Ah yes, we have a winner for the best ‘Comfort Food Movie’ of them all. When a trailer for this show popped up at a screening of The Farewell back in August, I heard gasps of excitement from the (slightly older-skewing) audience, as if everyone’s favorite relatives were coming back to town. Loyal fans of the massively popular TV series will be delighted: if you enjoyed it week by week or streaming, you’re going to love this ‘one more time’ get-together with the elegant Crawleys and their engaging domestic staff.

The Star Citizen story somehow just got stranger thanks to a new report that reveals the insanity behind the game's development.
A new report by Forbes on the development of Star Citizen includes some quotes from people close to the game that shed a little more light on the extent of Cloud Imperium Games' money mismanagement and questionable design direction.
"As the money rolled in, what I consider to be some of [Roberts’] old bad habits popped up—not being super-focused,” said Mark Day, a former Wing Commander producer whose company was hired to work on Star Citizen back in 2013. "It had got out of hand, in my opinion. The promises being made—call it feature creep, call it whatever it is—now we can do this, now we can do that. I was shocked.”

[Note: With the film now out to buy, here’s a reposting of our review of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald from its UK cinema release]
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is the pinnacle of what is wrong with the modern day blockbuster. The second of an intended five installment franchise in J.K. Rowling’s prequel series to the enormously critically acclaimed and well-received Harry Potter franchise, the film showcases the delinquency behind such a saga which has already buckled under the enormous pressure of anticipation and efficient story.
David Yates film undoubtedly wears a docile heart on its bland sleeve. It has moments through its running time that evoke a semi-engaging emotional provocation: through small incidents of character and relative significance of political ignorance, that unfortunately plagues the audience after the fact.

To celebrate #BackToHogwarts Day tomorrow, J.K. Rowling is joined by the cast and crew of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald to reminisce over their favourite Hogwarts memories in this brand new featurette.
Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” is the second of five all new adventures in J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World.
At the end of the first film, the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) was captured by MacUsa (Magical Congress of the United States of America), with the help of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne). But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings.
In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans, Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead.

J. K. Rowling is back with a wizard world tale over which she has complete control — a diverting period adventure starring Eddie Redmayne and scores of fanciful magic creatures that belong on an endangered species list. Yep, it’s 2+plus hours of CGI illusions — in glorious 3-D for those so equipped, and Ms. Rowling has populated it with charming, personable actors. “You know — for adults.”

Writer and director Alex Garland‘s Ex Machina made its way onto many top of the year lists in 2015 (including ours) and became infamous on the internet for a certain famous Oscar Isaac dance sequence. While many hailed it as an intelligent and thrilling work of “thinking man’s sci-fi,” it seems certain few have delved as deeply into the film as Michael Tucker, whose new video essay Ex Machina – The Control of Information deconstructs the structural foundation of Garland’s script to explore how it demands and maintains audience engagement. Tucker argues that, through the use of an unconventional and limited perspective, Ex Machina pulls a Great Gatsby of sorts: The robot Ava (Alicia Vikander) is actually the protagonist, her journey of struggle and revelation told through the eyes of Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson). Yet Caleb is the most interesting avenue for the audience to become engaged and ultimately, tangled up in the narrative yarn.

As we get closer to the mid-November release, we finally get a truly in-depth look at Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and it turns out that it was worth waiting for.
Anything related to the Harry Potter franchise really needs no further sell, but even though the book and film series is almost universally loved, some films are better than others, and certainly some books leave something to be desired. Moreover, some installments aim toward the simplistic, while others (especially when considering the films) look to broaden the scope of the dialog.
They’re all good, but that means something different in some cases. For example, Alfonso Cuarón’s Prisoner of Azkaban stands out among the film as the richest effort, which hoped to elevate the text and its themes.
If the trailer can be believed, it looks as though this one is moving in a similar direction,...

Ominous drumbeats and a shroud of threatening fog opens The Legend of Tarzan, the latest live action reinvention of the fabled stories by Edgar Rice Burroughs. As the smokescreen gives way, an evil plan is concocted by men gripped by greed and/or lust for revenge. But the show is in fact all smoke and mirrors. As the saying goes, there’s not much there there (and it’s a much less interesting Oz).
The adaptation, directed by Harry Potter director David Yates, is as high in production values as you’d expect from a Potter veteran. And Warner Bros. spared no expense in allowing Yates to reunite his group of talented collaborators from the boy wizard movies, including lavish production designer Stuart Craig and action-sequence expert editor Mark Day. Warner Bros. Pictures has released the new full for the much-anticipated adventure Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, which you can check out below.
Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them is an all-new adventure returning us to the wizarding world created by J.K. Rowling.
Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne (“The Theory of Everything”) stars in the central role of wizarding world magizoologist Newt Scamander, under the direction of David Yates, who helmed the last four “Harry Potter” blockbusters.
Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them opens in 1926 as Newt Scamander has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident…were it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt’s fantastic beasts, which...

