Underwhelming to the extreme!
CharlieHound3 October 2011
When I saw that Danny Dyer played a main character in this movie, I was worried that it was going to be just another of his mediocre flicks, but I was actually quite surprised. I was surprised at the fact that this was his most underwhelming role to date!

Danny Dyer has played acceptable roles as the underling to hard men in some of his previous movies, but it seems that in a few of his recent movies, he's been elevated to 'boss-man' status, and his acting inabilities are now shining through.

When I read the plot, I thought the movie had a little potential, but terminal disappointment set in after 15 minutes, and all I could do was wait impatiently for the monotonously predictable ending.

I have nothing against Danny Dyer per se, but giving him a lead role in any movie is a recipe for serious face palming.

I'm feeling generous, so I'll give it 3/10

Completely Pointless!
HottieLoves239 September 2013
Before watching a movie I always see who is in it and that usually weighs heavily on my decision to watch it or not. I'm a fan of Sean Faris and his acting in the movie is the only reason I gave the movie such a high rating - I can honestly saw this movie should have gotten a 1.

After watching it I feel like it's a pathetic attempt to remake the 2009 movie Gamer starring Gerard Butler - which wasn't a great movie but far better than this.

There are so many awful things about this movie I don't know where to star. Well, first of all, I really disliked Chelsea. Why you ask? Because the movie basically revolved around this 'beautiful' character that has virtually no personality and who we really no nothing about. In fact we don't really get to know any of the characters except the surface of Ryan.

Maybe this type of movie just isn't my thing but it felt so flat and lifeless even with all the action. The concept of the movie was OK but the dialogue between the characters and their lack of personalities was pitiful.

Mindless romp for the fans of fantasy extreme sports. Good race chases well-shot, and that's all the 3 star rating is for, Otherwise,.for all the voyeuristic cartoon, villains assembled to bet huge money on the racers, none is at all original, nor is the sappy story of our hero young Tom Cruise lool-alike Jean Paris) getting his grandpa (Seymour Cassel) and girl (Rebecca Da Costa) off skid row and back to the beach. Cassel as affable Grandpa is the best actor, stands out among the by-the-numbers heros and villains.

Splode my head now please.

I'm about 50 minutes into the movie and I can't get passed their voicing. I mean seriously, it's like they're all reading from the same script as they're going. It's pretty bad. And don't get me started on the girlfriend; she can't even speak proper English. The main character, Sean Faris, I've seen him in multiple other movies and he's done a good job, not so much great, but good job at the roles he's played. Never Back Down, awesome movie IMO, Forever Strong, same deal. But this, OMG, this is movie is completely unbearable.

It takes about 40 minutes for the movie to even take off and at that point, its halfway over with.

The only thing that's keeping me even remotely interested is the fact that I'm a slight fan of Sean Faris and I love Parkour.

Overall, movie is horrible. Horrible Effects, Horrible Voicing. Horrible Actors. Horrible Plot. Horrible Looking 'Hot Chick' etc.

Well......
hofmann-solingen5 October 2011
...I expected a really good entertaining movie, when I checked IMDb and saw a 7.2 rating.

The movie is for my opinion a b-movie. The characters are not well played. The stunts are boring...oh moment....were there stunts???

Then, the movie tried hard to get some attention with exploding heads. The idea of the movie isn't too bad, but it's just not believable what's going on there. The guy has 20 minutes left to live and is talking with his girlfriend in the car^^

The free runners also have endless power and running, fighting nearly without breathing.

I'll make it short: For me, one of the worst movies I've ever seen. If you are a free runner fan, go back to B13 movie...this was much better.

Oh dear oh dear - RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!
HairDude3 October 2011
This must be the worst movie I've ever seen - it's simply just an awful piece of crap!

Maybe if you're 12 and think Freerunning is the coolest thing ever and don't care about painfully bad acting and script and direction and special effects and....

You'll live a happier life without this insult of a movie - TRUST ME!

I gave it a single star to even things out a bit (wish I could give a negative rating)- since the participants in this horror obviously voted way way over the top at a current rating at over 8?!!!

This is a 3 star movie at best!

AVOID AVOID AVOID!

Avoid it and don't trust ratings with low number of voters
ssbljk5 October 2011
This movie is piece of s**it that I quit watching at last quarter. After I saw its IMDb rating above 7 I hoped from the first crappy minute that it will change to better. But it went from bad to worse each new second. I hate myself for being stubborn and wasting even the shortest part of my life to this film. Avoid it or you'll regret as I did.

