A more objective review of this biography
12 March 2023
This biography is definitely Osho-friendly, nevertheless quite informative in depicting his life, his ashrams and odyssee through footage and interviews with people who actually had met him. It certainly doesn't shy away from telling the problems with his secretary Sheela, with the Oregon neighbors, US officials and intelligence agencies who were quite tenacious in persecuting him around the world.

What I missed, was a deeper dive into his teachings (although you can hear snippets of his discourses), and there's almost no material from his books (as I've read some of them in the 1990s). Furthermore, it was annoying and unnecessary to use emotional music in some scenes.

Can I recommend this biography? Well, yes, but as a biography only. I think it may be a little thin for people who would like to know more about his body of work (e.g. Living a free sexuality, against organized religion, iintroduction to meditation techniques and energy therapy). You can find them elsewhere, abundantly.

Far Inferior to the 2000 Mini-Series
19 October 2021
You can see the production values, the visual megalomania and hear an impressive soundtrack in Villeneuve's remake. That are the good things to say about this movie. This might be enough for the popcorn munchers.

But for those who haven't read the Frank Herbert books or seen the very good 2000 mini-series, it may have become quite clear that the director can't tell a coherent story to save his life. Many cuts seem to be too abrupt, without the necessary bridging, without explanation why the next scene happens at all. "Anecdotes and Pieces from a Good Book" by Villeneuve, is more like it.

And another thing that bothered me was the acting. There are good young actors out there, but Chalamet, Ferguson and Zendaya aren't it. The often lifeless performances with flat emotions, if any, left a lot to be desired.

Conclusion: a forgettable remake.

Like Chewing Stale Bread
24 April 2021
This movie, alas, didn't add much to the topic of a couple dealing with her being raped (for the curious: the rape itself isn't shown). With two mediocre actors (she with a resemblance to Kaley Cuoco) and a screenplay providing almost no plot ideas, we have to watch much too long the husband struggling with the fact that the perpetrator is unknown and the chances to catch him are minimal. His connection to his wife is falling apart.

Conclusion: watching not recommended.

Nothing out of the Ordinary
19 January 2021
This is a mediocre movie about amnesia after a car accident, with memories of two relationships and a little thriller in the end thrown in. The main actress Nicole Souza is nice, but she still has a way to go to become a *good* actress. The rest of the cast is grade C or worse, and the screenplay had problems working out the characters, most of them remained flat.

Conclusion: You can sit through the movie, but it's like feeding on stale bread - not recommended.

Meaningless, frantic and superfluous movie
2 January 2021
Wow, that was awful. My wife and I hoped to get a fresh, funny or insightful perspective on the soul topic, maybe with a little heart-felt narrative mixed in, but nothing of that sort happened in the first 35 minutes that we were able to stand this movie. As nothing worthwhile was happening in the story, only more random encounters with other characters, we killed it. Conclusion - not worth watching.

20 minutes were enough to turn this off
2 December 2020
Oh my! What an awful bit of a superficial conversation I had to endure from two actors with really little talent - a mood killer if you were set to watch a romantic movie with stars and meteors. And by the way: check with an astronomer, how much of a meteor shower can be seen during the suggested full moon. Conclusion: definitely not recommended.

Soulless piece of action
28 November 2020
When you substract the incessant action scenes, the CGI and the quickly-thrown-in dialogs that have no permittance to linger, this movie leaves you with an empty stomach and an ADHD sickness. Don't look for anything scientific or any further ramifications from the gimick with the time inversion, it's just an unexplored idea to make the movie sound interesting.
  • Conclusion: Watching definitely not recommended.

Superficial Travelog with a Less than Mediocre Actress
23 June 2020
It took me 30 minutes to turn this movie off. Usually a movie gets 45 minutes to prove that it's worth the time watching. When the director - who seems to be more suited for reports of exotic places and tourist-information-like shots - pretends that our female protagonist's travel around the world in five weeks has a deeply emotional background, i.e. fulfilling her dead mother's wish to see all the continents - neither the director nor the actress are able to convey anything of it. - Watching not recommended.

