Spain’s animation services and VFX industry is booming as never before, positioning itself as a leading hub in the global landscape.
With tax rebates firing up Spain’s audiovisual industry, the animation sector has produced 16 feature films, 72 seasons of TV series and 156 short films from 2020-2022, according to toon and VFX federation Diboos.
The 2019 Sergio Pablos-directed Netflix feature “Klaus” snagged seven Annie awards, while Alberto Mielgo’s “The Windshield Wiper” won the 2022 Oscar for animated short film.
Spanish animated features have also connected with international audiences: This year, Juan Jesús García Galocha’s “Mummies,” from 4Cats and Atresmedia Cine, grossed $52 million worldwide, handled by Warner Bros.
Another strategy for international success consists in luring the interest of powerful foreign players to invest in local talent and resources.
Most prominently, Skydance Animation has landed in Madrid, while France’s Fortiche and In Efecto have launched operations in the Canary Islands.

The new year is continuing apace at Hulu. The streamer’s list of new releases for February 2022 is highlighted by one very interesting project.
Pam and Tommy is set to premiere on Feb. 2. Perhaps the Groundhog Day release date is intentional as the show will cover a particular moment of celebrity, sex, and exploitation from the early ’90s that seems to have repeated itself over and over. Sebastian Stan and Lily James star as Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson and the series follows the events and fallout of their homemade sex tape being stolen and unleashed on a nascent internet. If nothing else, getting the promo photos of Stan and James as the ’90s stars was worth it.

Dwayne Johnson is no stranger to sci-fi, having tackled a number of different roles in almost every imaginable twist on the genre, and the results have been unsurprisingly inconsistent. After first dipping his toes into the water when he was still a full-time professional wrestler in a 2000 episode of Star Trek: Voyager, his next foray into sci-fi couldn’t have gone much worse.
Richard Kelly’s Southland Tales was a bizarre abomination that reeked of intentionally abstract self-indulgence and rode a wave of critical apathy to a box office total of less than $375,000. From there, Johnson has revisited the genre in the form of tedious video game adaptation Doom, the bland and forgettable Race to Witch Mountain remake, completely ignored animation Planet 51 and the surprisingly entertaining Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.

Every month comes and every month this article demands to be written. It’s a tragic, inescapable fact that movies leave streaming services all the time, but it’s a privilege to be able to inform you when their number is up. I well up every time. No joke. I put a box of Kleenex on standby. Honest.

Barça Studios and Sony Music Latin Iberia are teaming to produce “Talent Explorers,” an animated series which marks the third title from Barça Studios, the burgeoning film-tv content arm of F.C. Barcelona, one of the world’s biggest soccer clubs.
The series – which sees Max, a 15 year-old boy, Roc, big bear with a heart of gold, and Lynds, a tech-savvy pink kitten, travel the world, scouting for the next generation of soccer stars, – marks the third title at Barça Studios, after first team player doc series “Matchday,” just released by Netflix in Latin America.
A second title, “La Masia,” represents Barça Studios’ first scripted series, set at the soccer club’s youth academy, and written by Albert Espinosa, creator of the Filmax-produced “The Red Band Society,” one of the most re-versioned Spanish series in its TV History, including a U.S. makeover adapted for Fox by Steven Spielberg...

There are few surefire successes in television. It just so happens that with its new releases for May 2020, Hulu almost certainly found itself one. May 8 sees the debut of all eight episodes of Solar Opposites, the latest sci-fi animated effort from Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland. This is a brand new story featuring a family of aliens crashing to Earth and learning to live amongst the rest of us weirdos. But the animation style and sci-fi themes hew so closely to Rick and Morty that there’s no way this won’t be a hit.
On the off chance Solar Opposites doesn’t set the world ablaze, Hulu has some other intriguing content lottery tickets for May. The Great premieres on May 15 and is a comedic period piece about Catherine the Great starring Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult. You can’t accuse Hulu of not taking big swings this month!