Long story short. Don't trust to IMDb ratings until there is much more than 15 votes.

Avoid this in long circle. This is not 7-8 stars movie as some suc**rs voted. It's a piece of crap.

Awful Thing
claudio_carvalho3 February 2014
A team of Parkour practitioners is abducted by the criminal Mr. Frank (Danny Dyer) that puts remotely controlled necklaces with explosives around their necks to force them to participate in a millionaire gambling death race for their lives. The freerunner Ryan (Sean Faris) succeeds to deactivate his collar, but the evil Mr. Frank abducts his girlfriend Chelsea (Rebecca Da Costa). Now Ryan has to reach the evil mastermind to save Chelsea.

"Freerunner" is an awful thing with dreadful acting, story, screenplay, direction and camera. It is amazing how a producer can invest five million-dollars is such a garbage. As highlighted in another review, this is the worst acting ever. My vote is one (awful).

Read below, lazy.

If you're considering for even one second, watching this movie, don't. Watch the trailer, (because it's pretty good and contains pretty much every half-decent bit of parkour the movie contains), and then save yourself the vomit and don't watch the actual movie. As a traceur, (freerunner, if you must), I was told to watch this film because it was such a travesty. I was informed correctly. The way it showcases freerunning is disgusting, we are not violent thugs. That aside, it was possibly the worst movie I have ever seen, the acting, voice-overs and plot were all worse than that of those $10-budget horror flicks, that are on at 1am and are only shown at all because they have nudity in them. I'm not overly surprised that Ryan Doyle, (Finch), was eager to put his face on this, but most real freerunners would hate this film and its message as much as everyone else obviously does. you know those movies that are so bad that they are hilarious, this one is not even funny for that reason, it actually makes one want to be sick. Freerun away from this movie, you cannot get your valuable time back!

Wow!
xaimekyllia23 August 2018
I have watched alot of terrible terrible films, the kind that are so bad they actually become kind of good (zone horror channel anyone?) But this was something else. The closest thing to it is the after dark film 51! wooden acting, a lack of actual parkour skills, looks like it was filmed on 70's equipment. The soundtrack sounds like it was taken from the kind of 70's film where the guy with a mustache comes to fix the fridge (spoiler he doesn't fix the fridge). I'm normally a fan of the terrible yet kinda brilliant films of Danny Dyer but even he looked like he had based his "bad guy" on zoolander, alot of pouting and posing.

I have the feeling they were going for The Tournament with freerunning but ended up with a freerunning arterial wound that needed a tourniquet!

Awful Piece of Garbage
rott-412 October 2011
I was annoyed and bored at the beginning...the opening sequence was long and boring...then the first race happens and I almost fell asleep if it wasn't for the atrocious cinematography I would have...the shaking of the camera was the only thing that kept me awake but it also had the chance of being nauseating so I had to turn away a couple times due to it just hurting my eyes and being god awful camera work.

In the middle of the race I hear something that sounds like god awful acting...I was actually expecting a documentary movie rather than an action-less movie.

Once the terrible fight sequences started I went "ahh it's just a sh*t movie"...I watched to the end of the first race and I couldn't watch anymore after seeing all of the bad acting, writing and cliché garbage dialog.

So I stopped watching I think about 10-15 minutes in...this movie makes vomit appealing!

Worth a watch
Stokerj00713 October 2011
I Thought this movie was entertaining! There is plenty of fast paced action and will appeal to most audiences. It's quite refreshing to see free-jumping coming into films once again and although it has it's limits, i think this effort was worth the time! If Danny Dyer And Tamer Hassan had swapped roles, i think it would have been a better balanced film, but every dog must have his day, mustn't he! The action was good and solid, no Oscar winning performers, but does there have to be in a film like this? The plot was OK and i didn't see the little twist coming, so that was a thumbs up! This films warms up as it goes along, so my advice is to give it a chance and see if it surprises you in a good way, like it did me! I gave this a 6 because of the twist i didn't see coming!

theanomaloushost13 July 2020
This film is a riot! It's so ridiculous and poorly executed that you can't help but laugh at it, especially when the Battle Royale twist happens about 20-30 minutes in. Once that happens, it's pure so-bad-it's-good entertainment from that point onward.

