Every now and then, martial arts movies go, er, a 'little leftfield', Here are some examples...
There are few feelings I enjoy as much as watching a movie that shakes me out of my complacency, wakes me up from my jaded quasi-slumber and makes me go “I’ve not seen that before!” I watch way too many films and it can take a lot to genuinely shock or surprise me, but there are few genres that manage it as often as martial arts.
Now, I appreciate there’s a lot of base level ‘weirdness’ to the genre if you’re not used to it. There’s curious dubbing, an emphasis on physicality over plotting, some eastern cultural touchpoints that baffle unfamiliar western audiences… but fans get used to all that. I’m talking about something slightly different.
To clarify, it might seem strange to new viewers when...

Until you start watching killer rat movies, you don’t realize how few killer rat movies there are. It’s not a sub-genre that sparked off franchises (does Willard and its sequel Ben count? Let me know) or inspired Funko toys, but rather has films strewn here and there throughout horror history. Today we’re scurrying back to my particular turf for Deadly Eyes (1982), Golden Harvest’s Canadian-lensed attempt to move over from Kung Fu to Rodent Fu. (Sorry Joe Bob Briggs, I couldn’t resist.)
Released in October by Golden Harvest (the Honk Kong based studio with nearly 300 production credits) in Canada and stateside by Warner Brothers the following April, Deadly Eyes (aka Night Eyes) laid droppings all over the place according to critics and audiences alike, and was quickly relegated to clamshell heaven. Was it a film ahead of its time? God no. But Deadly Eyes is way more fun than I remembered,...

For the first time since the death of his sister, Zach (Martin) returns to his childhood home to get it ready for sale. While there, he uncovers an old toy phone he once used to “talk” to his dead sister. Years of counseling convinced him it was all in his head until an unexpected call comes through the plastic phone, setting off a series of terrifying events, and making him question what, and who, is real.

William Shatner is boldly going where only so many actors have gone before: Variety reports the Star Trek stalwart has just boarded an indie rom-com called Senior Moment. In what sounds like an homage to both Top Gun and Space Cowboys, Shatner will play a retired Navy pilot who also happened to test aircraft for Nasa. But retirement can’t clip this maverick’s wings, as he zips around town in a little hot rod (hang on, we’re not at the rom-com part yet.) The film’s being directed by Giorgio Serafini, the helmer of such, um, lighthearted fare as Game Of Death starring Wesley Snipes and the forthcoming The Executioners. We assume there’s a meet-cute nestled somewhere in all that bloody revenge, making Serafini very much the right guy to direct a movie about a twilight-years romance.

Cage Rage! Nic Cage Is Back In Rage, Coming To Blu-ray & DVD On August 12th From Image Entertainment
I do love Nic Cage, in most of what he has appeared in. My devotion doesn’t rival that of Jesse Bartel, who holds a Phd in Cagerey, but I’ve followed and enjoyed his career. So, I do look forward to seeing a new Nic Cage movie, even if I know it could be potentially bad. After a glance at the trailer, it actually looks pretty good. I’m excited to watch it now. Wesley Snipes is back, guys! And he’s more than ready to fight against a gang of zombies! Yeah, that’s exactly the thing with the upcoming horror-western titled Gallowwalkers, which comes from director Andrew Goth, and centers on a cursed gunman, played by Snipes, whose victims return as zombies warriors. Sounds promising?
Andrew Goth directed the movie from a script he co-wrote with Joanne Reay, which centers on a cursed gunman named Aman who incurs the wrath of undead warriors after he kills the gang that murdered his lover.
Or, if you prefer the official synopsis:
The movie tells the story of a mysterious gunman, Aman, the son of a nun, who breaks her covenant with God to ensure his survival. Her break with God curses her son to be hunted by all those who die by his hand. When he takes revenge on a gang that murdered his love,...

