Part of what makes Samuel L. Jackson one of the great American actors is that he isn't precious about the projects he chooses. If you go to his IMDb, you will see that there are over 200 credits listed there as an actor, and the range of projects could not be more vast. Alongside "Star Wars" and Marvel, you have very silly mid-budget studio comedies, independent dramas, meat and potatoes action thrillers, voiceover work, and films by some of the finest auteurs of recent memory. The man has done just about everything you could do as a film actor, and he isn't showing any signs of slowing down in the slightest, even if he is in his mid-70s.
Even though he isn't precious about the projects he does, that is not the same as not caring. On the contrary, Samuel L. Jackson could not have built a career like this...

Before Samuel L. Jackson was Marvel’s Nick Fury, he was always a superhero to longtime co-star Anthony Mackie.
The “Captain America: New World Order” actor revealed that Jackson was like a father to him on set across early films “The Man” (2005) and “Freedomland” (2006) before the duo joined the MCU with “The Avengers” in 2012. Mackie and Jackson have starred in a total of nine films together so far across 18 years.
“Sam Jackson taught me a lot, like from afar,” Mackie said during the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast. “Three of my earliest movies were with Sam Jackson and because of that, my set etiquette is a complete replica of Sam Jackson. He literally was my work dad. He taught me everything about the business from afar.”
Mackie continued, “And every night I’d ask him a question and he’d give me one of his answers, ‘Shut up, motherfucker!’ and I would take that.

Richard Price wasn't exactly the most obvious choice to adapt Stephen King's 2018 book "The Outsider" into a TV mini-series. Far from a novice in this area, Price had already adapted novels like "The Color of Money" and even his own books "Clockers" and "Freedomland" into films. But his speciality had always been crime thrillers and mysteries that pit their leads against firmly human horrors, rather than fantastical foes like the creature at the heart of King's story.
In Price's hands, "The Outsider" is less "It" and more "True Detective," despite the ancient child-killing entity at the heart of its plot. It's also a ghost story, if not in the typical sense. In a change from King's original novel, the show's protagonist, detective Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn), is haunted by the death of his young son from cancer some years prior to the series' events. As Price saw it, this...

Exclusive: Dorian Missick (Shirley), Pamela Reed (Outside In), Amanda Warren and Jim Klock (The Underground Railroad) will round out the cast of Prime Video’s The Burial, which is currently in production.
They’re set to star alongside previously announced cast members including Jamie Foxx, Tommy Lee Jones, Jurnee Smollett, Mamoudou Athie and Bill Camp.
Based on the New Yorker article by Jonathan Harr, The Burial follows a charismatic personal injury lawyer famous for his impressive track record and loudly unconventional approach who decides to help a funeral home owner save his family business from a predatory corporate behemoth. In a move to bring emotional resonance to a dry contract law case, the lawyer digs up an unexpected and complex web of race, power and oppression that forces everyone to examine long-buried prejudices they didn’t know they had.
Maggie Betts is directing from a script by Doug Wright.

March 2022 is a great month for blonde women with cold, dead stares on Hulu.
With its list of new releases for March 2022, Hulu is highlighting two major original series ripped straight from the headlines. The first is The Dropout, which premieres on March 3. This show stars Amanda Seyfried (taking over from the previously cast Kate McKinnon) as Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes. This story about high-level corporate fraud is truly wild, enough so to accommodate several books, podcasts, and even an upcoming film starring Jennifer Lawrence. Hulu is certainly hoping its version is the definitive one.

The summer movie season may be winding down but Amazon Prime still has a hit or two up its sleeve in August 2021.
Amazon’s list new arrivals this month is highlighted by Evangelion:3.0+1.01 Thrice Upon A Time. That may be a mouthful of a name but it’s a big deal in the anime world. The streamer nagged exclusive rights to the final film in the Neon Genesis Evangelion film franchise known as “Rebuild of Evangelion”. With the future of the franchise up in the air, this could be the last chance in awhile for anime fans worldwide to catch some mecha action.

Film aficionados will want to keep an eye on Amazon Prime Video in August, as the streaming giant is set to debut two Cannes Film Festival premieres: “Val,” a new documentary about Val Kilmer that uses archival footage shot by the actor himself, and “Annette,” Leos Carax award-winning musical (it won best director at Cannes) starring Adam Driver and Maron Cotillard and featuring music by Ron and Russell Mael of Sparks.
But beyond the Prime Video originals, the Amazon library content added to the service next month is vast and impressive. Among the major movies coming to Prime Video include “Aliens,” “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” “Jaws,” “Moneyball,” and “Predator.” Meanwhile, IMDb TV, the free service that users can access without a corresponding Amazon Prime subscription, will host “Apollo 13,” “La La Land,” and “Ghostbusters” among many other big titles.

