A powerful story marred by slow pacing
4 May 2024
The story is powerful as is the acting in most cases, but the pace was slow and made the film feel dragged out at times. I also think they could have used subtitles more judiciously on scenes where Ernest talks to his wife in Osage language. Nevertheless, import history to document, even though this account is surely fictionalized to a great degree. I felt DeNiro was underutilized and underplayed his role to some degree. That was also a weakness. Not a big fan of DiCaprio, but this is probably the best actual performance I've seen from him in a while. He's usually basically playing himself or a caricature thereof. This was an actual character with his accent and bearing adjusted well. The Indian actors were amazing. The sets and settings felt authentic but there were definitely some scenes that could have been shortened or shortcutted around to make the film shorter and better paced.

Bosch: Legacy: The Lady Vanishes (2023)
Season 2, Episode 1

A great new start
30 October 2023
Finally, the show we always wanted it to be is here. I can blank out the entire first season, which was weak most of the time, and just focus on this, which is the same quality as the original show. This is Titus, Welliver, and Bosch at its best. This is the kind of tension and heart pounding drama the character thrives in. Lintz has upped het game admirably, which is great to see. If they can maintain this level for this season, and then be on this will be the great a show as the original. The addition of Jerry Edgar back into this gives Welliver someone stronger to play off. And I hope even when Jamie Hector departs for his spinoff they can find someone who picks up that slack. Excellent premiere.

Good episode
25 July 2023
First of the season. Great to see so many Filipino actors being used. And I love the focus on Filipino culture and history. I hope they do more episodes of this type with more interesting storylines take it vantage of the wonderful location and place where they chose to set their story. This story represents a lot of experiences that many Filipinos have had that need to be recognized. And it pays tribute to the history between our two countries in a way that has nuance even today. This was one of the better episodes of the series. More like this please. Not a retread plot at all. I really appreciated this episode. Highly recommend it.

Cliche, cookie cutter plotting
23 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I really like the first season of the show despite the fact I didn't do enough with actual Filipino culture. I see them using more Filipino actors this season. But I still think they are unnecessarily glossing over some of the realities of Filipino life. There's a lot of poverty and a lot of struggle for Filipinos. They make it seem much more like life in the grand Caymans than life in the Philippines. But what really bothers me is that every episode this season is nothing we have never seen before. This episode was Romeo and Juliet. The only saving grace was there were some really good humor with Alex. But I'm very disappointed with the plotting so far this season. I appreciate the value of a show set in the Philippines very much and the money brings to the local culture is huge. But I hope they can come up with a more original set of plots to set there and make more use of actual local, custom and reality. Christian Kane deserves better. He's a highly compelling actor, and there are some decent supporting actors here too. But so far the writing is really letting us down season two. If it doesn't improve I'm not sure they'll be a season three.

Charming movie about aging and intergenerational conflict
23 April 2023
This one sounded silly but I rather enjoyed it. I laughed a lot. And DeNiro was spot on. Strong supporting cast. Nice to see Thurman for the first time in a while. Walken and Marin and Riddle give great support along with Seymour as the obligatory love interest. The pranks were hilarious and well done. The kids were believable. None of it to me was overplayed. It felt like the kind of thing that happens with families. I just sat back and enjoyed every minute. Not going to win any Oscars, but a really entertaining escape with no profanity and mild violence for a family, adults and kids, alike, and these days, let's face it, those are hard to find. Highly recommended.

The sitcom dream sequence was cringeworthy
5 April 2023
There were some nice moments in this episode, but this is just more proof that these people are running out of storylines and ideas because in the middle they went into this ridiculously cheesy and bad sitcom dream sequence that was so horrible. I had to fast forward after five minutes. Literally unwatchable. When they returned to the main storyline, everything was fine. But that sitcom thing was a new low. I love this cast, and I love these characters, and I actually like them better than the mothership. At least none of them annoy me like that idiot Buck. But this time it's the writers who are annoying me because they're not doing justice to the talent and characters and world they set up already. If anything, they are denigrating it. Please do better.