Two months ago at Bordeaux’s Cartoon Movie, Europe’s biggest animated movie showcase, no country made a larger impact than Spain.
A sneak peek of footage from Raul de la Fuente’s “Another Day of Life,” capturing war correspondent Ryszard Kapuściński’s life-haunting experience in Angola’s civil war, dazzled Cartoon Movie with the verve of its animation/live-action mix. The $20 million “Dragonkeeper,” about a feisty washer-girl slave turned dragon protector, sparked enthusiasm for its story and Western-Chinese animation meld. Alberto Vázquez (“Birdboy: The Forgotten Children”) drew the showcase’s second-biggest audience for in-the-works “Unicorn Wars,” about an ancestral battle between Teddy bears and unicorns. And Madrid-based Latido Films won Distributor of the Year for “Buñuel in the Labyrinth of Turtles,” about Luis Buñuel’s shooting of 1933’s “Land Without Bread.”

The movie Spark has a teen Monkey and his friends in an intergalactic battle. It sounds like this is verging on the ridiculous but let’s go with it anyway, it is an animation after all and it has some pretty decent names attached too. Let’s give the trailer a whirl below.
In a world which looks to be inhabited by Monkeys, Foxes and Hogs, we find Spark and his friends hiding out in an underground bunker after the planet was destroyed by the evil Monkey Zhong. Spark wants to stop being treated as a kid so he can join his friends on a mission to save the world from Zhong’s evil plan. Obviously, this loony animation is aimed at an audience no older than the age of five.

For some reason, Hollywood fell in love with British actors again in the 1990s. Just as one one might wonder why it is that extraterrestrial life hasn’t been discovered yet, you’d think the existence of a solid 3D-animated film about a loveable alien is something we could confirm by the year 2015. From E.T. to Lilo & Stitch, the slam-dunk appeal of adorable interlopers from space has proven itself time and time again, but cracking this particular old chestnut in the age of 3D has only bred the likes of Planet 51 and Escape From Planet Earth. (Monsters vs. Aliens fails this test on account of siding squarely with the Monsters). Safely designed to minimize any potentially alienating elements, Home, the newest effort from DreamWorks Animation, does not mark an end to the search for a higher form of animated entertainment.
Adapted from Adam Rex’s 2007 children’s book The True Meaning of Smekday, Home follows the comfortable “mismatched buddies on a road trip” formula.

The Wrap report that former WWE champ Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is in talks to voice a character called Maui in Moana, which is Disney's next CG-animated comedy-adventure from The Little Mermaid team of Ron Clements and John Musker. Maui is described as "a demi-god who aids a young girl on a nautical adventure." Johnson hasn't done that much voice-work, his only other credit being 2009's Planet 51. According to the site, an actress for the main character of Moana is still being sought. Below is an official promo image and synopsis for the movie. Moana is set in the ancient South Pacific world of Oceania. Moana, a born navigator, searches for a fabled island and her incredible journey teams with her hero, the legendary demi-god Maui, as they traverse the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous sea creatures, breathtaking underworlds and ancient folklore.

A Good Day to Die Hard opened in first place over Presidents Day weekend, though it was overshadowed to some extent by strong runner-up performances from Safe Haven and Escape From Planet Earth. Meanwhile, Beautiful Creatures was such a huge miss that it could temporarily quell the post-Twilight young adult adaptation craze. For the four-day holiday weekend, the Top 12 grossed $149.4 million, which is off around 13 percent from the same period last year. Overall, the month of February is on pace to wind up significantly off from last year's record-setting $818.2 million gross.A Good Day to Die Hard grossed $28.6 million over the four-day period, which ranks 10th all-time among Presidents Day openers. That's a bit underwhelming for a heavily-marketed franchise movie: in comparison, Unknown opened to $25.5 million on Presidents Day 2011, while Safe House tallied $27.5 million over Presidents Day last year (which was the movie's second weekend). Extraterrestrials have been a frequent visitor to movie theaters the past few years. However, when it comes to family friendly fare like Monsters Vs. Aliens, Megamind, Mars Needs Moms, and Planet 51, they generally haven't been faring too well. Monsters Vs. Aliens and Megamind both scored with critics, but the second proved a disappointment at the box office, while Mars Needs Moms and Planet 51 full-on flopped on both fronts. All this means The Weinstein Company's upcoming alien-centric animated adventure Escape from Planet Earth is one risky venture. Cal Brunker steps up from storyboard artist to director on this film, bringing with him his experience from such dazzling animated efforts as Horton Hears a Who!, 9 and Despicable Me. Here he helms a narrative that follows a hot shot alien astronaut named Scorch Supernova (Brendan Fraser), who must depend on his brainy brother Gary Supernova (Rob Corddry) to come to his...