Impressionistic Journey to Abandoned Places
27 April 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Director Nikolaus Geyrhalter revisits buildings and places that once had human life and a pulsating community around them. Those places are now exposed to rain and weather, some of them inhabited by birds, insects and plants reclaiming the territory. Geyrhalter doesn't comment with any soundtrack or camera movements. You can only hear the (excellently integrated) sounds of objects and nature.

So, dear audience, what do you feel while watching human-built places without humans in slow decay? Nostalgia for the life that had been there? Relief that the intruders are finally gone? Melancholy in view of death and disintegration of all things? - A strong, challenging film for introspective people. Highly recommended.

Schlöndorff's Hack Job Movie of Max Frisch's Outstanding Novel
13 January 2016
As many German-speaking students know, Max Frisch's "Homo Faber" is standard literature in classes, and rightly so. It is one of the rare novels that profoundly show the transformation of an extreme type of person and creed:

Homo Faber, the man as the forger of his own fate, the believer in machines, technology and reason, filled with disgust towards all nature and "mushy" things like relationships, who rejects all signs and omens, finally has the bliss to get to know love and the fate to lose it.

None of the subtleties, deep characterization and symbolism of Frisch's novel survived in this movie - and Julie Delpy's sweet performance was not enough to make it at least half worthwhile. - Movie not recommended (read the book).

You're Not Cut Out for This If You're Human/Female
24 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
An extremely cynical movie that justifies a lot of things: to make a difference in the war against drugs the "good" guys have to become animals, murderers, assassins like the enemy. No law restrictions attached.

And if you insist on procedure by the book, giving the drug people a minimum of rights, you are considered weak and not cut out for the job. The female FBI lead (Emily Blunt) is actually not leading anything, just coming along as a legal requirement. She is an awful and stereotypical depiction of THE woman among REAL men.

As was told to her at the end of the movie - she should go to a small town where laws still mean something. - Movie not recommended.

TV Garbage and False Advertising
3 January 2015
"Amerikas Westküste" (German, meaning "America's West Coast"), a 5-part documentary for German/French TV, is suggesting to tell us actually something about the US West Coast, i.e. give information useful for sightseeing, planning your holidays/tours, know more about the history of locations and beautiful landscapes? No, none of that.

In a superficial way, accompanied by annoying emotional music, it uses the West Coast States as a prompt to tell us about people and companies we don't want to know about (e.g. Starbucks or, in Oregon, a shoe manufacturer - VEEERY INTERESTING) and trendy activities (e.g. sandboarding).

After the second part, I refrained from watching the rest. The title of the documentary is a blatant example of brazen false advertising. It should accurately be called "We'll steal your time by telling you about people and companies you don't care about who happen to live somewhere on the US West Coast".

Inadequate movie of a director resting on his laurels
28 January 2010
Oh man, Peter Jackson! What a mediocre movie and an outright insult that was! Why?

A mediocre movie because you failed to thrill or move the audience, a patchwork of scenes that didn't believably convey the pain and struggle that could be expected in such a situation. Admittedly Saoirse Ronan is acting nicely but she couldn't single-handedly save this confused film. And outstanding actresses like Rachel Weisz and Susan Sarandon degraded to minimal roles wouldn't save an incoherent screenplay.

It was also an insult to the fantastic novel of Ms. Sebold! Away with the subtleties, the deep melancholy meditation on life and relations, and the long and wearing healing process that is fabulously described. So, folks, I highly recommend that you read the book and forget about this mess of a movie as quickly as possible.

Very important documentary against "established facts"
20 December 2009
Not my first video on the "HIV causes AIDS" propaganda, but certainly one of the better ones. Among personal testimonies you get some scientific data that, of course, should be enhanced by further reading (mind you, not mainstream articles/books) or further documentaries (see below).

You shouldn't be too surprised to find devastating comments on this documentary - what we deal here with is the invention of a multi-billion-dollar sinkhole, government-/UN-/WHO-funded, where a lot of conventional diseases can be re-labelled as AIDS, and hurrah! be treated with horribly expensive drugs that kill off people. In such a business, there's no place for the truth - that is in the firm hand of the ruling establishment (i.e. pharmaceutical companies and their prostitutes in health department positions), so you won't find one syllable of doubt on the "HIV causes AIDS" fairytale in the Wikipedia or common TV programs.

