May has only just arrived, and it’s already heating up at Hulu! Dozens of new titles have moved in for the new month, with some of streamer’s biggest hits landing on the platform during its first weekend, including Season 3 of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s “Welcome to Wrexham” and Season 5 of “The Kardashians,” but Hulu will be adding major titles all month long, from the premiere of the coming-of-age comedy film “Prom Dates” to the streaming debut of last year’s psychological thriller “Eileen.”

Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2024 is missing a certain amount of original series firepower. In the place of a blockbuster like The Handmaid’s Tale or Shōgun, however, is some content diversity.
The first of the month sees the premiere of four-episode British series Shardlake. This mystery drama takes place during the reign of Henry VIII and features none other than Thomas Cromwell (Sean Bean) investigating a murder. Other series of note this month include the Korean drama Uncle Samsik on May 15.
Movies are bit more interesting on Hulu in May. Teen comedy Prom Dates premieres on May 3. That will be followed by the 2023 Adam Drive film Ferrari on May 24. Before all that though is the real heavy hitter. You can watch Austin Butler’s acclaimed performance as The King in Elvis as early as May 1. But get to it quick before the Baz Luhrmann film departs on...

May is of course the month of Star Wars, and the House of Mouse will celebrate with “Star Wars: Tales of the Empire” on May 4. Disney is also home to BBC America’s “Doctor Who,” which returns for a highly-anticipated 14th season with Ncuti Gatwa stepping into the Tardis as the new Doctor (he stepped into the role in December 2023 as part of the series’ beloved Christmas special tradition).

A New Year means lots of removals from Netflix and January 1st is looking busy, with over 100 movies set to leave the service already. Below, we’ll be keeping track of all the Netflix departures for the first month of 2024.
First, a few housekeeping notes as to how Netflix removals work before we dive in. Due to licensing agreements, shows and movies added to Netflix aren’t added forever. Instead, they’re essentially rented for a fixed period. All the shows below have their current window on Netflix ending and will likely be bound for a rival streaming service.
We list titles slightly differently from other outlets, with our listings being the actual day of removal. If you want to watch any titles scheduled to expire on January 1st, for example, you’ll need to watch by the end of December 31st.

Free TV Networks, a new programming entity with a presence in both over-the-air broadcast and streaming, has enlisted Warner Bros. Discovery, Lionsgate and Gray Television as partners and suppliers.
The new company is founded and led by Jonathan Katz, who gained attention a decade ago by creating multicast networks, or “diginets” using spectrum made available via the TV industry’s conversion to high-definition signals during the 2000s. That portfolio of networks, including Bounce, Escape and Grit was acquired in 2017 by E.W. Scripps for $292 million.
The first channels from Free TV will be networks centered on African-American programming and Westerns. Launching New Year’s Day as a diginet, the flagship brand will be The365. It will cater to African-American viewers with a lineup of movies and series like

The latest feature from David Fincher, a big-budget drama series from Steven Knight and Shawn Levy, and an Oscar hopeful starring Annette Bening and Jodie Foster are among the standout new additions hitting Netflix in November.
With The Killer, Fincher reteams with Seven writer Andrew Kevin Walker to adapt the graphic novel written by Alexis Nolent. The film, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival this year and debuts on Netflix on Nov. 10, stars Michael Fassbender as a shadowy unnamed assassin and features a cast that includes Arliss Howard, Charles Parnell, Gabriel Polanco, Kerry O’Malley, Emiliano Pernía, Sala Baker, Sophie Charlotte and Tilda Swinton.
The Hollywood Reporter‘s review of The Killer described the film as “a satisfyingly retro, location-hopping genre exercise with fisticuffs, gadgets (albeit ones bought from Amazon) and smooth-talking antagonists that all plays like a tongue-in-cheek spoof of James Bond movies.”