In honor of their lifetime of achievements, Spelman College will name a renovated theater, lobby, dressing rooms and supporting areas the Latanya Richardson Jackson and Samuel L. Jackson Performing Arts Center.
Located in the John D. Rockefeller Fine Arts Building, the updated arts center is being made possible by a lead gift from the Hobson/Lucas Family Foundation along with generous donations from Richardson Jackson and Jackson, Bank of America and David Rockefeller Jr.
At the height of the Black Arts Movement in the 1970s, actress-producer-director Latanya Richardson Jackson, C’71, was honing her significant talents on the stage of the Baldwin Burroughs Theatre in Spelman’s John D. Welcome to The Night Of's day after, when viewers are undoubtedly experiencing the slightly woozy, vaguely hungover sensation that accompanies eight weeks of investment in a TV show and the promise of a potentially earth-shaking pay-off that, in the end, can be filed under mileage-may-vary. To be fair, it was apparent very early on that this HBO miniseries wasn't likely to dominate the modern equivalent of water-cooler discussions in a way that, say, the true-crime phenomenon Making a Murderer did last winter, or the spot-the-Reagan-era-reference game that was Stranger Things...

Drawing influences from The Wire, this HBO show boldly tackles race in the face of the criminal justice system.
After a string of disappointments and a lot of drama, HBO can finally rest easy with its promising summer murder mystery series The Night Of. Based on the BBC show Criminal Justice, The Night Of follows Nasir “Nas” Khan (Riz Ahmed), a smart young Pakistani American who finds himself at the center of a police investigation after a night on the town goes horribly wrong. The show recalls the procedural aspects of Law and Order and True Detective, but operates more like The Wire in its examination of race and the criminal justice system through the eyes of the investigators and the accused. The show’s first episode, titled “The Beach,” breaks down the events of “the night of” as Nas remembers it, and then some. In true procedural fashion, we get to play detective and guess what...

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Don't get me wrong... guys can be hellish too, but anyone who has ever had a run-in with a vengeful loony with a vagina can attest to this fact. Case in point: the latest "devilish noir" flick to head our way, A Wife Alone.
The film will be available through major cable/satellite and On Demand enabled platforms across the United States on June 10th.
From the Press Release
A feature film by Justin Reichman, A Wife Alone is a dark psychological thriller about an ill-fated marriage in the suburbs of upstate New York. The plot centers around Jane, an attractive young bride who marries a naive investment banker named Park, desperate to marry before his 30th birthday.
The young, ostensibly happy couple buys a quaint house in a nice neighborhood and settles into the suburban dream before a visit to Park's godparents,...

Based on the first novel from a popular trilogy, this sounds like a melding of John Le Carre and Stieg Larsson (of course, mainplayers Rapace and Oldman might be responsible for that ambiance as well). Helmed by Swedish director Daniel Espinosa, who received wide acclaim with his 2010 film, Easy Money, we’re hoping this gets more traction than his 2012 English language debut, Safe House. A killer (and very masculine) cast should make this one to watch for, though screenwriter Richard Price can be a bit iffy. He’s been working television since his last feature screenplay, which was 2006’s Freedomland…but we’re hoping this is the same caliber...

Starz has made changes to its Encore pack of channels citing the nation’s evolving demographics and focusing on groups who over-index in viewing within the premium pay TV category. That translates to shuffling some of the eight Encore-branded channels to target baby boomers, Black and Latino audiences and the company acquiring older TV series to serve them, something rarely done on premium cable which is traditionally built on movies and original series. Starz also is launching a horror block on Encore Suspense. Beginning December 2, 2013, Encore Drama will be replaced by Encore Black, a channel catering to the African-American community, traditionally over-indexed on premium channel viewership. The channel’s programming lineup will include Martin Lawrence’s 1st Amendment Stand Up and off-network series What’s Happening!!, Diff’rent Strokes, 227, and Amen. The December launch will spotlight actor Samuel L. Jackson with films such as Unbreakable, Losing Isaiah, Freedomland and One Eight Seven.

While he probably won.t be remembered for his lackluster directorial efforts like Freedomland and America.s Sweethearts, Joe Roth is quite adept at producing, and his decades-long career has been heating up over the last few thanks to some major box office earners. Craig here with Take Three, a weekly look at a character/supporting actor's career through three movies. Today: Anthony Mackie. Mackie’s had a sprinkling of leads so far (Spike Lee’s controversial She Hate Me, the period drama Night Catches Us, and the upcoming biopic Bolden!), and he’ll undoubtedly get a star-making role of his own someday soon. But in the meantime he’s working hard to create a still very-much-on-the-rise profile as an exemplary supporting player in a variety of fine films.
Take One: Half Nelson (2006)
Mackie puts in a vital sincere performance in 2006 indie drama Half Nelson. He’s Frank, a former friend of Drey’s (Shareeka Epps) jailed brother and a Brooklyn drug dealer, who is intent on dragging Drey into his orbit as a local drug mule. That's an idea that her teacher Dan (Ryan Gosling) takes umbrage with, especially in one riveting scene...