Let's come to further readings/documentaries:

* www.theperthgroup.com - definitely a cornucopia of information, also for insiders and scientists.

* www.virusmyth.com - a wide-spread info page, worth more than one or two visits.

* "Deconstructing The Myth Of AIDS" (by Gary Null) - simply the best documentary about HIV/AIDS, available as Google Video: video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3983706668483511310#

* "AIDS - die großen Zweifel" (by ARTE, in German, from March 1996), available as Google Video: video.google.de/videoplay?docid=-1939176342201582669#

A Brutal and Mindless Evisceration of all that Star Trek stood for
21 October 2009
The stars are for special effects and some (not all!) actors' performance. This is the utmost concession that I can make to this disaster of a movie.

Because, let's face the truth, it is forgettable like nothing else, and it betrays all the visions and philosophies of TNG and DS9 for the cheap thrill easily induced in an increasingly brainless popcorn audience.

Anything else to say? Well, one last thing: Commercial success, the golden calf of our century, is no challenge for the film industry anymore. Simple screenplays for simple consumers, add some spicy ingredients like young actors, sex, and CGI, finally stir long enough with marketing machinery - and no one of the new generation will complain about this meal which oddly tastes like the last fifty meals served. - The ones who had to vomit will soon die out.

American TV series at their worst: Handling teenage sexuality
5 October 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Was that supposed to be funny? No, awkward and shameful is more like it: how Camille Saroyan began to stammer and act really embarrassed when it came to Michelle dating a boy. And how would you see Booth's interference with the boy as anything else than an unsolicited intimidation by a puritan?

Would you, as a teenager, care to take advice from such persons who have failed to grow up and can't talk matter-of-factly about dating and sex? - Well, I thought so.

Hey, Hollywood writers, get your screenplays with such annoying father/mother characters up-to-date: in times where a lot of teenagers have access to the Internet and to information about sexuality, parents should act more maturely and lead their soon-to-be-adults teenage daughters and sons - not to chastity (that never worked anyway) but to self-determined, responsible decisions that could also welcome sexuality as an absolutely natural and enriching experience.

Your Usual Brain-Numbing American Soap Fare
24 August 2009
Don't get me wrong - this series might get its followers as it has all the ingredients required for being emotionally involved without the need of brain use. But I can't stand this kind of BS anymore:

  • Writers who get by without proper research, without even the slightest knowledge of what they are talking about (Hello! This is supposed to be astronomy, space flight, not a high-school setting);

  • The consequential depiction of immature characters (astronauts? Forget it!) that struggle with the same old same old interpersonal problems and act like clueless teenagers, persons I wouldn't care to know;

  • Abortion is illegal? A series that doesn't criticize this vehemently, or even condones it? A very good indication that the producers want to keep you in line, impose on you their ideological prison;

  • And last but not least: the voice-over by one of the characters near the end of the episode, soaked in some smooth indistinguishable pubertal music, secreting some pseudo-wisdom that isn't even suitable for teenagers.

All in all, forgettable, unimportant stuff that is produced intentionally to keep you drugged with "entertainment", dumb, and numb. Time to wake up, turn off your TV and do something refreshing: take a long summer evening walk with someone, lie on a blanket in the park, or read a good book. It could even be science-fiction.

Nostradamus: 2012 (2009 TV Movie)

Extremely annoying and without real information
10 August 2009
Don't we know the really stereotype movie trailers that are all made the same way:

  • a man with a deep voice "narrates" what the film is about, but actually makes sentences of pseudo-important platitude and nonsensical statements and questions;

  • an over-dramatic background music (drums, horns, yes, even choirs!), suggesting a drama and greatness that later proves to be a forgettable popcorn movie;

  • hundreds of small and rapid cuts in a two-minute trailer, bits of pictures and scenes that you are supposed to make sense of.

And now, dear audience, we extend this bad habit of the film industry to full-feature size! The background music never stops, and the "narrator" is only interrupted by tiny incoherent statements from pseudo-experts - who tell us what? I couldn't summarize the hard facts as there were almost none.