For years the most interesting role Wesley Snipes has played has not been onscreen, but in his ongoing legal problems, which started in 2006 when he was charged with tax fraud. After years of fighting the charge-- and at one point trying to claim he was a non-resident alien of the U.S.-- Snipes was sentenced to a three-year prison term, and has been cooling his heels at the McKean Federal Correction Institution ever since. But on July 19 this year, Snipes gets released, and he plans to waste no time in getting back to the acting career that last included 2010's Game of Death. At this year's European Film Market in Berlin, Snipes will be the central selling point of Gallowwalkers, a film project being shopped by Vmi Worldwide. The film actually went into production right when Snipes was charged with tax fraud, way back in 2006, and it's hard to...

Previously only an unsourced rumor, this time around, the news about Kristen Stewart-Cali comes from Variety’s Jeff Sneider, who describes Cali as a "gritty action pic" set in Los Angeles. Voltage Productions and New School Media will handle the independently made film. Diliberti’s screenplay tells the story of a young San Fernando Valley couple, Mya (Stewart) and Chris, who enjoy living dangerously. They sell a fake snuff film (explicit mix or sex and murder) and leave town, but Mya has to return to Los Angeles to rescue her younger sister and deal with "angry former business partners, homicidal porn stars, stoner vet techs, an unstoppable killing machine in a cowboy hat and their own contentious relationship.

Another new image has appeared online for the new flick Raze, which we've been giving lots of love to around here. How could we not?!? Zoe Bell and Rachel Nichols fighting to the death? Magnifique! *kisses fingers*
Bell (Kill Bill, Game of Death, Grindhouse, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters) and Nichols (Star Trek, P2, The Amityville Horror) co-star in Josh C. Waller's Raze.
Whereas originally it looked like Raze would be a web series, producer Robert Beaucage tells us, "With all the buzz about Raze, and interested distributors contacting us from all over the world, Raze is now being made as a feature film for theatrical release. Ancillaries, such as web content, graphic novels, sequels, etc., will also be forthcoming, but for now we're concentrating on the full-length feature."

Joel Courtney made his acting debut in J.J. Abrams' Super 8, and is now in negotiations for two independent films, Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn and The Healer. He really did a wonderful job in the lead role opposite Elle Fanning in the Super 8 so I am interested in seeing how far his range can go.
Variety reports, that Jo Kastner is writing and directing the adaptation of Mark Twain's classic story, in which Courtney is set to play Tom Sawyer, "a mischievous troublemaker in search of endless adventures in 1850s Missouri." The film will be produced by Kastner and Marcus Weinhart, which is scheduled to shoot this August in Bulgaria. That makes no sense for something that is supposed to take place in my home state of Missouri!?

It's great to hear that one of the lead youngsters from J.J. Abrams' Super 8, 15-year-old Joel Courtney (who we interviewed), has started moving along in his acting career. Variety is reporting that Courtney has "entered negotiations" to join the cast of two independent movies, the first an adaptation of Mark Twain's classic adventures of Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn, the other a supernatural adventure called The Healer, from writer/director Giorgio Serafini (Game of Death). Jo Kastner is writing and directing the Sawyer/Finn film, in which Joel will play Tom Sawyer. That one will start shooting this August in Bulgaria. Before we get back to Mark Twain, in The Healer, Joel would be playing a "rebellious youth who has grown up resenting his father." The story follows an ailing father who takes his two teenage kids into the woods to renew the bond they shared before a divorce,...

Warner Home Video is delivering Sylvester Stallone movies Assassins, Cobra, Demolition Man and The Specialist in high-definition Blu-ray on Aug. 16. And good ole Sly is his usual bad ass self in each one.
The oldest of the films, 1986’s Cobra stars Stallone as a lock-and-load city cop on the trail of a serial killer. Stallone’s ex-wife Brigitte Nielsen (Beverly Hills Cop II) also is in the cast.
Stallone also plays a cop in 1993’s Demolition Man, albeit a cop in the future. Cryogenically frozen for a crime he didn’t commit (sentenced to become a popsicle was better than the death penalty in 1996, apparenlty), Stallone is thawed out in the future to take down his old enemy (Wesley Snipes, Game of Death). A convicted killer from the 1990s, Snipes also was frozen but is revived for parole and stars a murderous rampage in the future crime-free society. As they battle,...

