of amazement he reflected, “Every movie I have ever made has played here… every single one… its crazy.” In 2014 the trend is set to continue as the lights fade in the Discovery Screen 1 on Saturday evening for Digging up the Marrow!
So as Green prepares for his eighth FrightFest in nine years [abstaining from FrightFest 2012 not by free will and with an amusing story to the value of $75,000 to follow] he took us behind the story of one filmmaker and one festival.
There’s no better place to start than at the beginning, so how did your FrightFest journey begin?
Hatchet had world premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York, and whilst it did great, Tribeca is not a genre festival.

“I’m your boyfriend now, Nancy.” It may be hard to believe, but it’s been thirty years since Robert Englund’s Freddy Krueger said those words to Heather Langenkamp’s Nancy in Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street. A 30th anniversary screening of the film is taking place at this year’s Film4 FrightFest, and Englund has been announced as a member of a guest lineup that includes Alan Moore.
Taking place at London’s Vue West End, the 15th Film4 FrightFest will run from August 21st – 25th. In addition to celebrating the 30th anniversary of A Nightmare on Elm Street, Robert Englund will also be unveiling his latest film, The Last Showing.
Actress Maika Monroe will be on hand for the UK premiere of The Guest, and director John McNaughton (Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer) will screen his latest film, The Harvest. Also of note...

Englund's iconic Krueger.
Freddy Krueger himself - or at least the man who played him, Robert Englund - is to make a special appearance at this year's Film4 Frightfest, it was announced today. Besides A Nightmare On Elm Street, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, the 67 year old actor has also starred in genre hits from V to Strippers Vs Werewolves, as well as playing a memorable Phantom of the Opera. “Englund is one of the genre’s originals and we are thrilled to host such an icon of fright,” said festival co-director Alan Jones.
Also big news for fans is a scheduled appearance by legendary author and noted recluse Alan Moore, creator of the original comics behind From Hell, V For Vendetta and Watchmen. Moore will introduce his new short film triptych Show Pieces along with its director, Mitch Jenkins.
Other stars joining the line-up are horror's latest.