Poor attempt at humor
22 March 2023
I guess they were aiming for humorous with this, but it came off silly and over the top. It's similar to the episode of the Fonzie jumping over a shark. It's just wet to far with the concept and the result was what are the worst episodes in series history. I genuinely hope they learn from this. A lame episode in which the Chenford dopplegangers are overplayed to the point of self-mockery. And I think the creators and frankly Hollywood itself needs to get over its self fascination with episodes about people making films about people who are making a film. What a lame repetitive overused cliché.

Waited years to be disappointed
6 March 2023
The difference between this in the original is one particularly important thing. The original was hilarious. This is barely funny. I have to see when I heard this is happening. I thought it was a joke. And there's a lotta good talent involved for sure but I just felt like everything was played so community theater. It just didn't work for me. Very disappointing sequel and the length didn't help at all. Whose idea was it to make a miniseries based on a two hour movie? I should've kept it more short and concise so only the Beth stuff was included. I think that would've helped a lot. Instead they let a lot of crap stay in that should've been edited out. Not recommended.

Great to see Scott Caan and a diverse cast
19 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoy the show. Not sure what other people are watching. It's got interpersonal family drama of an ex (Scott Caan) working for his ex-wife (Dania Ramirez) as boss-their son having been one of their missing cases-that gives it some extra heart, but this is about a team of people who have real passion for finding missing people and reuniting families, and I think it's very promising. So far I have enjoyed every episode. There's a subplot with Mike (Ryan Broussard) who is Nikki's new love interest that makes complications between exes. Keri (Adela Role) is a character who seems to use traditional African beliefs in her work toward solving cases. Hemingway (Peter Gibson) deals with a father slipping away deep into dimentia. So for him, finding the missing, is personal because "the one person I want to find I can't reach." Interesting backstories and set up. A solid cast. Look forward to more.

Easily the best of the vacation films by far
5 January 2023
For myself, I never made the kind of family trip that the Griswolds made across America although I saw some of the sites so I never really related to it. However, I did take a trip across Europe as a teenager so when this movie came out I had just gotten back and it nails it. Still find it as hilarious today as I did back then and it makes me laugh a lot more than the original film. Much better than Christmas Vacation which I think is the weakest of the series. Vegas Vacation is pretty funny too if you've been in Vegas. But I highly recommend this one for a great load of laughs. I especially love the scene where they visit relatives, and the stuff in London. I thought the kids who played the children were not as likable as some of the other films but nonetheless, the film worked out well. A classic comedy.

Soured quickly
15 December 2022
I really was high on the show after the first season and loved it's novel approach to TV medical shows. But it quickly became apparent as it got further, and that the show was really going to jump the shark a lot as far as realism of how things work, and I just couldn't buy into it anymore. I applaud compassion that I grew up son of a doctor and a nurse and my parents always cared more about their patience than money or any other thing. Compassion was the number one value. But they still had to work with the system that exists and I don't think the solutions the show put forth or believable or realistic in many ways. And I ultimately couldn't buy in.

Hope it gets better
18 September 2022
It gets to the basics of setting up the story but there's really very little comedy here and a lot of romance probably but it's supposed to be funny because that's what romantic comedy is and so far I don't see much comedy. There's some good cast members here and some decent acting but I think the writing is fairly week at least for the pilot and I am hoping it will improve if not it certainly will not be something I carry through the entire way..................................................

I came to this looking for something to follow up the amazing extraordinary attorney woo with but although this has some of the same actors, so far none of the charm.

Weak episode of a brilliant series
15 September 2022
The thing that is so great about this show is that Woo is so inspiring and she works with people who support her mostly and clients who are interesting but fundamentally decent people. I am well aware that in real life attorneys sometimes have to work for scumbags but I did not like this episode because the man that is the client is such an asshole. To me it tarnished everything that she had to put up with it and didn't call him out. She's often so blunt with other people why was she not with this client? There were some interesting things that happened with her subplot romantically and so for but as far as the legal case I found this episode to be the weakest of the series and frankly every episode of the series has been outstanding until now.