Game of Death is a movie with no game and only some death. I can only imagine that the filmmakers named it Game of Death because it is a generic name for an equally generic action movie. I forgot about this movie about five minutes after finishing it, and I have not thought about it since. Still, I know that there are probably some people out there who saw this on Netflix or Blockbuster (if there is one left in your neighborhood) and wonder if this is a return to awesome fighting movies for Wesley Snipes. Sadly, the answer is no.
In Game of Death, secret ops Agent Marcus (Wesley Snipes) is undercover as the bodyguard for an arms dealer named Smith (Robert Davi). His mission is put into jeopardy when his fellow agents decide to take matters into their own hands and take off with the millions from the arms deal.

So even though Wesley Snipes is in prison, his fans need not worry, because he’s still releasing movies, in this case Game of Death, with the lovely Zoe Bell and the always awesome Gary Daniels. Unfortunately, even though Game of Death has the lovely Zoe Bell, the always awesome Gary Daniels and the in prison Wesley Snipes – it’s not actually that good. Well, not as good as it should be anyway. The film follows Wesley, Gazza and Bell as three CIA hitmen who like walking slowly to music and shooting people from outdoor staircases – you know, the usual CIA bullshit. Anyway, they’ve got a new job, one which involves Snipes pretending to be a very bad man’s bodyguard, with the aim being to eventually kill him or arrest him or something. However, Gary Daniels and Zoe Bell - **Spoiler Alert** betray him **End Of Spoiler Alert...

Bloody Disgusting are reporting that the producers of Paranormal Activity, Jason Blum and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, have snapped up the English language rights to Thai horror flick 13: Game of Death. Adapted by writer Eakasit Thairaat from his original comic book the film is the story of:
…mild-mannered salesman Chit, who after losing his car, his job and his self-respect, is offered the chance of winning 100 million baht after he recieves a mysterious phone call from an internet game show. The game? Complete 13 challenges without reveaing his participation in the game, after each challenge he will receive a cash payment direct into his bank account. Skeptical at first, Chit completes the first two challenges – kill a fly then eat the fly. Finding the money has been deposited into his account he proceeds onto the next challenges unaware of where the game will take him, both physically and morally.

Game of Death
Directed by: Giorgio Serafini
Cast: Wesley Snipes, Zoe Bell, Robert Davi
Running Time: 1 hr 28 mins
Rating: R
Due Out: February 15, 2011
Plot: A CIA operative (Snipes) must fight for his life when his team (Bell) turns on him in the middle of a high-stakes bodyguard mission.
Who’S It For?: There are some action fans who think a movie can be fulfilling as long as its combat scenes are a even just a bit fun to watch. Game of Death is for them. Rent it for the Snipes, keep in the DVD player for the neck snapping.
Movie:
Wesley Snipes has more finesse breaking necks in Game of Death than any other element of this clunky straight-to-dvd actioner. Still, with all of its faults and general insignificance, Game of Death is certainly not one of the lesser movies of its format. The silenced pistol gunplay...

Game Of Death
Stars: Wesley Snipes, Zoe Bell, Robert Davi, Gary Daniels | Written by Jim Agnew & Megan Brown | Directed by Giorgio Serafini
What happened to Wesley Snipes? Once one of the biggest action stars in Hollywood and heading up the hugely popular Blade movies, it seems his star was extinguished the day he was arrested for tax fraud and Snipes now has to work his way back into the graces of one of the most infamously cutthroat industries on the planet.
Which is why Game of Death happened. The film sees CIA assassin Marcus (Snipes) sent opn a mission to take out an arms dealer (Robert Davi as the lazily named Smith) only to have his back up (among them Zoe Bell of Death Proof fame) turn on him.
You’d think with such a generic actioner plot that the filmmakers were simply looking for a script they could hang...

