Who asked for this?!
burkholdermicah3 January 2020
Why was this made? Why did they think it was a good idea to remake this? Why does it take the plot of the original film and throw it out the window? Why does it look like an uninspired, totally predictable, and an overall sorry excuse of a horror film?! It's 2020, people! A new decade is already here... STOP REMAKING STUFF THAT DOESN'T NEED TO BE REMADE!!

So get this: it's a remake of the film that is a remake of the Japanese Horror film: Ju-On: The Grudge (fantastic movie, BTW) and they took that and made it into one of the most predictable stupid films ever. And it's already 2020, and I thought unnecessary remakes were outlawed (they should be). I don't even see who is the target audience of this film, and I don't see who will watch this film a second time.

Weak Storyline, Bad Cinematography, and Unnecessary Jump Scares makes this film not worth your money. What a complete disaster! TERRIBLE film!!

The Curse
claudio_carvalho20 April 2020
Detective Muldoon (Andrea Riseborough) moves to a small town in Pensylvannia with her son Burke (John J. Hansen) to work in the local Police Department. She is assigned to be partner of Detective Goodman (Demián Bichir), who has recently lost his partner Detective Wilson (William Sadler) that was obsessed by a murder case. When Muldoon and Goodman find the remains of a woman in a car in a closed road, Muldoon realizes that her address was the same of the murder case Wilson was investigating. She decides to investigate the house and soon she learns that there is a curse for those who enter in the house.

"The Grudge" (2020) is a horror movie based on the vengeful spirit from the excellent "Ju-on" (2002) and the American version "The Grudge" (2004). The cinematography is uncomfortable and the viewer startles in a couple of scenes and in the end, it is a reasonable entertainment. The conclusion is predictable. My vote is five.

Awful
barryjohnjones13 December 2020
The writers behind this should hang their heads in shame. I was looking for a decent horror of 2020 and this was recommended The plot of the film goes like this... dialogue/creepy music/aaaaaagggh uuugghhhh/insert some 'horror' (not connected with anything)/repeat 15 times/end film. Rubbish.

I created an IMDb account just so that I could leave a 1 star review for this movie
rach-456935 February 2020
Dull, messy and predictable. With scenes (and characters) that serve no purpose other than to pad out what feels like an eternity of an only 97 minute long film. An awful movie in it's own right, never mind comparing it to it's predecessors.

Horror Movie Garbage to start off 2020
Yee_Reviews4 January 2020
Good: There really is not much good to say about this movie except that the acting isn't awful from Lin Shaye and John Cho.

Bad: Messy writing with convoluted plot lines with time frame switches from 2004-2006, cannot focus on one story at a time. There is barely any story and relies heavily on jump scares. There are so many bland scenes and an annoying ominous score in the background to create an atmosphere but utterly fails. There are also random cinematographic shots that provide no purpose other than to extend the runtime.

Overall: This is one of the worst horror movies I have seen in a long time that is awful and entirely unnecessary. The plot clearly sat at a desk and is now only being produced to make a profit from a low budget. The story does not add up to much or provide any additional lore and has no significant themes. No entertainment value from this!

I'd rather comb the ghost's hair for 100 minutes. It's only the 2nd day & my 2020 is already a horrible mess.

Warning: Spoilers
Here we go again... another Grudge/Ju-On/Kayako films that comes out in the month of January curse. The Kayako's curse really works on the movie, it is just awfully bad.

The trailer says it is a 'Twisted New Vision' to shift the plot into something new but somehow the director/screenwriter doesn't do his research, it's another horror movie done 100 times. The movie is also slow with no exciting details. Unnecessary dialogues further drag the movie with no developments. No interesting characters. Plot holes? Don't mention it. A lot. And the ending... oh my God. It's that another, 'Okay we did it, we defeated the ghost, only to realize later that the ghost is one step ahead of them and bam! End credits title shows up.'

However, some of the things are great. One of them is the lighting. It really feels very dark and ominous all the time. Second, the main girl who also acted in the Crocodile episode of Netflix's Black Mirror, she pulls it off excellently for a performance in a horror film. Finally, though jumpscares is a lousy technique, the final 30 minutes is full with effective ones.

Overall, it is a movie that you should watch only if you love any of the actors/crews involved in this film or if you love The Grudge series very much.