Anyhoo, check out a trailer for the new CG movie “Escape from Planet Earth”, which boasts the synopsis: The 3D animated family comedy catapults moviegoers to planet Baab where admired astronaut Scorch Supernova (Fraser) is a national hero to the blue alien population. A master of daring rescues, Scorch pulls off astonishing feats with the quiet aid of his nerdy, by-the-rules brother, Gary (Corddry), head of mission control at Basa. When Basa’s no-nonsense chief Lena (Alba) informs the brothers of an Sos from a notoriously dangerous planet, Scorch rejects Gary’s warnings and bounds off for yet another exciting mission. But when Scorch finds himself caught in a fiendish trap set by the evil Shanker (Gandolfini), it’s up to scrawny,...

Although he passed on Akira — which is almost certainly dead in its own right (this is the moment Deadline reports a new helmer has been found) — Gary Oldman needs a genre project to occupy his time and amplify his bank account. With that, THR informs us he’s now signing for RoboCop, the José Padilha-directed, Joel Kinnaman-led remake of Paul Verhoeven‘s still-beloved, still-controversial social parody.
Oldman‘s role, once rumored for Edward Norton, will be that of Norton, “the scientist who creates Robocop and finds himself torn between the ideals of the machine trying to rediscover its humanity and the callous needs of a corporation.” The biggest point of interest for the RoboCop faithful — if they’re even behind this new film — would be that mere description; it confirms they’re going in a direction that’s at least slightly different from the original, a direction with (possibly) more moral quandaries.

I think we can all agree that aliens have been castrated. Instead of the destructive and vile creatures that they're capable of being like in The Thing, Predator, Alien, or Mars Attacks!, it seems like year after year we have “nice guy” alien movies like Paul or Planet 51. Sure, there have been some good ones that stand out - District 9 and Super 8 come to mind. But nothing has been quite on the scale of Independence Day with an alien force that is fully capable of destroying the earth. While we may only see the aliens in the first issue of Saucer Country for maybe four panels, you can tell they mean business.
There are a few things in the comic world that are guaranteed to make a comic fan squeal with excitement. One of them of course is the phrase “New Vertigo series."

From the visionary fimmaker of 28 Weeks Later comes a creepy little film called Intruders. This one looks right up our alley and releases in March. Check out the trailer under the official details.
Though no one can see him, Hollow Face lurks in the corners, desperately desiring love but only knowing how to spread fear and hate. He creeps into the life of John Farrow (Clive Owen) after Farrow’s beloved 13-year-old daughter Mia (Ella Purnell) is assaulted in their home. The line between the real and the imaginary blurs as fissures start to open within the family unit. It seems that no security measure can keep Hollow Face out.

If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance that you love Gary Oldman. I can’t speak for you, but I do because he’s talented, charismatic, daring, and the owner of a killer brogue — which means that he’s also wanted by everyone in Hollywood. One production that’s recently started to seek him out is Jaume Collet-Serra‘s Akira; Garrett Hedlund looks to be the lead, and Helena Bonham Carter is being pursued as well.
Deadline says that Warner Bros. is indeed going after him for the remake, and they’re also trying to get the actor for Arthur & Lancelot, David Dobkin‘s reimagining of the King Arthur tale. Joel Kinnaman has already been cast as Lancelot, and an actor is being tested for King Arthur at the moment. Recent animated family features transported audiences to the red planet, where Martians needed our mothers, and to the unusually suburban Planet 51. For the Weinstein Company.s next adventure, we.re apparently venturing to the fictional planet of Baab, where Brendan Fraser is worshipped as an intergalactic hero and Rob Corddry is the real brains behind the operation. Fraser and Corddry are joining Sarah Jessica Parker, Jessica Alba, James Gandolfini and Craig Robinson as the vocal talents in the 3D animated comedy Escape from Planet Earth, according to a release sent out by the studio. Callan Brunker, storyboard artist on Despicable Me and the underrated Horton Hears a Who!, is graduating to the director.s chair where he.ll tell the story of admired astronaut Scorch Supernova (Fraser) who embarks on a dangerous mission and is compromised, forcing his nerdy sibling, Gary (Corddry), to step up and be the hero.