It’s coming up on March and fans of J.J. Abrams know what that means. Since the release of a teaser during the Super Bowl for Super 8 (Abrams’ latest effort with producer Steven Spielberg), fanboys everywhere have scoured the interweb to find all the footage and dissecting every frame of it for clues about the plot and its characters as those details are still a much closely guarded secret – up until now. All that sleuthing has paid off as some very pertinent images were pinpointed in the teaser’s final seconds when the camera flickers during the title such as these ones:

It's time to have a good cry with Julianne Moore. Good grief, she cry's so much in her films that when you see it all edited together like this it's freakin' hilarious! The video called, Julianne Moore Loves to Cry, comes from pajiba's video editor Harry Hanrahan, and here's a note from the site:
It’s a telling video; if you ever want to minimize the talent of an actor, try isolating similar moments from different movies and reducing them to one three-minute video. The video is initially somber, but as you see the same face repeat itself through the video, it grows increasingly absurd.
I couldn't help but laugh through most of the video, enjoy!

Principal photography began today in West Virginia on J.J. Abrams’ mysterious new movie, Super 8, starring Kyle Chandler and 12-year-old actress Elle Fanning.
A Paramount Pictures press release confirmed Chandler and Fanning as the leads, which we reported this morning, and added some relatively-known character actors Ron Eldard (Freedomland), Noah Emmerich (Beautiful Girls) with relatively-unknown actors Gabriel Basso (The Big C), Joel Courtney, Riley Griffiths, Ryan Lee and Zach Mills (Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium).
J.J. Abrams is writing and directing the movie. It wasn’t clear what roles any of the cast members would be playing at this time, so let the speculation begin. The movie is one that Abrams is co-producing with Steven Spielberg, under the Amblin Entertainment banner. It will ode itself to the classic films that Spielberg used to make, such as Close Encounters of the Third Kind or Jaws. The movie is presumed to follow...

Principal photography began Monday in West Virginia on J.J. Abrams’ mysterious new movie, Super 8, starring “Friday Night Lights” coach Kyle Chandler and 12-year-old actress Elle Fanning.
A Paramount Pictures press release confirmed Chandler and Fanning as the leads, and added relatively unknown actors Ron Eldard (Freedomland), Noah Emmerich (Beautiful Girls), Gabriel Basso (’The Big C”), Joel Courtney, Riley Griffiths, Ryan Lee and Zach Mills (Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium).
In typical Abrams’ fashion, we know very little about what the movie is about. Outside of a few seemingly unrelated viral marketing reveals, we unfortunately only know what was shown in the roughly two minute teaser trailer of a mysterious train derailing that contains an unseen menace. There have been unconfirmed rumors that the story centers on three young children who discover alien footage on a Super 8 reel.

Chris Egan, Kevin Zegers and Anthony Mackie are apparently being pursued for roles in the Brad Bird-directed "Mission: Impossible 4" for Paramount Pictures reports The Wrap.
It's unclear whether the actors are in competition with one another or whether there are several parts to be cast. Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg are already set to work on the project
Egan is 26-year-old Australian actor who first scored fame as a young blond hunk on the soap "Home and Away", the beach-set drama which helped launch the careers of the likes of Simon Baker, Heath Ledger, Isla Fisher, Melissa George, Naomi Watts and Chris Hemsworth.
Moving to the U.S., he scored minor roles in "Resident Evil: Afterlife", "Eragon" and the mini-series "Empire" before landing the lead role in NBC"s acclaimed but short-lived U.S. monarchy series "Kings". He most recently played the male lead in "Letters to Juliet...

Bruce Willis and Sigourney Weaver have joined the cast of Mabrouk El Mechri’s upcoming project titled The Cold Light of Day.
The movie is being described as kidnapping thriller, and already stars “The Tudors” Henry Cavill as “a young American whose family is kidnapped while on a vacation to Spain.
He’s left with only hours to find them, uncover a government conspiracy and the connection between their disappearance and his father’s secrets.”
Bruce Willis will play Cavill’s father while Weaver will be playing against type as someone involved with the kidnapping plot, or, if you prefer – the villain.
Filming is expected to begin this September, and Scott Wiper (from “The Condemned”) and John Petro wrote the original script which Richard Price (from “Freedomland”) is finessing.
Pretty interesting cast, indeed, and pretty busy actors as well.
Let us remind you that Willis is currently attached to the video game adaptation Kane & Lynch,...