Eighteen years ago, Tyler Perry brought his DIY play to the big screen. Released in 2005, “Diary of a Mad Black Woman” chronicles one beleaguered woman’s journey to healing and self-discovery after being betrayed by her philandering husband. The film features all the classical elements of Perry productions. It’s set in a predominantly Black area of the South, there are theatrical church scenes and plenty of the over-the-top histrionics extracted straight from his plays. But more importantly, there was Madea.
Played by Perry himself, the matriarch emerged as a rambunctious, pistol-packing matriarch who’s as comfortable espousing quirky wisdom as she is ferocious clapbacks. Upon its release, the flick got mixed reviews from critics — but it grossed $50.7 million at the box office, just about 10-times more than its budget. Since then, Perry’s released nine additional Madea films, with the eight that came out in theaters grossing $570 million at the box office,...

Bold, beautiful, and bittersweet, Tyler Perry's "A Jazzman's Blues" is a larger-than-life love story set during the Jim Crow era. It's an epic tale about love and loss with a strong musical component (hence the title); the core conflict is the star-crossed lovers, but the story is so grand, so encompassing, that it touches on various topics: Black culture, drug addiction, racism, identity, trauma ... the list goes on.
Tyler Perry wrote "A Jazzman's Blues" 27 years ago, and the project is obviously a very personal one. That passion shines throughout, scene by scene. The film is brimming with sentimentality, and there's an earnestness here that feels deeply sincere, if not always effective. This is an unusual project for the director, who is best known for comedies like "Madea's Family Reunion"; he has tackled more serious fare — such as "Precious," which he produced — but he's never really had what could be...

Veteran actress Cicely Tyson, whose career spanned almost seven decades, died Thursday.
She was 96.
“I have managed Miss Tyson’s career for over 40 years, and each year was a privilege and blessing,” Tyson’s manager, Larry Thompson, said in a statement to Variety.
“Cicely thought of her new memoir as a Christmas tree decorated with all the ornaments of her personal and professional life. Today she placed the last ornament, a Star, on top of the tree.”
A cause of death has not been revealed.
On TV screens, Tyson made history in 1963 with her role as secretary Jane Foster in on East Side/West Side, making her the first Black actress to co-star in a TV drama.
The actress went on to guest-star or recur in many series over the years, Guiding Light, The Outer Limits, Touched by an Angel, House of Cards, How to Get Away With Murder, and Madam Secretary.

Gone this award season, along with many other live events, is the annual Governors Awards, scuttled by the pandemic. Instead, the Academy Board of Governors has voted to present two Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Awards for the first time, not only to filmmaker Tyler Perry, but also to the Motion Picture & Television Fund (MPTF). The Oscar statuettes will be presented at the two-month-delayed 93rd Oscars which airs live on ABC and to broadcast outlets worldwide on Sunday, April 25, 2021.
“There has been such widespread generosity in our industry that limiting the Hersholt Humanitarian Award to one recipient, this year in particular, was impossible. So, we are breaking with tradition and giving two awards to honor that spirit,” said Academy President David Rubin in an official statement. “Tyler’s cultural influence extends far beyond his work as a filmmaker. Tyler Perry and the Motion Picture and Television Fund have been selected by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences Board of Governors to both receive Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Awards to be presented at the 93rd Annual Academy Awards on Sunday April 25.
Perry is being honored for his extensive work on humanitarian and social justice causes, while the MPTF will receive the first Hersholt ever awarded to an organization, an act the AMPAS board had to approve on this one time only basis as MPTF heads towards its 100th of “taking care of our own”.

"I probably would have walked away from Gone Girl. If I had known who David Fincher was, and his body of work, or if I'd known the book was so popular, I would have said, No... and my agent knew that! He didn't tell me until after I signed on!" ~ Tyler Perry via Yahoo That's a word-for-word quote from writer/director Tyler Perry who stars in Fincher's Gone Girl, due out in October. Now let's consider this for a second... Perry starred in Diary of a Mad Black Woman in 2005 and first directed a film with Madea's Family Reunion in 2006 and was invited into the Academy in 2009. Forgetting everything Fincher did pre-2005, since Perry started working in the industry and two films after he was invited into the Academy, David Fincher directed Zodiac (2007), The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008), The Social Network (2010) and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo...