Though it seems like alien-based animated films like Planet 51 and Mars Needs Moms don't seem to strike the same quality chord as other animated films, The Weinstein Company and Rainmaker Entertainment are throwing their hat in the same ring as Escape from Planet Earth. Today it was revealed that Brendan Fraser, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jessica Alba, Rob Corddry, James Gandolfini & Craig Robinson comprise the voice cast of the 3D animated comedy which is already in production. In addition, we have the first photo of our hero aliens on the run with a whole slew of humans hot on their tail. See the photo below! Here's the first look at Escape from Planet Earth: The film takes place on planet Baab where admired astronaut Scorch Supernova (Fraser) is a national hero to the blue alien population. I could’ve sworn this was some sort of sequel to 2009′s “Planet 51″. The aliens look pretty much the same and when I looked it up, well, it’s not I think. But nevertheless, another family aimed animated alien film is coming to theaters and as with any kiddie flick in this day and age, it’s sure to make tons of moolah at the box office. And is it just me, or do the guys chasing the aliens look like the same characters from “Monster’s Inc.”? Anyhoo, The Weinstein Company has announced the voice cast for “Escape From Planet Earth” which includes Brendan Fraser, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jessica Alba, Rob Corddry, James Gandolfini and Craig Robinson. The 3D film is already in production. “Escape From Planet Earth” is directed by Cal Brunker, best known for his work on the animated feature films “Despicable Me”, “9″ and “Horton Hears A Who!

On September 27, Lionsgate will release the 2007 movie American Loser—a film that stars Seann William Scott (Planet 51) as an ex-alcoholic New Yorker who suffers from self-induced attention-deficit disorder, dyslexia, Tourette’s syndrome and balance impairment–on DVD for a list price of $26.98.
Oh, and it’s being promoted as a comedy!
Seann William Scott attempts to hold it together in American Loser.
American Loser follows Jeff (Scott)—who blames his problems on his wealthy parents—after being evicted from the garage he rents through his hook-up with Lynn (Gretchen Mol, Tenure), the possibly gold-digging blonde who may just be the person to help Jeff pull it together.

Battle: Los Angeles invaded the top spot with the second-biggest start of the year behind Rango, while Red Riding Hood lacked bite and Mars Needs Moms was a massive flop. All three movies generally played out according to what their respective genres prescribed. Overall business was down 12 percent from the same weekend last year, when Alice in Wonderland's reign continued. Battle: Los Angeles raked in an estimated $36 million on approximately 4,700 screens at 3,417 locations, boasting initial attendance that was a bit less than Black Hawk Down and Starship Troopers but slightly ahead of The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008). Its gross, though, was much greater than the entire run of the last Los Angeles-set, alien invasion movie Skyline, but that picture's abject failure was an aberration of the sub-genre, not the norm. Battle's start also trailed District 9's $37.4 million and Cloverfield's $40.1 million, and it, of course, didn't hold a...

