So much effort
23 December 2022
Everyone involved in this movie tried so hard. All the choreography, singing, set dressing, special effects, casting, acting (with the exception of Reynolds who seems to have figured this movie was a mistake and phones his performance in).... so much effort to produce such a bad movie. It probably could have been good but it isn't., it is more cringe than anything and seems to sum up the state of film making in 2020.

I suspect somewhere in the development cycle of this movie, the director lost control to a committee from Apple, just look at any background scene and it becomes obvious this is correct.

If you loved Elf, do not destroy your pleasant memories by watching this movie brought to you by an Apple committee.

The Matrix: Exposition
21 September 2022
If this was a made at home fan flick, it would be a solid 4 out of 10 but it was made by the Wachowskis. How is it this bad? The meta references, the exposition, the hopeless attempts at philosophy, the exposition, the cheap and characterless replacements of Laurence Fishburne and Hugo Weaving , the exposition, the constant flashbacks to the original matrix (as in the actual scenes from the movie being shown), the hopeless attempts at injecting humour, oh and did I mention the exposition? There is a lot, explaining every little aspect of the movie in detail is the central theme of this movie. I was actually surprised when they used a motorbike without explaining how internal combustion engines work.

The only good thing was Jessica Henwick but she was under utilised and her character didn't experience a genuine arc.

If you loved the first movie and thought the next two were okay but probably should have been one movie, do not watch this, it will only damage your love of the first one.

I did not think Hollywood was capable of making a movie like this anymore.
29 May 2022
Top Gun is one of my favourite movies, so I was very nervous as I waited for Maverick to begin, I knew from long and bitter experience that Hollywood has no intention of making enjoyable movies, instead preferring to make bland generic Marvel movies or deconstruct the movies that people actually enjoyed.

My only hope with Maverick was Tom Cruise and knowing that he is not the normal actor, instead being a genuine movie star who wants to entertain his fans and produce the best movies possible.

A couple of hours later, I emerged in total shock. Maverick did almost everything right (a bit of exposition could have been cut), it paid respect to the source material, even paying respect to the character of Maverick himself. The supporting cast were all excellent and likeable. The pilots were selected because they are the best of the best period. There was no attempt to awkwardly and artificially insert a message or tick boxes, they had earned their place and were believable and likeable as a result.

Then comes the plane combat...wow. It is visceral, the practical filming shows just how intense and brutal pushing yourself to the limit is. Seeing the actors genuinely trying to remain conscious during high g turns is something that could only be achieved with them in the air experiencing it.

This is how a sequel should be made. If only Spielberg and Lucas would step aside and let a good director such as Joseph Kosinski give Indiana Jones fans the sequel they deserve, not the sequel that is about to be forced on them by directors who no longer know how to make a good movie.

Angel: First Impressions (2000)

Gunn is going to be the death of a promising series
26 March 2022
Obviously, I have come to Angel late but my partner and I have been really enjoying it... until this episode. Did the writers try to make the most annoying character ever? It reminds me of the Simpsons episode with Poochy the Wonderdog, except that character was deliberately written that way.

A practical demonstration of Hollywood's ignorance.
4 December 2021
There are plenty of 1 star reviews explaining how horrible, incompetent and plain nasty this show is, so I won't bother going into that aspect. Instead, I will point out the only interesting part of this disaster - all of Hollywood appear to be totally unable to process why people hate it.

Of course they have wheeled out their standard boogeyman, internet trolls, to explain it. They literally blame an imaginary team of trolls because they can't understand that creating a hateful Christmas show is going to be unpopular with most people. I am actually surprised they haven't blamed Russian bots yet.

Hopefully someone, somewhere in the Hollywood hierarchy has some rusty gears in their head creaking to life and realising the once again, money they have sunk into a Seth Rogen flop will never be returned to them.

Much better than I expected
9 November 2021
I started the movie expecting to turn it off because it was so bad. Instead, I watched to the end and quite enjoyed it.

It.is not a movie that requires deep intellectual thought and never aspires to be. Instead it is.a popcorn flick with good looking people searching for treasure and it delivers on this.

If you just want to spend a couple of hours enjoying something light and entertaining, this is a good option.