This movie makes no sense
sonorosan17 May 2020
Good photography and direction but the script makes no sense. From the beginning to the end I asked myself: why this is happening? What's going on here? I was a fan of the original one, the original story and the turn at the end made a great movie. So why this?

THE GRUDGE 1.5
Slasher_Junkie3 January 2020
I see some people here calling this a remake and I'm thinking "Where they even paying attention!?!". This movie is a sequel and takes place during the same timeline of the 2004 version and the years 2005 and 2006. Only this time the curse has been brought to the US by the first nurse that was taking care of the elderly lady from the first movie. Anyways, I have to say the editing is a mess and most of the characters are lifeless, but the actors did their best with what was given. I actually like the cast and I think Lin Shaye and Jacki Weaver are the highlights of the film. Its biggest mistake was not bringing back the iconic ghosts that fans have grown to love. This is their franchise.

2020 MOVIE #1:

THE GRUDGE (2020)

Wow is all I can say. I never thought they'd make a horror flick worse than The Grudge 2 (2006). Well I was wrong, consider me blown away for all the wrong reasons. This movie is absolute garbage. It's not even bad enough to be good it's inexcusably boring bad. What's wrong you might ask. Well the movie has a great cast and is filled with solid performances. The screenplay isn't too bad and has some interesting touches concerning the mythology and its pretty gory mostly unnecessary but still appreciated. The big problem here is the abysmal direction. Set between the first 2 American films it concerns a woman who brought the curse home with him from Japan and than ends up murdering her family which curses her house. During the film we are introduced to a group of characters who come into contact with that house and are killed one by one. Nicolas Pesce director of the acclaimed Eyes of my mother doesn't know how to execute a single scare in the entire 93 minute run time. Theres no real atmosphere. The film is clunky, sloppy and boring. And because of the amateur cut you can't really experience any engagement with the stories or the characters. What a way to start the year. I can pretty much say that I may stop watching movies if I see anything worse than this, this year. Just atrocious and embarrassing and I'm talking to you Sam Raimi for having a hand in this.

Has anyone here actually watched the original Japanese films?
dragonempress-1600614 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I'm someone who is just as tired of garbage horror movie remakes as everyone else, but the Ju-On series (the Japanese films, not the American ones) is one of my favorites, so I went to see it so that I could say that I sat through it and write an angry review later about how bad it was. It wasn't as bad as everyone says. The main issue that I see with reviews here is the comparison with the 2004 American remake. This film actually calls back more to the original direct-to-video "Ju-On: The Curse" and "Ju-On: The Grudge" than anything else, and people seem to have a lot of the same complaints with those as they do here. -Confusing, non-linear story? Check. -Slow, sometimes outright boring pace? Yep. -Schlock factor? In spades. -Grim, negative ending? Oh yeah. -Unbeatable antagonist? She's here too. But the thing is, these are hallmarks of the original movies. The first Ju-On film was made in 2000 on a half-shoestring budget and a camera that was outdated even for its time. Takashi Shimizu wrote it to be an answer to "Ringu," but with elements that scared HIM specifically. It certainly isn't everyone's cup of tea, but those who enjoy it completely unironically understand this film (the one that this review is actually about). It calls back, sometimes recreating shots, from both "The Curse" and "The Grudge," but manages to be its own film at the same time. It has a good concept: "What would happen if someone brought the Ju-On curse back to America?" And it, in my opinion, it nails this concept perfectly, bringing us characters who are completely clueless as to the nature of the evil that they're fighting against and often rendered completely helpless by their ignorance. As if anyone was ever able to effectively fight back in the first place. There are a lot of references to the origins of the Ju-On story, such as repeated usage of the number four. Four, in Japanese, sounds just like the word for "death" and is, as such, considered unlucky. One of the first times that the Ju-On spirit as we know her ever appeared was in a short film called 444-444-4444. In the 2020 film, 44 is the main protagonist's street address, people wake up at 4:44 in the morning, ect. And this trope is also inverted, using 999 as the police department's street address, a subtle nod to westerners' aversion to the number 666. A lot of the events in this film mirror the events in both "The Curse" and "The Grudge," which I thought was pretty cool to see in a modern, higher-budget setting. The scene with the Ju-On spirit hovering over the elderly lady, the character with their jaw ripped off, the infamous bed scene, and of course the murders that cement The Grudge House as the central hub for the curse in the film's location are all there, though slightly tweaked to give it the feel of both history repeating itself and a new set of circumstances playing out. I also thought that making the mother the original murderer this time was a nice touch, as you don't really see a lot of women brutally murder their children in media. I feel, though it is very predictable in some ways and sometimes comes across as almost silly, this film had a lot of affection and respect for its roots. The people who worked on it obviously loved the cheap, v-cinema drivel that was the original film. It manages, throughout everything, to have that unsettling atmosphere and the impressive camerawork that the original had, and the soundtrack was perfect. The end credits play in silence, the sound of the protagonist's final screams allowed to echo in you mind for a good minute before any music plays, and when it does show up, the song performed by Dead Sara is a wonderful thrill of noise. This film feels like a love letter to its predecessor in the same way Darren Aronofsky's "Black Swan" serenaded Satoshi Kon's "Perfect Blue." It's good fun inspired by classic fear, in a way that only the biggest nerds of the genre will truly understand. This is a film that's going to pass through theaters quietly and with horrible reviews, but will be treasured by the hardcore fans for years to come.