J.K. Rowling is taking fans back to the world of Harry Potter in Warner Bros. latest project, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. She wrote the script for the film, which is being directed by David Yates. The movie is going to introduce us to a ton of new characters that existed in America in the 1920s, years before the events of Harry Potter.
The story centers on Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), a British magizoologist who travels to New York City with a case full of magical creatures. The creatures in that case end up escaping, and that's what sparks the adventure.
During the Celebration of Harry Potter 2016 in Orlando, Florida, a behind the scenes featurette was released that offers up some footage and additional information from the film that fans are going to want to see. It also includes interviews with members of the cast and crew.

It has been years since the man once known as Tarzan (Skarsgård) left the jungles of Africa behind for a gentrified life as John Clayton III, Lord Greystoke, with his beloved wife, Jane (Robbie) at his side. Now, he has been invited back to the Congo to serve as a trade emissary of Parliament, unaware that he is a pawn in a deadly convergence of greed and revenge, masterminded by the Belgian, Captain Leon Rom (Waltz). But those behind the murderous plot have no idea what they are about to unleash.

David Yates, who helmed the last few Harry Potter films (and dominated with them), has officially begun production on his next flick, a retelling of Tarzan for Warner Bros. The studios announced today that cameras were rolling along with some new details on the story this film will have!
While my interest in another Tarzan film is almost non-existent, I am keenly interested in seeing what David Yates does next. We haven't seen him do much since Harry Potter ended, and I'm hoping Tarzan will be another amazing film from him. From the press release:

Los Angeles — Robert Redford does his most compelling work in some time as both actor and director in "The Company You Keep," a tense yet admirably restrained thriller about a fugitive forced out of hiding after 30 years to prove his innocence. Adapted with clarity and intelligence by Lem Dobbs from Neil Gordon's novel, and lent distinguishing heft by its roster of screen veterans, this gripping drama provides an absorbing reflection on the courage and cost of dissent.
Recalling aspects of Sidney Lumet's poignant "Running on Empty" from 1988, but with a more subdued emotional palette, the film opens with vintage-style news footage detailing charges against members of radical antiwar group the Weather Underground in the early 1970s for plotting to blow up buildings in multiple U.S. cities. A second report follows, attributing responsibility to the same group for a Michigan bank robbery during which a security guard was killed.

News Limited appears to be set to review its paywall plans for its metro tabloid mastheads after a slow takeup of Herald Sun subscriptions, The Australian’s Mark Day has suggested.
Writing in his column, Day – who is usually well informed on the inner workings of his parent company – said: “There is acknowledgment at News that strategies for paywall introductions at other titles may need review.”
In April, The Herald Sun was News Limited’s first tabloid to erect a paywall. But readers who took the three month free trial have not necessarily converted to paying subscribers. The company has so far declined to release any takeup numbers for the $4.95 a week subscription although Day says that 240,000 took the initial trial.
Day, who describes the Herald Sun as “News’s canary in the coalmine”, quotes “a senior editor” within the company he asked about the drive to paywalls and whether it would work.

"Shaun has been writing and the band have been getting together in the studio putting ideas down. I'm sure it will be a great Happy Mondays album." Explaining his U-turn to the (more)...

Awards season may have come and gone, but sci-fi fans still have something to look forward to with today's announcement of the Saturn Award nominees.
The awards, presented by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films, recognize excellence in these genres, which are often underrepresented at other awards shows.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, this year's big movie contenders are "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2," "Hugo," tied with 10 nominations each.
A number of the movies scoring big have been commercial successes but have not received awards show love, including J.J. Abrams' $260-million grossing monster hit "Super 8," which nabbed eight nominations, and "Captain America: The First Avenger," which earned nearly $400 million worldwide, coming in with six.
One of the most surprising cross-genre hits is Woody Allen's romantic comedy "Midnight in Paris," which took home the award for Best Original Screenplay at Sunday's Oscars, in...

The original lineup of the Happy Mondays have reportedly announced their return. Shaun Ryder, his brother Paul, Gary Whelan, Bez and Rowetta Satchell will return for live shows this year, together with Mark Day and Paul Davis, who both sat out the band's 1999 comeback, The Quietus reports. The group said in a statement published by the website: "The rumours are true... Happy Mondays, the seminal Manchester band who changed musical culture forever has reformed and will be available for select live gigs across 2012." Rumours of a return were shrugged off by a spokesperson last month, but Shaun Ryder later hinted that there was "a lot to look forward to next year". The franchise is over, the dust has settled, and what we have been left with is one remarkable movie franchise to look back on with mostly praise. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 was a great movie, now it’s time to consider it for awards. Is it really good enough to be considered for a “Best Picture” at the Oscars?

Chicago – Taken as one complete film, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” is easily the best installment of the series. By splitting J.K. Rowling’s spellbinding final book into two parts, director David Yates and screenwriter Steve Kloves had much more time to pace each sequence and develop each character to the best of their ability. The added minutes have enabled them to deliver a rousing finale to one of the greatest franchises in history.
That being said, I freely admit that my experience of growing up with Harry Potter has contributed considerably to my impassioned involvement in the subsequent film adaptations. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2″ stars Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson, reprising their roles as Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. The film’s ensemble cast also includes Helena Bonham Carter, Robbie Coltrane, Warwick Davis, Tom Felton,...