On the 10th December 2010, prison inmate No. 43355-018, aka Wesley Snipes, reported to a Pennsylvanian prison to begin a three-year incarceration for tax evasion. However, before Snipes started his ‘bird’ – one which many feel has been totally blown out of proportion because of his celebrity status – he managed to squeeze in one quick release – enter Game of Death. In it, Snipes plays Secret Ops employee agent Marcus, a hitman sent to take out an arms dealer and the mutual fund that is financing him. However, two of his fellow CIA operatives have other plans, and Marcus eventually becomes locked in a deadly game of cat and mouse with his former associates and their now corrupt CIA operation.
The premise of the film is this – Agent Marcus (Snipes) is a loyal, cold-blooded hitman for the CIA who has spent his life taking orders and killing as instructed. However, what sets him...

First… Game Of Death, starring Wesley Snipes. First profiled on this blog October (2009). At the time, Abel Ferrara was to direct it, but Giorgio Serafini actually ended up behind the camera.
Needless to say, it’s a straight-to-dvd release (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing). And it’s out as of today on both DVD (Here) and Blu-ray (Here)!
The film the tells that tale of a hospitalized politician’s bodyguard who discovers the truth behind his mission, as he tries to stop the world’s top five assassins from killing his boss.
Poster to the left, trailer below.
And second… Unstoppable, starring Denzel Washington. This one should be much more familiar to all of you for obvious reasons. It seems like it was just yesterday that it opened in theaters. How time flies, especially as the window between theatrical and DVD releases has shortened.
I skipped it, but...

Release of the week goes to the new Twilight Zone: Season 3 Blu-ray. Cleaned up, crisp and featuring all 37 episodes and a ton of features, Twilight Zone fans couldn't ask for more. Season three also features a few of my personal favourite episodes including the post-apocalyptic "Two" with Charles Bronson, "The Shelter" which I'm sure you've seen parodied on The Simpsons. Seasons 1 and 2 are also out on blu-ray.
There's a new Wesley Snipes actioner out this week called Game of Death. Haven't seen it, but I hear its got a crap load of gun heavy action and Zoe Bell kicking serious ass. If you're a fan of hard boiled 90s actioners about CIA agents directed by dudes who wanted to be John Woo you'll probably like this. If you're not, you won't.
Also out this week is The Last Lovecraft: Relic of Cthulhu about a down on his luck office...

Game of Death (out this week from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment) is a fairly run-of-the-mill straight-to-dvd action flick featuring Wesley Snipes as a CIA tough guy who's been targeted for assassination by a couple of rogue agents who want him out of the picture so they can commit an elaborate robbery. But it's not a total loss, since one of those rogue agents is played by none other than Zoe Bell, who captured the hearts of genre fans everywhere when she taught us how to do the "ship's mast" in the Death Proof segment of Grindhouse.

Wesley Snipes is Marcus, a CIA operative tasked with gaining the trust of Robert Davi’s shady arms dealer, Mr Smith so that when Mr Smith meets up with the corrupt hedge fund manager with whom Smith is working, he can take them both out. Six months later, Marcus is Smith’s head of security and they are on their way to a meeting, when the hedge fund manager will hand over $100m to Smith. Smith suffers a heart-attack on the way there, before the rest of Marcus’s team then intervene, having decided they would rather steal the $100m than see through the mission as originally intended. Marcus must fight off his own team, as well as wrestle with his conscience over all that he has done as a “special operative”.

This trailer has actually been in circulation for a bit, but we missed it somehow. Better late than never, right?
It’s for a film called Game Of Death, starring Wesley Snipes. We actually profiled it on this blog last October (2009), but I hadn’t heard anything of it since then. At the time, Abel Ferrara was to direct it, but the current list of crew credits says otherwise. Someone called Giorgio Serafini actually directed it.
Needless to say, it’s a straight-to-dvd release (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing). But it’s not out yet. I have no release date.
The film the tells that tale of a hospitalized politician’s bodyguard who discovers the truth behind his mission, as he tries to stop the world’s top five assassins from killing his boss. No doubt Snipes plays the bodyguard, as he gets to flex his martial arts skills once again.