Look out for that final boat explosion at the end, where the explosion effects eventually diminish, and you still see the boat fully intact right before the scene fade entirely happens.

Warning: Spoilers
This movie is hilarious.

Overlooking all the stupidity involved - my biggest hangup is that a crucial part of the movie involves the main character's girlfriend driving the freerunners with her car that was sold not 5 minutes earlier in the movie. Hahaha... It wouldn't have been as funny if they hadn't emphasized the part where the car is sold and the keys are turned over to the buyer.

I think the other reviews pretty much sums it up except the B-movie title is kind of undeserving... This movie is further along the alphabet, probably closer to the end.

Surprise Surprise Incredible Horrible Movie!
chrichtonsworld13 November 2011
So I am going to regret saying this. But even Uwe Boll is making better movies. Blasphemy! I know. I did say I was going to regret saying that. When watching the movie I was not really expecting much. But this being about free running I was expecting some decent stunts. If there was some free running involved I barely could make out what was happening because one of the gimmicks was the use of a shaky cam. Whose brilliant idea was that. People not knowing anything about free running must get the wrong impression about this extreme sports. As not single shot shows what free running really is. To top it of they mix in a Battle Royale game and Danny Dyer overacting like he never did before. Seriously I did give this movie a chance. But everything about it is just plain horrible.Avoid!

Watching this movie gave me a headache
greengrass-mg12 May 2012
I wanted to watch this film to see if it was really as bad as everyone had reviewed. However, I could not watch it for more than 30 minutes because the camera was never still. It was as if I was watching a home video. The scenes were very shaky and extremely zoomed in- leaving out important side information. Even during scenes filmed in a hospital, there was excessive camera movement. I would compare this film to episodes of the Power Rangers from the late 90's. Sometimes the words that the actors were saying did not match up with their lips. They attempted to intensify parkour/freerunning action shots by shaking the camera.

Stale ideas, mediocre completion
BeneCumb27 December 2012
Movies focusing on a certain martial arts or similar tend to be dull, full of clichés and predictable. Freerunner (2011) is no exception: running for life, remote destruction devices, individualism vs. teamwork, naive sportsmen vs. evil moneymakers etc have been used dozens of times before (and I am sure will be used in the future as well). The ending is also trivial, preceded by several speedily accumulative scenes, not providing any value to the movie.

Acting is mediocre or even terrible, especially the blond announcer and those billionaires annoyingly appearing on screens.

Well, the movie is for you if you are keen on parkour, inexpressive dudes and flickering cameras. For a decent free-running movie, watch Luc Besson's District 13 instead.

Trashable
saadgkhan16 August 2012
Freerunner – TRASH IT (D) A group of freerunners race for their lives after being outfitted with explosive collars, and given 90 minutes to reach the other side of town or die trying. Ryan (Sean Faris) and his fellow parkour enthusiasts are used to taking big risks, and they make big money pushing the boundaries of physical endurance. But when Mr. Frank (Danny Dyer) enters the picture, Ryan's favorite pastime turns deadly serious. Mr. Frank and his friends are gamblers with no regard for human life, and their latest bet is which of the runners can navigate their urban jungle the fastest. With ticking time bombs strapped around their necks, the runners must find their way across the city in less than 90 minutes. The winner will receive a cool $1 million, and everyone else will get a splitting headache. When Ryan learns that his girlfriend has been kidnapped as well, he quickly realizes that he's got his work cut out for him. (RT) The only good thing about freerunner is its free running in the mist of horrible acting, yelling, production and dialogues. No need to watch it at all.

Worst acting ever
alexwojtak19 July 2013
I remember Simon Amstell saying that if a film contained Danny Dyer, it was either first rate or third rate. This film really doesn't cut it as third rate. It truly is terrible.

I've watched a lot of films, and I tend to like a lot of cheap low budget horror films, so it's really going some to say that I think this is the worst acting I've ever seen. Maybe something like 'razor blade smile' coming in second. They were clearly going for parkour crossed with the running man, but failed on every count that matters as a movie (also, surely a better title would have been "The free-running man"?) The opening just looks like a computer game, but manages to handle it even worse than "house of the dead." Somehow it goes downhill from there.