Solid story with two leads who have no chemistry
2 August 2022
Very much by the numbers romance here, and while both leads are attractive, I just didn't feel any chemistry there which made the movie feel more by the numbers given the cliche plot. It's passable for a boring night but nothing exciting or spectacular and lots of character stereotypes.

Very entertaining Asian rom com with touches of Farrelly
31 July 2022
This is a romantic comedy with a time worn plot but Gonzaga shines and is both funny and charming. There are several good performances, and genuine laughs and a bit of gross humor at times as well. Still, laugh out loud enjoyable comedic moments here, driven by a strong lead.

Really entertaining with Cage back in top form
2 July 2022
Whether you love him or hate him Nicolas Cage gets the joke and he proves it here. He is in top form poking fun of himself while at the same time demonstrating he really does have some great chops as both an actor and action star. Well written with great characterization a very strong, well chosen cast, this one is the kind of movie they really make anymore and it's all fun and well-made. A delight.

Bosch: Legacy (2022– )
5/10
Run of the mill PI series, a disappointment
10 June 2022
Look, I LOVE the Books by Connelly and I LOVE the original BOSCH series, so it was surprising and disappointing to me that I just struggled with this. But I did. While Welliver is great as always, the series suffered greatly from the lack of stronger support. There are appearances by some from the old series, and those moments really popped, but the two returning regulars were disappointing. Mimi Rogers is a great actress with years of experience but here I just felt like she went through the motions half the time. The fire wasn't there, and I found her character emotionless and disappointing most of the time because there was no fireworks and dynamics. And Madison Lintz is young and this is her playing a role she originated but her character was mostly wasted. The storyline is at least partially at fault. Lintz always played Maddie a bit low key and steady but it doesn't work here. Here she needs to be stressed and that protective shell cracking as she is faced with the first real challenge of her life since her mother died. She is trying to prove herself worthy of a field where she follows in the shoes of two legends and I just didn't feel that. I also felt sometimes things were too easy for her. And with Lintz playing steady, low key Maddie, the dynamic was also an issue for me. It's too bad, because Lintz showed a lot of promise in the original series, but here the writers don't really seem to know what to do with her-at least not with any confidence. She doesn't have to be the goodie two shoes. She can be more like her father who is the good guy but pushing the boundaries. That would make sense, since her mother also was a tough edge-pusher, so she would have inherited the genes and personality. But instead we get someone who is too calm and steady most of the time. We need more dynamics, and they just weren't there. Even with the weaker writing (from a team whose writing is generally top notch, I might add), if the character was written and played more like a young adult finally free to figure out who she is in the world and who she wants to be with the emotions and struggles of that, it would work a lot better. It's just too low key. Everything about the original was edgy and pushed boundaries and the realism only added to the grit. But Legacy is not living up to that so far, at least in Season 1, and I find myself for the first time not rushing to binge episodes all at once as soon as they're available, and instead waiting until I get a moment to watch. LINCOLN LAWYER I raced through in a day or two. The original series I almost always watched 10 episodes in one night. And then watched it over and over again. This time, I'm not feeling that. And it's too bad. Because the writing and producing team can do better. Let's hope they do for the future, because Bosch and Maddie have so much more life in them. Honey Chandler feels more played out to me. But we'll see. I'd love to come back and revise this later to a much higher rating and positive review, but I am currently definitely disappointed.

Disappointing second half
30 January 2022
The book was brilliant, one of the most compelling reads I ever read. And yes, it's cliche to say the book was better, but in this case, it really was. The changes were almost entirely in the second half, and it shows. They sucked so much of the tension out of the driving pace of the book by making them, and as a result, the film suffers. Is it still well acted with a fascinating setting? Yes. But the changes about catching the killer (how, when, and events surrounding it) are far less compelling and far more Hollywood than the book, so read the book. It is considered "the first Filipino crime novel," and it won "the Philippine National Book Award" for a reason. The book unfolds at an unbelievable pace that sucks you in, and though I found the film good, after having just finished the book-a masterpiece and one of the best debuts I ever read, and I have read a lot-I can only be disappointed.