Not bad

Greetings from Lithuania.

While i'm not a big fan of "The Grudge" series, i kinda liked this film more then i thought i will be after seeing 4,2 score on this site - which is not a good sign to say a least to begin with. Yet after finishing it, i can say that "The Grudge" is a very moody picture - its a almost always dark in there, and i doesn't show you many scary moments like i some other horror movies, yet its a very creepy movie. Performances were OK for this movie, as well character - and there much more of them that i thought it will be.

Overall, i did enjoy "The Grudge". Its a very creepy horror movie that kinda sneaks on you.

Begrudged

This played out like a soft reboot, similar to Rings (sequel from The Ring, which ignored The Ring Two). It clearly exists in the same universe as the previous three American releases, but with time between them and other characters into the mix (plus new audiences watching), it kind of throws elements at you that the previous films had. Therein lies the problem.

Although this may be the slightly superior film to Rings, it also was a less necessary sequel. When you look back at what you saw, you ask yourself how the pitch meeting went to green-lighting this installment. I mean, what was the lure that got them to say this was worthy? Rings happened to evolve and modernize its story in a very sensical manner, but The Grudge didn't really breathe new life... and when it tried to, it fell a little flat on its face.

I don't know how much money was thrown at this, but it felt a little too produced. A lot of it had to do with the fact that it was brought to the States. I know that little Asian ghost girl horror was so two decades ago, but having that traditional Japanese setting that stemmed from the Ju-On series (shot on a taller frame and on film) gave the previous movies a bit of a rawer, grittier chill factor that this one loses. Not to mention the way they edit the jump scares this time around is Rings-cheesy. They are by far the worst parts of the movie, sadly enough. Props for the R-rating and I think that was excellently used, but I don't think the tone matched the maturer audience that was watching it... as it still had a PG-13 feel to the scares.

The thing that I liked most about this movie though was the nonlinear storytelling. They borrowed this from The Grudge 2, although that was kind of a twist in that film that you were jumping different timelines. I liked it so much from that one that you really had to work hard in what you were watching, and all it had to take from this movie was removing the big white lettering telling the year that it was in on shots. The timelessness feel kind of became a theme to the movie, and I think if they made the audience work a little harder at it then it would have a nice full circle feeling to it. But alas, you are always reminded where you are at in the film, so it's not quite as fun. Nevertheless, it was a cool ride to flash back and forward, though it was all exposition vomit anyway. I could have allowed them to stretch the film another 15-20 minutes for more present day substance if they could have found a way to fill it, but for what it did I'd say it was okay.

The movie whimpers out at the end for me though, and that was really where I wish it had something else to say about the franchise's evolution when it plainly couldn't. I think that's where it hits its weakest stride. I can imagine sequels to this happening, but they just won't be as fun or freaky unless they return to Tokyo again and have Kayako and Toshio again, throwing less money at it and making it raw and gritty if they're able to. This is a skipper, even for die-hard Grudgies.

One last note: This movie has the intentionally funniest scene transition since Napoleon Dynamite's "It's a sledgehammer" moment. That alone was actually worth the price of admission.