Sleigh-slamming into a theater near you this weekend, Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas marks the eighth incarnation of Perry’s fast-talking, no-nonsense matriarchal character on the big screen. Y’all better watch out if this wise-talking granny slides down your chimney, because she’ll be serving up enough neatly wrapped Madea-isms and family holiday advice to usher you well into the New Year. Analysis of 10,000 movies reveals the films with the highest disparity between critic and audience reviews
There are some movies you'll just go and see no matter what the critics say. Maybe it's a big dumb comedy and you feel like a laugh, or there's that one actor who you'll watch no matter what. Conversely, there are some critics who can have a big influence on what you'll see, no matter what your friends say – you know their work, and trust their recommendations.
So, what are the movies that people loved, but critics hated? And what about those movies that got rave reviews but just didn't click with audiences?
To try and answer these questions I've analysed 10,000 movies from 1970 to 2013 in the Rotten Tomatoes database, and determined the difference in audience score and critic score by subtracting the former from the latter. This gives us an index of audience-critic agreement, which...

ABC's upcoming midseason series "Mistresses" had two messages to deliver to the press at the TCA 2013 Winter Press Tour: The show will be different from its BBC inspiration and it will be sexy. Very sexy.
"Tonally the show is different from the BBC version," star Alyssa Milano says. "There's a lightness and a fun to what we try to do that's different."
"The BBC format happened at a much slower pace," executive producer Rina Mimoun ("Everwood") adds. "We took a lot of what they had and front-loaded our show with that. We had to run in a whole other direction because we had to make a lot more episodes."
Executive producer Bob Sertner ("Revenge") explains the decision to deviate from the original series was only logical: "We always said from the very beginning a show like this wouldn't be very fun to watch if you could go online and find out where it was heading.

The Amazing Spider-Man easily held on its lead on Friday, though it doesn't quite seem to be reaching the heights of previous entries in the franchise. Meanwhile, Oliver Stone's Savages got off to a fine start in fifth place, while Katy Perry: Part of Me looks like it's coming down on the wrong side of the concert genre. Spider-Man earned $20.7 million on Friday, which brings its four-day total to $95.7 million. That's way off from all previous Spider-Man movies, which had made at least $125.9 million through the same point. Opening on a Tuesday does skew those results, though, and The Amazing Spider-Man should close that gap significantly over the next two days. Sony is currently forecasting between $60 and $65 million for the three-day weekend, which translates to a $135 million to $140 million six-day start.Ted had another great day on Friday, dropping 49 percent to $10.5 million. After nearly two months of Summer movies targeted at younger audiences, this weekend served as a good reminder that adults like to go to the theater too. Seth MacFarlane's Ted scored one of the best R-rated comedy debuts ever, while R-rated male stripper flick Magic Mike proved to be a very attractive option. Even the latest PG-13 Tyler Perry movie, Madea's Witness Protection, had a strong opening propelled mainly by older African American women. Overall the Top 12 earned an estimated $196.9 million, which makes it the biggest aggregated weekend ever in the month of June.Ted scored a very impressive $54.1 million from 3,239 locations. That bests the first Hangover movie's $44.98 million for highest debut ever for an original R-rated comedy. Among all R-rated movies it ranks eighth all-time, and it ranks third among comedies behind The Hangover Part II and Sex and the City. Ted's success is due primarily to the strength of its broadly-appealing,...

The lure of original movies won out at the box office on Friday, with Ted and Magic Mike drawing huge crowds to movie theaters. Brave held on decently as well, and Madea's Witness Protection performed in line with past Madea movies. As a result, four movies earned over $10 million on Friday, which appears to be the first time that's ever happened. Ted took first place with an estimated $20.2 million, which is the highest opening day ever for an original R-rated comedy ahead of the first Hangover's $16.7 million. It's also ranks third all-time for R-rated comedies behind The Hangover Part II ($31.6 million) and Sex and the City ($26.8 million). Universal is projecting an opening weekend around $51 million, though plenty of comparisons put it a bit higher (up to $55 million). Considering the strong word-of-mouth the movie seems to be generating, along with the utter lack of comedy competition for the next month, Ted...