Magnum P.I. (2018–2024)
1/10
Inexplicable
10 September 2021
It is totally inexplicable how this was green lighted in the first place. Was there a competition amongst studio execs to see who could destroy a beloved franchise the worst? Not content with shows destroying Macguyver, the studios had to do worse. For the slow witted studio execs, a show about a detective in Hawaii is not a special idea and has no magical appeal. The secret sauce was Tom Selleck, who is Magnum. He made the show a success and is always going to own the name. Casting a random low charisma actor and slapping the name Magnum on him has zero chance of success.

Also, a 5.9 average user rating? I think some bots have been voting.

Ryan Reynolds and Samuel Jackson buddy comedy, what could go wrong?
3 July 2021
I had high hopes and then I met Samuel Jackson's character (can't be bothered remembering his name). The character is totally unlikeable, every word out of his mouth makes you dislike him more and there are a lot of words, because the scriptwriters have obviously never taken a screenwriting class.

There is no concept of show don't tell, instead, you'll get gems such as Ryan Reynolds and his ex discussing their past, Ryan Reynolds and Samuel Jackson driving for fifteen minutes and talking about their backgrounds.... oops, did I drift off for a bit?

Can't really say much beyond that, at 43 minutes, I realised this wasn't getting better, switched off while the driving scene was still going and Jackson tried making a dick joke.

Should have been better
9 January 2021
This show isn't bad, it's just very average. As a Jeff Goldblum fan I expected a clever, deep and quirky look at topics, instead I got a quirky look into topics with a bit of added quirkiness. This is not a deep dive, focussing primarily on closeups of Jeff Goldblum touching his and other people's faces. The producers don't want anything to distract from his strangeness and as a result, even that strangeness comes across as forced and contrived. It's not that the show is unwatchable, it's just so superficial it is hard to really recommend it. Watch one episode and you've watched them all.

How does a Wonder Woman set in the 80's fail?
31 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This should have been the easiest movie for a writer to write and a director to make. Everybody loves the eighties and Gal Gadot has already established herself as Wonder Woman. Yet the movie sucks.

The opening scene is fantastic, showing Wonder Woman as a child and experiencing a valuable character arc. Then it goes down hill. The Cheetah character should have been deleted from the script, it added nothing to the story and created too many cringe moments. Seeing her accosted by multitudes of evil white males as she jogs is one of the least believable scenes in recent movie history. I guarantee that in the real world she would have barely been noticed if she was really jogging through any Western City. The most interesting character was Max Lord but the Cheetah storyline stole so much screen time that we didn't see his motivation or relationship with his son developed properly. So when he sacrifices his powers at the end, it rings hollow. Now, onto the most important sin the movie commits. It is set in the eighties but somehow treats this setting cynically, rather than being a fun playground. We're not in the nineties, people don't reference the eighties cynically any more... except apparently the tone deaf director. Please, redo this movie with someone competent at the helm.

10% CGI Action 75% Talking about stuff 5% Actually funny jokes and 10% Serious cringe
28 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
We are up to number... 15?? 20?? Whatever... in Disney's desperate attempts to wring every last cent out of what at the time was a clever new take on super hero movies with Iron Man. So I shouldn't be surprised that the writers and editors are phoning it in by now but it really shows. I would suggest the writers get a copy of any of the top 100 books on screenwriting... any one at all... and read the very first lesson of any of those books, you know, the one where they say "show don't tell". I guarantee that we didn't need 80% of the movie to be exposition from the characters, especially in a superhero movie. I am sure the CGI team, you know, the people who take up most of the credits, could have fired up the Unreal Engine and pumped out a few more video game cut scenes to fill us in. But I shouldn't blame this all on the writers, the editors pretty much looked at all of the footage, every last scrap of boring exposition and said "whatever, just chuck it all in". My girlfriend actually skipped a minute of dialogue at one point and it made no difference at all. I would complain about the obvious cringe, especially during that lame scene at the end but so many of Marvel (property of the Mouse) fans probably see that cringe as a positive aspect. Whatever, it's hard to find a movie with less cringe nowadays, so it's to be expected. There were a couple of great laugh out loud jokes and fat Thor was great, not to mention the Thor/Starlord dialogue. But I can't recommend sitting through 2.5 hours of exposition and awkward CGI for the few brilliant moments. I guess you could look at it as a learning experience, Avengers showed us how a huge ensemble superhero movie could be done right and Avengers Endgame showed us how to do it poorly.