Why was this movie made?
meancandace3 January 2020
Typically sequels are done because the audience will support it. And reboots because something can be improved. This movie offered NOTHING new, not in terms of story or of innovation. The acting was mediocre, like they knew this movie was going to be a flop. I'm baffled as to why John Cho accepted this role because he's better than this. Another thing that was really annoying was the timeline clashing with props. 2004-2006 timeline, with TVs and Cars from The early 1980s. This made no sense. It was a mess. Don't waste your money.

Total waste of time
winnie_husky1 September 2020
Boring movie and probably has the worst jump scares that wouldn't scare you at all. The plot is scattered and unorganized. It's more like just copying the idea of that successful Japanese Ju-On movie and turned it into a trashy tasteless version.

What the hell have I just watched?
sloth31105 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Well that was a huge disappointment. The Grudge 2020 remake is about as scary as watching an episode of the Teletubbies. The jump scares are non existent, the story has been taken from the original Ju'On films, tossed in a blender and the resulting sludge has been smeared onto a tape and released for the public to sit and endure painfully. If anyone is thinking of going to see this film, don't. You will get more of a thrill from trying to narrowly miss slicing your finger on a chopping board or purposefully slamming a staple into your leg.

I know basing this review from my experiences with the original isn't really a fair way to go but, the original films (and the 2004 remake) gave tension for the curse by basing around a creepy pale child and his cat being the harbingers of the curse which is acted out through his mother both of whom were killed by the violent rage induced husband.

This film however gives us a slightly damp six year old Melanie Landers, who has a nosebleed and vomits water, a pointless stalking father Sam Landers, who's best scene was when he died from a blow to the head by his possessed wife, and the victim and cause of the grudge Fiona Landers.

The gore and overall scares were over in a matter of seconds. The trailer overhauled this film which lately has been the trouble with alot of the latest releases.

Don't watch this film

Not THAT bad
kiraislost12 March 2020
Holy crap, people love jumping on a bandwagon to absolutely drag a movie. I especially doubt many of you actually enjoying the horror genre. What you were expecting from a nearly twenty year old franchise? I'm seriously surprised they haven't gone to space with Ju-on. Honestly, this one isn't as bad as the cool kids will lead you to believe. It honestly tells a really nice ghost story with some pretty credible folks infront and behind the camera.

martinezantonio-579385 January 2020
The Grudge was an okay movie with more comedy than scares. It had a few good scenes of suspense and gore, the timelines were confusing at times, but if you really pay attention you'll get the understanding of it. The original is definitely better, but this one is definitely not as bad as everyone says it is.

Seriously boring
tryfanllwydjones22 February 2023
Formulaic and tedious. The first movie was ok, but the others are about as scary as Scooby Doo! Horror movies need to play with your mind. Jump scares went out of date with the man popping out of the boat in Jaws. We expect them. Get us thinking about our perceptions of reality, of life and death. I don't believe in the paranormal. We may die and get recycled in some way, but I don't think we hang around trying to scare people. The night is the day without light. Nothing more, nothing less. Give us something to be scared of. Give us a story. Come on Hollywood. Wake up and give us something new!!!

More for those who like films like Paranormal activity
kirksam30 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I am gonna keep it short for the sake of it

This film is more like a possession style movie with people doing things or killing others or even themselves while being possed by the grudge, I have no problems with that as it serves the scares and setting well the main problem is that we barely see the Grudge girl herself.

We may get a hand here or her face there in some scenes but otherwise its just people dying and coming back like a agressive zombie, only getting the iconic sounds the movies are known for from those people in question. I'd give it a higher rating if this movie was not a reboot of the american series of films but as it is based on them I just can't as it doesn't do enough to justify it being a reboot.

feel free to disagree but thats my take from watching it.

flat
SnoopyStyle18 March 2020
The movie follows events in 2004 to 2006 in a small Pennsylvanian town. Nurse Fiona Landers brings the spirit from Japan to America. There are police detectives Muldoon (Andrea Riseborough), Goodman (Demián Bichir), and Wilson (William Sadler). Peter (John Cho) and Nina Spencer (Betty Gilpin) are a married real estate agent couple. Lorna Moody (Jacki Weaver) arrives to assist the struggling Mathesons (Lin Shaye, Frankie Faison).

Nobody cares that this ties in with the rest of the Grudge franchise other than the Japanese house. So the start is the only truly interesting part and then it slowly grinds to a halt. The scrambled timeline and the multiple interconnected stories somehow saps the tension out of the movie. The excellent cast has no chance. The jump scares aren't scary. It's all very flat.