<< Continued from "'Mike,' 'Ted' Try to Unseat Merida"Madea's Witness Protection marks Tyler Perry's 12th directorial effort in the past six years, and his fourth movie to feature his most popular character, Madea, in the title. The prolific writer-director-star's two best debuts came from two of his Madea movies: Madea's Family Reunion opened to $30 million in 2006, while Madea Goes to Jail holds the Perry record with $41 million in 2009. Unfortunately, Madea's Big Happy Family only opened to $25.1 million last year, and other recent Perry movies have also underperformed a bit. Still, a movie's potential often comes down to the strength of its premise, and Witness Protection has a clearer one than nearly any of Perry's past efforts. It's also broadened its potential audience with American Pie stalwart Eugene Levy, and Lionsgate has been marketing the movie not only to Perry fans but also to comedy fans in general (for example,...

During our Summer Movie Box-Office Draft, I considered taking Tyler Perry's Madea's Witness Protection as a film that could bolster my overall total. However, Madea's Big Happy Family faltered at the box-office compared to the two that came before it. Our draft was based on taking a film's overall worldwide gross minus two-and-a-half times the budget. Let's take a look at previous installments. In 2006 Madea's Family Reunion was made on a reported budget of $6 million. It made $63.3 million worldwide, which would end up netting $48.3 million. Good money. In 2009 Madea Goes to Jail was made for $17.5 million and made $90.5 million, which nets $46.75 million. A small dip, but still solid returns. Then last year, Madea's Big Happy Family was made for a reported $25 million and ended up making $53.3 million for a net loss of $9.2 million. Not good. Then I looked at his most recent film, Good Deeds, which was made for...

Blair Underwood is hungry. Just a few hours ago, he was in Los Angeles, and now he's lounging in a tufted turquoise booth, contemplating the breakfast menu at Gordon Ramsay's The London. If Underwood is jet-lagged, it doesn't show. Even a concession to comfort in the form of a zip-up pullover seems like a three-piece suit on the effortlessly gorgeous actor. When the waiter comes to take his order, he nonchalantly requests an egg-white omelet and steel-cut oatmeal. Oh, and whole-wheat toast, turkey bacon, cranberry juice, and green tea. That takes care of the food. But even breakfast at The London won't satisfy Underwood's creative cravings. Though he's conquered television, with long-running series ("L.A. Law") and high-profile guest spots ("Sex and the City"), and film ("Tyler Perry's Madea's Family Reunion"), he's still missing one credit: Broadway. That will change this spring, when he takes on the Main Stem as the beastly Stanley Kowalski.

Actor Tyler Perry has obtained a pilot's licence so he can personally fly his pals to his private island in the Bahamas.
The Madea's Family Reunion funnyman purchased his own getaway in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean a few years ago, but getting there proved a problem - he realised he would have to board a single-engine seaplane, because the retreat has no airport.
Perry decided he'd feel more comfortable making the trip if he was at the controls, and started taking flying lessons.
The Precious producer says, "I think that's the way we should be in life, whatever you're afraid of, once you realise it, once you conquer it, you're like, 'Oh, what the hell was I afraid of?'"
Perry's private plane was in the news recently - he loaned it to Whitney Houston's family so they could use it to transport the tragic soul star's body from Los Angeles to New Jersey on the day after her autopsy.

The Madea's Family Reunion director received the Chairman's Award at the New York ceremony, held by Sharpton's National Action Network.
Sharpton thanked Perry for giving a $200,000 (£125,000) donation to the National Action Network and providing work for several African-American actors in Hollywood as he presented him with the trophy.
Sharpton told the crowd, "The ultimate pride is where you don't have to bend and adjust for others to accept you... He (Perry) didn't go mainstream, he brought mainstream to us."
Accepting his prize, Perry returned Sharpton's praise, telling him, "To have someone like you who has done all that you have done... and have inspired and encouraged and fought for so many people, to stand here and to give me this award, this is really, really awesome."

Funnyman Chris Rock and his wife, Malaak, were also feted at the prizegiving, according to the Associated Press.

You probably recognize Rachel Nichols from her roles in numerous adventure flicks (no shame in that), because she's stood out in movies like "Star Trek," "Conan" and "G.I. Joe." But this action hero is about to embark on one of her toughest challenges yet: the romantic comedy.
Nichols' latest film, "A Bird of the Air," favors quiet subtext over CGI effects (well, except for one opinionated parrot), and a quirky librarian stalker (that's Nichols) over cliché chance encounters.