All three movies generally played out according to what their respective genres prescribed. Overall business was down again from last year, when Alice in Wonderland's reign continued. Battle: Los Angeles raked in an estimated $13.5 million on approximately 4,700 screens at 3,417 locations, boasting initial attendance comparable to Black Hawk Down. Its first day gross was greater than the entire opening weekend of the last Los Angeles-set, alien invasion movie Skyline, though that picture's abject failure was an aberration of the sub-genre, not the norm. Subject: Gary Oldman, 52-year old English actor and director
Date of Assessment: March 9, 2011
Positive Buzzwords: Versatile, accents, The Brit Pack
Negative Buzzwords: The Academy
The Case: There's much to be said about an actor with both loads of talent and a good head on his shoulders (instead of the usual "rammed up the arse" fare). In the rare instance of encountering such a subject, I find very little advice to offer except to suggest more of the same. Such is the case with this week's chap, Gary Oldman, who just might be too bloody adept for his own good; and while it doesn't do much in terms of page hits for me to concede to that point up front, Gary Oldman has it all wrapped up with precious little room for improvement.
Consider This: Before Christian Bale was losing excessive amounts of weight for roles, Gary Oldman was already doing it as Sid Vicious.

Rats off to ya, “Gnomeo And Juliet.” After two weeks in release, the ‘toon has vaulted into first place, generating $14 million this weekend on its way to a 3D-boosted $100 million+ gross. The Disney Touchstone release, populated almost entirely by British actors, is something of a surprise hit, since it looked like a throwaway purchase along the lines of “Planet 51” or “Hoodwinked.” Consider this something of an anomaly: who knew animated lawn gnomes would generate such business? “Hall Pass” looked like more of a dump for New Line, as the label is slowly being phased out by parent…...

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.
Sometimes, an alien teen has to learn to make his way on Earth. Other times, they have very human problems while still on their home planet. Whether he wants to just fit in or she wants to see the world, alien teens are just like the terrestrial variety. This weekend’s I Am Number Four tries to show us, once again, just how hard it can be to be an alien teen. You have to get good grades in school and run away from a killer trying to track you down. Below are some of my favorites.
7. Lem from Planet 51 (2009)
Recap: Lem (voiced by Justin Long) is just a geeky alien teen trying to get noticed by the girl next door, Neera (voiced by Jessica Biel).Until the day that a strange alien from Earth (voiced by Dwayne Johnson) lands in...

After box office receipts were down nearly 29 percent in January, the big question is whether the month of February can reverse this startling downward trend. With an Adam Sandler romantic comedy, the big-screen debut of pop sensation Justin Bieber, a sci-fi action movie set in high school and the latest Farrelly Bros. comedy, it's unlikely that February will fare as poorly as January. With no major holdovers, though, it's going to be tough to reach February 2010's $754.7 million, much less February 2009's record-setting $769.3 million. Feb. 4 While February as a whole doesn't look too bad, the first weekend should continue January's negative trend. The movie with the most hype is easily Sanctum, which has executive producer James Cameron hitting the press circuit as aggressively as he did for Avatar's opening (he recently created a Twitter account for the sole purpose of promoting the movie). Besides the its 3D presentation and Cameron's association,...

A new poster has arrived online for 51 and it’s – well, it’s fantastic actually.
The poster (via IMPAwards) – which bears the subtitle “Welcome to the Future” – proves that less is indeed more with its depiction of a three fingered hand pressing against a large “51″ shaped window.
Not to be confused with the critically derided Planet 51 or Oren Peli’s upcomig Area 51, 51 is an indie horror movie being shepherded into a limited release by After Dark Originals. Starring Tron’s Bruce Boxleitner and directed by Jason Connery, After Dark Original’s 51 sees two well known reporters granted limited access to the the country’s most secretive military base. Soon at odds with a ‘long-term visitor’ looking to escape, you can expect a terrifying (or, if the poster is anything to go by, at least eerie) assault on the senses as Alien meets 2008′s Quarantine.

If you’ve been possessed of a burning desire to behold Jack Black’s belly flab in 3D, then I am delighted to announce that your moment has arrived. What’s that? You say it’s Black’s buttcrack you crave the sight of, rendered in three glorious dimensions? This, my friend, is your lucky day. Oh, but the daring of this updating of Jonathan Swift’s classic tale of rollicking adventure and biting cultural satire must be acknowledged! Black’s (Year One, Tropic Thunder) Lemuel Gulliver is a character unlike any we’ve ever seen on film before (and unlike any that Swift himself would have had the nerve to imagine): he’s a 40something layabout who happily toils, unambitiously and minimally, in the mailroom of the (fictional) New York Tribune and plays Guitar Hero more than he delivers the interoffice memos. He dreams of romancing travel editor...

