It's clear with each new addition in the "Fast and Furious" franchise that these movies are about family, not physics. What began as "Point Break" with cars has evolved into the ever-more-ridiculous exploits of a super spy team stacked with heroes — and villains and villains turned heroes. From racing the streets with the all-powerful Nos to racing into space, this saga left plausibility in their rearview many moons ago. Luckily, for the most part, the movies are held together thanks to the chemistry of the "Fast Family" and action sequences so knowingly bonkers the audience feels in on the joke. Buoyed by over-the-top stunts, the "Fast & Furious" franchise has never been subtle about much of anything, and this is especially true for retcons. Over the course of ten popcorn flicks, the series has introduced more than one long-lost #family member. In "Fast & Furious 6," Jason Statham's Deckard Shaw (first known as Ian Shaw) materialized as the brother of Luke Evans' villain, Owen Shaw. Just two years ago, "F9" revealed that the head of the family, Vin Diesel's Dom Toretto, had his own long-lost brother, Jakob (John Cena).
The trend continues in "Fast X," which, as others have pointed out, really missed out on the chance to call itself "Fast10 Your Seatbelts." The tenth "Fast & Furious" film has earned praise for the way it seamlessly integrates Jason Momoa's Dante Reyes — a contender for the franchise's best baddie, writes /Film's Rafael Motamayor — into footage from "Fast Five.

Entertainment Directed by the Russo brothers of Avengers: Endgame fame, The Gray Man is Netflix’s most expensive production yet with a budget of 200 million.Geetika MantriDhanush/InstagramThink of a blockbuster Hollywood action thriller, and you are likely to find a few common elements – a high-stakes setting, car chases, superhuman action sequences, and very clearly demarcated protagonists and antagonists, usually hypermasculine. The Gray Man has all of these along with an ensemble cast including Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, and Tamil star Dhanush, as well as gorgeous filming locales across Europe, elaborate sets, and impressively choreographed action. Yet, the Russo brothers’ latest offering – made on a whopping budget of 200 million, Netflix’s priciest for a film till 2021 – while fun, offers little else that stands out and is not already seen in classic Hollywood action franchises like Mission Impossible, James Bond, John Wick and the like. If anything, it lacks the latter's style.

At age 13, Ryan Gosling was spreading cheer on “The Mickey Mouse Club.” But something must have snapped in the dozen years between “The Notebook” and “La La Land.” The Canadian heartthrob seems committed to convincing us that he can be a cold-blooded, even-keeled, unsentimental killer. Starting with Nicolas Winding Refn’s “Drive,” followed by the Danish director’s “Only God Forgives” and now playing the title character in the Russo brothers’ “The Gray Man,” an actor who once radiated charisma in “Crazy Stupid Love” has been perfecting an inexpressive cool that borders on nihilism, keeping his pulse stable and poker face fixed as he offs whatever adversaries come his way.
Gosling doesn’t just want to be an action star; he wants to be the Hollywood version of Alain Delon, the handsome French icon who played a sociopath with perfect cheekbones in “Purple Noon” and a hit man with no visible emotions in “Le Samouraï.

At this point, the entire Fast & Furious franchise has become nothing but an exercise in one-upping itself. Starting with Fast Five‘s gravity-defying cliff jump, Justin Lin took to Fast & Furious 6 with every intention to blow his previous film’s scope away in a haze of Nos residue – and he did. Lin’s antics cemented a fresh tone of absurdity for future filmmakers to follow, and first up is James Wan with his entry into the car-chasing, muscle-bulging, explosion-heavy franchise.
So how does Furious 7 stack up against Lin’s turbo-fueled ass-kickers? Let’s just say Wan makes a damn good case as to why he left the horror genre behind for a bit, silencing any doubters who thought his transition to be foolish. The boys and girls are back, and you’ll be glad that you are, too.

Austin - One of the things that impresses me most about the team that throws the SXSW Film Festival in Austin every year is how adaptable they are. I've seen them roll with all sorts of things, and they seem to me to be open to all sorts of ideas in terms of programming. There was nothing originally scheduled for the Sunday night midnight slot at the Paramount, but when I woke up on Sunday morning, the festival had announced a very special treat for anyone who had a badge for the festival, and anticipation was running high because of which title it was. This coming weekend, I'll be attending the junket for "Furious 7," so I was already scheduled to see the film. But seeing it tonight at the Paramount Theater, completely packed with lunatic movie fans who were all crazy excited to be there was better than any junket screening possibly could be.

Though G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra was considered by many to be a complete and utter write-off, it also had a cartoonish and flippant sensibility that resulted in a decent box office haul, making its sequel, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, inevitable. The sequel, however, which finds new director Jon M. Chu and screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick attempt to overhaul the series, loses that camp buffoonery and replaces it with an all-too serious military realism that’s sluggish and irritating.