It's okay and better than I expected for a movie made in the dying days of Hollywood
20 November 2020
We have to face facts, the reason there are so many sequels and remakes of movies from the 80s and 90s is because Hollywood peaked then. The 2000's marked the beginning of the decline, which has been rapidly descending in the last few years. Despite this decline and despite the mediocre Force Awakens style influences in the script, the charm and humour... and of course the nostalgia saves this from being unwatchable, which is high praise. Zazz as the robot steals the show along with the woman from Flight of the Concordes but I mostly left feeling a little sad that this movie wasn't made in the 90s and sad that Keane Reeves may not actually be immortal.

Interesting and different
3 August 2020
I can't believe all the hate on here. Of course it wasn't the greatest movie ever made but it definitely holds my attention longer than "Iron Man 15: The Jedi Strikes Back" - both empty Disney franchises.

I wanted to like this, I really did.
11 January 2020
I really wanted to like this. I love Henry Cavill and, short of his cleft chin, he is the spitting image of Geralt. I also loved the video game adaptation, easily in my top three games of all time. So I was looking forward to this adaptation. But it is so bad. The first episode was worrying, the very first scene involved a dodgy CGI battle that was actually worse looking than the video game but bad CGI isn't enough to scare me off. But then came the talking.and then there was more talking and then came some talking. I suggest Save the Cat for the screenwriters... show don't tell guys. But let's get to the crux of the problem, the game was beautiful, legitimately beautiful, a work of love by Team Projekt Red. The movie isn't. Sure Henry Cavill is as beautiful as he always is but that's it. I got as far a Triss Merigold and switched off. Obviously Netflix haven't paid attention to the failure of Mass Effect 4, if you want to disrespect your core audience that much, don't expect them to support you.

Could have been better
6 October 2019
I wanted to like this, but it was ruined by absolutely terrible character development. For example, Sensei is evil because he is a misogynist. How do we know? He explicitly states it. There is zero subtlety in this movie and every character is one dimensional (with a not so subtle left wing message attached). I kept waiting for the clever twist at the end, but it didn't come. Everything you guessed in the first fifteen minutes is what eventually happens. If you can get past the basic screen writing class level script, this movie is okay to have on in the background while you are doing something else.

Aquaman (2018)
1/10
I thought I would like this.
17 April 2019
I thought Jason Momoa was extremely bad casting, but then I saw the preview and it looked amazing. So I went in with high hopes. Unfortunately I was right. Momoa doesn't look the part and doesn't have the acting ability to sell himself despite this. He is stiff and awkward. But it is not just Momoa. Nicole Kidman, who has previously turned in decent performances, makes no effort, even stumbling over her words at times. Tamuera Morrison does okay, but the horrible makeup and CG on him makes his parts difficult to watch. But the director has to be the worst offender... what the hell is with the CSI styles stings? and the cringeworthy hair flip as Momoa walks through steam? The one star is because I couldn't motivate myself to finish watching the movie.

Thoroughly enjoyable
8 August 2018
After suffering superhero fatigue from watching Iron Man 25, or whatever number the Marvel Iron Man remakes have reached now, I thoroughly enjoyed the more grown up Justice League. The DC Universe doesn't feel the need to crack a joke every 20 seconds like Marvel movies(10 in Thor), this makes it feel more like reading a DC comic book which often dealt with darker themes. The colour palette in the movie is brilliantly done, remiscent of the beautiful airbrushed artwork of the 80's comic books I read as a child. The criticism of the bad guy is valid, he is boring and generic, but then again, so is the bad guy in countless cape movies. The one thing I found jarring was the casting of Jason Mamoa as Aquaman, I couldn't think of many actors worse suited to the role. As I stated earlier, the movie's visuals are highly reminiscent of 80's artwork, so why you wouldn't cast an Aquaman that looked and acted like hero we grew up with is hard to understand and may negatively affect the upcoming movie. Maybe enough GOT fans will up the attendance. Anyway, ignore the critics, unless you are a fanatical Marvel movie fan you will probably enjoy this movie.

Horrible
26 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This is what happens when a greedy studio executive desperately tries to reduce a successful and beloved show to a formula. They take the elements of the original show and insert one dimensional P.C. placeholder characters, a couple of smaller characters from the original and cynically insert the pilot into the original series slot. The pilot is horrible from its awkward beginning to contrived musical end (whoops, forgot to mention spoilers). A previous reviewer cited the time Golden Girls attempted this type of stunt: I don't recall that. However, I do remember when Supernatural attempted to make us sit through a cynical money grab and it was horrible. If you like the Goldbergs DO NOT WATCH this.
