"As Above, So Below" is one of the better found-footage horror films to emerge in the wake of the one-two punch that was "Cloverfield" in 2008 and "Paranormal Activity" in 2009. Where many of its peers struggled to put a fresh spin on the subgenre's tropes, the Dowdle Brothers' 2014 flick is a pulpy Indiana Jones-lite action-adventure that cleverly incorporates mythical elements like the philosopher's stone -- or, as we uncultured Yanks call it, the sorcerer's stone -- and the Nine Circles of Hell from Dante Alighieri's epic 14th-century poem "Divine Comedy." Admittedly, it doesn't go so far as to reinvent the found-footage wheel, nor does it overcome some of the format's worst tendencies. But it does breathe a little more life into that formula, especially when the action inevitably devolves into people incessantly shaking the camera as they run screaming for their lives.
Of course, the biggest weapon in the film's arsenal is its setting.

It’s a deceptively big month on Prime Video in September! To kick things off, The Wheel of Time will be back for a second season on the service, while a live-action The Boys spinoff series called Gen V will be capping off the original series content later in the month.
But there are also some interesting new projects lined up between those two biggies. On September 15, Jenna Coleman and Oliver Jackson-Cohen star in what is sure to be a delicious tale of revenge. Wilderness, based on B.E. Netflix is reshuffling its streaming offerings once again, and the latest round of movies set to leave the platform includes a few new horror classics. More specifically, if you're looking for a scary movie to watch in September, you'll have to cross Oren Peli's 2009 horror phenomenon "Paranormal Activity" off your to-watch list before then, as it's due to leave the streamer at the end of this month.
"Paranormal Activity" may not be the most enduringly scary horror touchstone of the past two decades (its slow burn scares were polarizing even upon initial release), but it's certainly among the most replicated. The shoestring-budget flick about a couple who set up security cameras to pinpoint the source of unusual happenings in their home was inescapable upon its release, earning nearly $200 million at the box office and spawning six sequels and spinoffs and counting. Along with J.J. Abrams' "Cloverfield," the film...

Spooky Season is in session on Hulu, as the streaming service is adding a ton of horror-themed content this month. But not to worry, there’s plenty of other non-spooky new movies and shows to watch, too.
In the horror realm, director David Bruckner’s new (and well-received) take on “Hellraiser” arrives on Oct. 7, while horror films ranging from “Annabelle: Creation” to “The ABCs of Death” to “Monster House” to “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” arrive throughout the month.
In decidedly non-scary new arrivals, the entire series of “Schitt’s Creek” comes to Hulu on Oct. 3 after streaming on Netflix for the last few years, while the Hulu original film “Rosaline” – which tells the “Romeo and Juliet” story from a different point of view – streams on Oct. 14.
Other noteworthy library titles include Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch” on Oct. 25 and David Cronenberg’s “Crimes of the Future” on Oct. 31.

The beautiful and iconic city of Paris, France is well-known for art, fashion and culture, but beneath the city lies the not so pretty Paris catacombs, a network of tunnels that contain the remains of more than six million people. When basement walls collapsed around the Holy Innocents’ Cemetery, the residents of the cemetery were relocated to the underground catacombs sometime around 1786, and the tunnels were opened to the public in 1809. The 2014 horror film As Above, So Below actually obtained permission from the French authorities to film in the catacombs and tells the terrifying story of an archaeologist and her team who explore the tunnels with deadly results.
Set in Paris in the late eighties, the new Belgian film Deep Fear follows a group of students who decide to celebrate their graduation with a trip to the catacombs. Written by Nicolas Tackian and directed by Grégory Beghin (Losers Revolution), Deep...

Right now, it’s understandable if you’re developing cabin fever. Many of us will be on lockdown and even if you aren’t, leaving the house isn’t a good idea at the moment. As such, streaming video is snowballing in popularity, as are video games. But if you want to widen your horizons a little, why not check out this virtual tour of the Paris Catacombs?

Created in the 18th century after the Paris cemeteries began overflowing with corpses, plans were made to reuse the city’s vast underground quarries as an ossuary. But, being French, they did it in style. What lies there now is a tangled labyrinth of super-spooky passages lined with human skulls and femurs, many of which are arranged into intricate patterns. The Berlinale continues to unveil its lineup, today announcing films selected for its Forum category: an independent section of the festival, organized by Arsenal – Institute for Film and Video Art, celebrating its 50th anniversary.
This intermeshing of old and new runs throughout the selection. The category offers challenging and thought-provoking films that bring together cinema with the visual arts, theatre and literature. Many of the 35 films in this year’s program — 28 of which are world premieres — are distinguished by how they navigate between past and present.
Included in the selection is late Chilean director Raúl Ruiz and his widow Valeria Sarmientos’ “The Tango of the Widower and Its Distorting Mirror,” which opens this year’s Forum. Ruiz, who died in 2011, shot the material in Chile in 1967, but was unable to complete it before going into exile in 1973. His widow Sarmiento has now transformed the footage into a finished film.

With a decade of monumental horror coming to an end, we pay homage to the genre's recent past by looking back at the horror releases of 2014 on a new episode of Corpse Club!
It was the year when Annabelle returned to theaters in her own movie, when the violence of the Purge spread into the city streets and moviegoers took a deadly tour of the catacombs beneath Paris. 2014 was a year of many things, and for horror fans, it was another bountiful year on both the big and small screens.

In the latest film from Hirokazu Kore-eda (director of the 2018 Palme d’Or winner “Shoplifters”), Catherine Deneuve plays a legendary French film star who has just published a memoir titled, like this movie, “The Truth.” It’s a promise that her book comes nowhere near fulfilling; as for Kore-eda’s first film made outside his native Japan, it’s a fascinating exploration of the fallibility of memory and of how the truths we tell ourselves so frequently outweigh an empirical certainty.
Deneuve’s Fabienne falls into the great screen tradition of actresses capable of great emotion on stage or screen but less so off. (Think Bette Davis’ Margo Channing in “All About Eve” or Gena Rowlands’ Myrtle Gordon in “Opening Night.”) She also shares some DNA with Ingrid Bergman’s musician in “Autumn Sonata” or Shirley MacLaine’s movie star in “Postcards From the Edge” — have we acknowledged how much...

Over the past quarter century, the Slamdance Film Festival has served as a launchpad for a number of now high profile filmmakers at the very start of their careers. Here is a baker’s dozen of some of the festival’s greatest discoveries.
Marc Forster
“Loungers”
Forster premiered his $10,000 debut in 1995 and grabbed the Audience Award, and has become one of the most versatile directors working, with other credits including “Monster’s Ball,” “Finding Neverland,” “Stay,” “The Kite Runner,” “Stranger Than Fiction,” “Quantum of Solace,” “World War Z” and “Christopher Robin.”
Rian Johnson
“Evil Demon Golfball from Hell!!!”
Johnson’s irreverent short film played the festival in 1996, launching a career that has dabbled in artistic indies and big-budget franchise blockbusters (“Star Wars: The Last Jedi”).
Greg Mottola
“The Daytrippers”