Can you talk about the difference between this and the first film?
Lorenzo: I think tone is probably the biggest difference. Paramount came to me with John as the way to do it and looking at his past work I wasn’t sure what that meant in terms of what he’s done and how that would apply to what this was. And so we really talked a great deal initially about, one, he grew up with Joe and he really understood it and so I knew immediately that he had an internal grounding in it that was really good. It wasn’t a fantasy to him. It was part of his childhood. So there was this innate understanding and we talked a lot about tone and what he liked and what he liked about Joe growing up and what he would try and apply to it today – versus what we had done originally.

The best Fast and Furious film is finally available on Blu-ray and has tons of things for action junkies to love. After four films about trading pinks with bad guys this latest installment, “Fast Five,” really took the franchise in a bigger, badder and ballsier direction. I have never been a huge fan of the other films, enjoying them as decent guilty pleasure fare, but this movie was an action film lovers dream. A heist film at its core it felt more like “Italian Job 2″ than a F&F film. I especially loved a car chase pulling a vault through Rio de Janeiro, a great fight between Diesel and the Rock and there of course is slight bits of comedy too.

Fast Five does not arrive on Blu-ray and DVD until October 4th, but there will be plenty of high octane action between now and then. Tyrese Gibson and Jordana Brewster will be on hand at the Chicagoland Speedway on September 16 to jumpstart the action of the Nascar Camping World Truck Series race. Fast Five was my personal favorite installment in the franchise, and I am excited for what is to come in Fast Six. Where do you even begin? Let's go with the title: Fast Five. This is the fifth film in a franchise that started in 2001 with The Fast and the Furious, and the first sequel's cutesy 2 Fast 2 Furious has nothing on the way the series' makers seem to have given up coming up with anything original. "Fast Five" is what you would call the film casually, tossing it around with fellow viewers, though it feels more like shorthand that cropped up in the production offices and somehow stuck. It's choppy and ugly, and it betrays a total lack of effort on the part of the filmmakers to win over anyone who isn't in the series' crowd of enthusiasts and hangers-on. It's a nickname made official. This is the problem that runs throughout Fast Five: its utter lack of ideas. The bulk of the film is set in Rio de Janeiro, and...

Here's something for those who have wanted to see Inception nominated or awarded with more significant honors than the film has been given so far in the awards season. Sure, the top prize from the American Society of Cinematographers is essentially a technical award, but it is the technical award, and taking the prize is no small honor. Tonight Wally Pfister won the Asc Award for feature achievement for his work on Inception. I've long held that Wally Pfister is one of Christopher Nolan's primary key ingredients in creating effective films. No one has quite the clear, calm eye Pfister does. I never would have thought it was possible to add a real air of serenity to the blockbuster formula, but he manages it, and seemingly does it with ease. His skills have been steadily evolving through his work with Mr. Nolan, and I can't imagine films like The Dark Knight...

The cast of Stephan Elliott’s A Few Best Men will include Xavier Samuel, Kris Marshall, Kevin Bishop and Olivia Newton-John as the mother of the bride.
“I’m thrilled Olivia Newton-John is part of the cast; Dean Craig has written a fantastically entertaining script, and it’s especially exciting to partner Stephan Elliott with Olivia who is a true music and film icon. John V. Soto’s Needle has won Best Supporting Actress (Jessica Marais), Best Cinematography and Best Special Effects at the British Horror Film Festival.
“Our UK Premiere went really well. The crowd loved the film and I was excited for Needle to have so many nominations. To actually win an award, let alone three, against such tough competition, is very gratifying and testament to the long hours and hard work put in by our cast and crew,” said Soto.
The cinematography was in charge of Dop Stephen Windon, and the special effects were done by Cutting Edge and Meg.
Needle has also won a Golden Skull at Screamfest in Los Angeles. It was shot in Perth and features Marais, Michael Dorman, Trilby Glover, Tahyna Tozzi, Travis Fimmel, Ben Mendelsohn, Khan Chittenden, John Jarratt and Jane Badler.

it's not Tuesday but it's time for a Top Ten anyway... as this is yesterday's news already!
AMPAS used to hide their membership roster like the vote tallies but in the information age, they've opened up. Now we get to see the whole list of new invitees each year. I wonder how they keep they're membership around 6,000 given how many people they invite annual. Maybe enough people reject the offer, stop paying their dues, or pass from this mortal coil each year to balance it out?
You can read the full list of recipients at Indiewire, but as is the Film Experience tradition, we like to pinpoint the newest (potential) members whose future ballots we'd most like to see. So let's have at it.
New Academy Member Ballots We Most Want To See

They're two separate people but we'd like to imagine them filling out their ballots together inbetween sets.