It’s tempting to copy and paste a review from a film critic I admire, after all in this modern day adaptation of Jonathan Swift’s Guilliver’s Travels, it’s an act of plagiarism that is the catalyst for Gulliver’s troubles. He finds himself on assignment in Lilliput, a land of 6-inch humans speaking in British accents. For this to be a true modern day adaptation, with the satirical objectives of Jonathan Swift’s original, Gulliver would have to find himself transported to a modern day mini-Middle East. So dangerous a mix, a producer with that pair of balls (and perhaps stupidity) might as well hire Mel Gibson to play Gulliver, but this isn’t atomic Swiftian satire so much as a fun family-friendly 3D comedy.

DreamWorks' flick is the top new entry but doesn't exactly fly and Gareth Edwards' Mexico-set indie can't fulfil its own hype
The faltering start
Opening on 470 screens, more than twice as wide as any other new entry, Megamind was always going to be the weekend's top new entry. But takings of £2.83m, including £903,000 in previews, hardly represents a flying start for the latest effort from DreamWorks Animation.
Back in April, DreamWorks' How To Train Your Dragon began its run with £4.85m including previews of £2.12m, but at the time this was seen as a relatively weak start due to the challenge of competing for 3D screens with fellow new release Clash of the Titans. Dragon ended up with £17.34m. Monsters Vs Aliens debuted a year earlier with £4.35m including previews of £1.72m, on its way to a cume of £21.35m.

If you market them well enough (hint: firebomb children's shows) and have a decent release date, really any CG-toon can bring in the business. It doesn't help if your premise is obscured by ads ("Legend of the Guardians," "Planet 51") but as long as you have a clear concept that makes sense for kids craving a simple A-to-b experience, expect undiscerning crowds to lap it up. "Megamind" looks to be holding onto the top spot for the second weekend in a row, with a respectable hold that suggests a hefty final take. This might not be a "How To Train…...

Directed by newcomer Fernando Cortizo, O Apóstolo is unlike previous films in the genre since it's one of the first animated films in Spain in which the target audience is for mature audiences. The story and the mood are closely inspired by the likes of Tim Burton's “The Corpse Bride”, though here,...

After appearing in family movies like Planet 51 and Tooth Fairy, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is jumping back into action (movies). With Fast Five opening next year, Johnson's first foray into action is Faster, which sees him as a man released from prison and seeking revenge on the men that killed his brother. The script, written by screenwriting brothers Joe and Tony Gayton, was one that Johnson hand-picked for his action movie renaissance.
"We heard that he didn't just like the script, but that he loved it," Tony told ComingSoon. "He got it... he got the 70's sort of vibe. Once we heard his passion for it, we were just thrilled. I think some actors would be nervous playing a part like this because there's not a lot of dialogue. He never asked for more dialogue. The studio asked for it a few times, but Dwayne never asked. Cologne, Germany -- "The Illusionist," Sylvain Chomet's Jacques Tati-inspired tale of aging stage performer and a young girl; the Spanish sci-fi spoof "Planet 51" and "Sammy's Adventures: The Secret Passage," a Belgian cartoon shot in 3D, are the official nominees for in the animated feature film category of the 2010 European Film Awards.
The 2,300 members of the European Film Academy will vote for the winner, which will be announced at the 2010 European Film Awards Dec. 4 in Tallinn, Estonia.
The three features illustrate both the artistic range of current Euro animation and funding strategies for financing full-length cartoons. "Planet 51," which was produced by Spain's Ilion Animation and Britain's HandMade Films, is, with a budget of around $70 million, by far the most expensive of the nominees and the most deliberately mainstream.
A twist on the 50s-style aliens invade earth story, "Planet 51" features a clueless astronaut landing on an alien planet.