A great episode
1 January 2022
This is one of the better episodes I've seen in several seasons. I enjoyed every storyline and I enjoyed all the character development and backstory introduced here. Buck, who may be one of the most annoying characters ever invented, didn't even annoy me in this episode. Instead I found it filled with a great mix of drama and humor and some interesting twists and it was touching. One of the series' best-highly recommended. Also what are the few standalone episodes really because you could watch this without watching any other episode and kind of get a central to series.

Derails in final third from great movie to tragic but recovers slightly
1 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Starts out as a really interesting and powerful love story about a conflicted woman torn between two men. And I thought there were some really beautiful performances and moments here particularly Chiu. I was really into this movie and loving the performances until the twist at the end which I thought made it a completely different type of film. I think I get what the filmakers were trying to do with it but is somebody who is experienced infidelity in my own marriage, I can tell you it was the worst experience ever went through and the most painful and ultimately lead to divorce even though I tried to stay with my wife. And in this movie, Ian is the hero and Zaira was our heroine up until they turned her from someone you could relate to and admire into someone I lost all respect for an intensely dislike. She went from being a strong woman to a weak, manipulated one. Now to her credit she realizes her mistake and the damage she has done and her husband chooses to forgive. He decides he loves her enough. I can tell you as a guy who loved my wife that way - ultimately what destroyed our marriage was her mental illness not infidelity which was a symptom of the larger problem- I get his choice but I still found this movie incredibly painful and I think the tone of the movie really shifted drastically in that last third in a way that weakened the movie. At least for me. Dennis Trillo however is really great here and it takes a RAW that is very laid-back and less dynamic than his two costars roles and turns it into a pillar of strength and the most admirable character in the entire movie. Kudos to him for that.

Misses the mark
15 December 2021
You know I've always enjoyed this series and despite the fact there were impossible things going on, I could escape into it and enjoy it and the characters because the morality and the Theme of family, friendship, and honor was so strong and compelling. But unfortunately they lost it with this one. You can see that Chris Morgan is badly needed here. The writing was subpar and frankly I expected more from Justin Lin. And the whole outer space thing was so ridiculous and so completely preposterous that I couldn't get past that and enjoy the film. All I did was cackle at how stupid it was and wonder why they thought anybody would actually buy into it at all. I'm really glad I did not pay to see this in the theater and waited until it came to streaming because frankly I got it on sale and I saved myself a lot of money. And it was very disappointing. This one is only for series fans who actually feel the need to watch everything as a complete list. Everyone else can just skip it. Go back and watch fast five and see the series at its best instead.

I watched this hoping to learn a lot about the culture of Thailand but I didn't learn hardly anything instead what I saw was an obnoxious American walking around braggadocio basically being a dick. I'm quite unimpressed with this program and its host, and frankly if I want documentaries on foreign culture and travel I will definitely look elsewhere in the future.

The premise here is silly, even over the top, and very few shows could pull it off convincingly. But The Cosby Show is one of them and this is riotous fun as a result. Hilarious from start to finish. One of the better episodes of the later seasons with the show starting to slip a little bit.

One of the series' best episodes
14 August 2021
This is one of those episodes you never forget. So many iconic moments for the series and characters and a great snapshot of the series at its best. It also introduces Captain Freedom, a fun comic relief, but it's the brutal murder at the heart of it that really touches you to the core. Daniel Travanti is Frank Furillo at his best here with strong support from the rest of the cast, especially Trinidad Silva, Joe Spano, and Michael Conrad. An unforgettable episode. If you see one episode, this is the one. Truly great television.

My favorite Predator film
1 August 2021
Arnold as commando in the jungle going Rambo-seen it many times. This one was more unique and more interesting. Don't give me wrong. I love the first Predator movie and the franchise it launched, but this one expanded that franchise by showing us an environment that maybe we didn't expect or anticipated and by showing us variations on the Predator itself. It also establish the government agency OWLF as a force chasing after predators which forever it was part of the universe in comics and books and so on ever after. This one has a lot to offer if you take it for what it is and forget the fact that it doesn't have Arnold. Danny Glover gives a dynamic performance And he has a great supporting cast around him. If there had been no first film, this would still be a great action film of the 80s. Truly an underrated gem.