St. Trinian's II: The Legend of Fritton's Gold
Opens: 2010
Cast: Colin Firth, Rupert Everett, David Tennant, Gemma Arterton, Talulah Riley
Director: Oliver Parker, Barnaby Thompson
Summary: A rollercoaster-style treasure hunt for the legendary Fritton’s Gold ensues as the feisty and ever-resourceful schoolgirls of St Trinian’s face their most fearsome establishment rivals yet - the villainous Pomfrey and his sidekicks from the women-hating secret society known as AD1.
Analysis: While it didn't travel much beyond the UK, 2007's reboot of the "St Trinian's" franchise nearly doubled its £7 million production budget in sales in the UK alone - making it one of the top grossing independent British films of the past decade. Reviews were decidedly mixed but generally pretty weak at the time, so the greenlighting of a sequel surprised quite a few.

If you happen to be in NY this weekend, this is your last chance to see the latest free Shakespeare in the Park production, Euripides' The Bacchae. (Common wisdom says these free shows are always sold out but I had no trouble getting in so try it, especially if it's wet outside) The greek tragedy plays like a slightly gender-fucked avant garde musical in this particular production. I had seen it once before 13 years ago and the only thing I remembered about it was the absolutely sick gory finale. It's still disgustingly bloody.
Jonathan Groff (Spring Awakening) goes for a smeared lipstick rock god style Dionysys. His nonbeliever victim is none other than familiar screen actor Anthony Mackie.
One could argue that both actors are having a great summer. See also: Taking Woodstock (Groff) and The Hurt Locker (Mackie).
I know I haven't given The Hurt Locker enough play this summer at the blog.

We can only hope that the new Will Smith collaboration with director Gabriele Muccino is half as good as their previous film, The Pursuit of Happyness. I've seen it probably five or six times over the past two years, and it gets better every time I watch it.
That has more to do with Smith than anything else; it's easily his best performance but it's so natural for him that it doesn't look like he's working hard at all. If you want evidence of an actor working too hard, check out Tom Cruise in The Last Samurai or Julianne Moore in Freedomland.
The new Smith-Muccino film is Seven Pounds, which co-stars Rosario Dawson, and like Happyness, it seems well-oiled for awards season. Smith plays an IRS agent who tries to make up for the mistakes of his past by helping seven strangers in their times of need.

- If there is a subgenre that I don't care to see Julianne Moore's acting chops its in the supernatural/thriller kind....more specifically, paycheck films such as The Forgotten, Freedomland and last year's Next. Variety reports that the actress will play the title role in the same genre fair - an American film debut from the duo behind Swedish film Storm. The 22-25 million dollar project scripted by Michael Cooney ("Identity") is being produced by Nalafilms. Shelter follows a female forensic psychiatrist who specializes in debunking multiple personality disorder. When she discovers that her latest patient's various personalities are all murder victims, she struggles to find a logical explanation for the man's delusion. I believe Nala picked up the project from turnaround - Intermedia had the rights to the project back in 04'. Mans Marlind (an American Film Institute grad) and Bjorn Stein will begin filming in late March in Pittsburgh.

The New Zealand-born director is repped by CAA and attorney Walter Teller.
Price, whose screenwriting credits include Freedomland and Mad Dog and Glory, also is a best-selling author who has penned such novels as Clockers and The Wanderers.
He is handled by CAA.

The four-day Presidents Day holiday weekend will offer three new wide releases with wide-ranging demographic appeal. Walt Disney Pictures' PG-rated Eight Below, from Buena Vista Pictures distribution, and 20th Century Fox's teen-oriented comedy Date Movie seem to be the prime contenders for the top spot, with most observers giving a slight edge to Eight Below because of its broader appeal. Sony Pictures' R-rated dramatic thriller Freedomland also is opening this weekend, but prerelease tracking doesn't have the film contending for a position among the top three. However, the distributor's The Pink Panther is expected to be in that mix during its sophomore frame. The Steve Martin starrer, from director Shawn Levy, debuted at No. 1 last weekend with $20.2 million.

Revolution Studios, whose current production/distribution agreement with Sony Pictures expires at the end of next year, has begun negotiations to extend the pact. Although it is expected that Sony will demand terms more favorable for the studio, Revolution, whose future at Sony once looked questionable, should remain firmly within the Sony fold. While Revolution founder Joe Roth is directing his sixth movie, the racial drama Freedomland, on location in New York, studio sources said attorney Skip Brittenham is negotiating a new deal on Revolution's behalf with Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman Michael Lynton. Revolution, which was founded in 2000, has released 28 films and has three more releases scheduled for this year: XXX: State of the Union, the action sequel that Sony will release April 29; the horror remake The Fog; and Chris Columbus' adaptation of the Broadway musical Rent. Freedomland and the Adam Sandler comedy Bench Warmers are on Revolution's 2006 release schedule. That record leaves the 5-year-old Revolution just three films shy of fulfilling its original 36-film minimum commitment made to its equity partners.