Amazing
info-326816 October 2011
Why are some reviewers so amazingly dumb or amazingly devoid of a sense of humor or amazingly jealous? This is a fun, lighthearted movie showing off terrific free running. No cgi, no wires just very talented athletes demonstrating their incredible prowess. Here is a clearly small budgeted movie that raced (no pun intended) to number 12 on the IMDb rankings. It's as if many of the reviewers are being paid by a rival free running movie to throw pathetic insults at this fun movie. Some reviewers complain about British gangsters "running" a city in America. Sorry, American gangsters don't have an absolute monopoly. Another reviewer bitterly complains that Ryan's (Sean Faris) girlfriend Chelsea (Rebecca Da Costa) says that she isn't going to sell her Volvo and then in the next scene she does sell it. Wrong. She does not sell her car. Another reviewer complains that Da Costa isn't American. It isn't good enough that she speaks English with a very understandable accent, but simply that she doesn't have an American accent. Sorry to break the news that America is now a country comprising many accents and many nationalities. The fact that Ryan dares to have a non- Caucasian girlfriend seems to upsets some members of the kkk. Let's "look" at another reviewer who complains that she is prettier than this Brazilian Beauty. I suggest that reviewer goes to the You Tube video of Rebecca Da Costa Hottest Woman in Hollywood and sees what the public think. Alternatively, let's try to give credence to another reviewer who complains that the movie is ruined because Sean Faris looks too much like Tom Cruise. Then there's the reviewer who doesn't like the opening sequence because the photographer was athletic enough to shoot in the style of the photographer from The Bourne Identity, running alongside the athletes. Of course, let's not forget a reviewer who's upset that the Freerunners are never seen out of breath. Welcome to the world of movies! If you prefer a documentary then this movie is not for you. But if you want a fun movie with action and stunts that have never before been featured on the big screen then you'll enjoy this movie.

For a certain audience
Floated22 January 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Freerunner is definitely a film not for everyone and not everyone will enjoy it. The film isn't perfect but what it's set out to be, it is pretty good and does a good job at capturing freerunning. Im not much a fan of the act but I understood what it was prior to watching this film. This film is pretty violent also which I think adds to its creativity. Without it, it wouldn't be the same and I applaud the directors for going all out. Though they could have cut down on the cursing. The film gets good around less than midpoint. About the time when Danny Dyer's character is introduced as the villain (part when the freerunners get locked in a mysterious place underground then get gas poisoned). From here is when the fun begins and the plot kicks in- they all get ticking bomb collars attached to their necks waiting to explode. Sean Farris also does a good job as the lead but it's a little disappointing seeing him in less than superior films. His career doesn't look too good right now to be honest.

To enjoy the film just don't really think much about its flaws, look at the stunts they do and their intense action sequences (includes exploding heads!). Also don't take it too seriously as this film has some funny moments and lines, many of them are from Danny Dyer and the rich millionaire men who are invested in the freerunning game. Currently the film has an IMDb rating of 3.4 with 2,382+ votes (from reading other reviews from Oct 2011, users stated this film had a rating of 7+). Kind of shocking how the rating faltered that much. It should definitely be above 5. Id give it a 7 just for a certain scenes and it isn't as bad as the users made it out to be. But then again, it isn't for everyone.

Though like these films, the ending is pretty predictable. Just by reading the plot description you can basically tell who comes out alive. Though, there are some unexpected deaths and such. All in all, watch this film with a free mind. It really isn't all that bad.

Disgraceful
timwong-181-2847078 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This is probably the biggest insult to film making and parkour ever. Not only did I spend 90 minutes looking at a total disregard for human intelligence, but ruin the art of freerunning for those who are intrigued yet intimidated by the idea. Lawrence Silverstein ("Director") has taken his trust fund and already produced a handful of "films" that is clearly not yet ready for Youtube but yet has decided to make a montage of parkour clips that forces the audience to question if the cinematographer was just a crew member with nothing better to do. From the opening credits you are forced to take precautions against epilepsy, not a single sequence in this movie was ever shot on steadycam. The biggest concern comes when I realized the ENTIRE film plot was based on the 2000 Japanese film "Battle Royale", right down to the detail of explosive collars. Though, and I'm saying this ironically, the Japanese version had less relentless nudity than this piece of garbage. Never have I watch a film with such disgust and disdain that it causes me to rethink about being in the film business altogether, but if you love movies and are looking for something that will get your blood boiling, watch this movie, otherwise, please do whatever it takes to sue this movie for EVERYTHING infringement.