According to my principle that every movie gets 30 minutes to prove itself, this was shut down exactly after that period. It's a waste of time. Go read some good books, even about Nostradamus if you want.

Sweet first project that gets a lot of things right
7 July 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Let me start with the aspects that were great:

1. The Story. The screenplay was funny and original (what can't be said about most of the recent "big" Hollywood productions). It had wonderful dialogs and a believable sequence of events.

2. Fantasy Segments. Showing the readers' fantasies mixed with the story in the lesbian book as black-and-white interludes was very well done.

3. Locations - well chosen.

Points to work on are:

1. Acting. There's no help for it, not even in first projects - the director must demand better performances and, if not possible, look for other actors. The actresses need to convey more soul and expression.

2. Cinematography and Lighting: some parts really looked professional, some others lessened the intensity due to wrong lighting (too flat, without focus/concentration) and wrong choice of frame/detail (here also concentration on relevant aspects, use of close-up shots for emotional parts).

All in all, a highly entertaining movie that shows a lot of talent - keep it up, Ms Tremblay.

I'm glad we've overcome this movie's thoughts
7 July 2009
Warning: Spoilers
First of all to the formal qualities of the movie: it is well done regarding the score, the cinematography and the actors' performances. Nevertheless, it was extremely hard to watch till the end because it made me furious how it depicted men and women. If it's true that, according to other reviewers, the movie truthfully adapts the novella of Lawrence and his opinions, then it doesn't say any good about Lawrence's work either.

As a straight man, I'm not very fond of 90% of men (most of them haven't got the heart, openness, and sensibility that I can easily find in many female friends), but the guy in this movie was extremely disgusting and is shown as a typical 1960s smug, self-opinionated alpha male who doesn't ask a woman once he has made up his mind, and who isn't interested in her thoughts, doubts or feelings (this being another ugly stereotype in this movie: a man doesn't have second thoughts, doubts or too much feelings, while women are so despicably weak that they consist of nothing else). He unperturbedly returns to the farm despite Ellen's letter saying that she doesn't love him and can't marry him, and even then, he doesn't ask, doesn't wonder. What communication skills, what a role model to be married with!

The movie's/Lawrence's hate towards lesbians is clearly shown in the short dialog between Paul and Jill where he wonders why she would be a lesbian as she's "not bad-looking, features are good, nice legs" (we are to understand: you become a lesbian because no man wants you, i.e. as a last resort). Then he tries to "convince" her that it only needs a real man to convert her (yes, he means himself!). What a subtlety! At that moment, if I hadn't been a man, I would have sworn to become lesbian myself.

Furthermore there's the ridiculous tree cutting scene at the end where the movie/Lawrence finally gets rid of the stupid, stubborn dyke who stands in the way of another unhappy, but holy marriage of an idiot with a weak-willed woman who doesn't love him. Here again, the man doesn't falter, whereas Ellen stands around like a prop. Women are such ridiculous sheep-like creatures that they show no solidarity, not even in precarious situations. And they aren't supposed to as their foremost allegiance must be to their husband.

Is that what you wanted us to learn, Mr Lawrence (author) and Mr Rydell (director)? I'm glad we've overcome the stench of those times and thoughts.

Bumpy ride, impressive photography
5 July 2009
This project movie (50 min) suffers from some shortcomings:

1. An interesting plot, not only a single idea, is essential if you want the audience to go with the story.

2. The narrative is, to say the least, bumpy. More work on the connection from one scene to the next is needed.

3. Take actresses who can act. The leads were unsatisfactory.

One aspect, though, was quite nicely done: the photography. The director and/or the director of photography manage to create a mosaic of black-and-white and sepia takes, intermingled with other sequences with saturated colors, that made the movie quite enjoyable to watch.

Lesbian movie with little plot and emphasis on love scenes
5 July 2009
Warning: Spoilers
FULL SUMMARY (skip this if you haven't seen the movie yet):

Alex (Katherine Woodman) visits the grave of her lover Emma Jo who has died of a speed overdose. In gloom and fury towards fate, she sets out to return to her home town, but her car won't start. A friendly and attractive groundkeeper, Haley (Emma-Jane Mezher), diagnoses a failure of the carburator the repair of which could take days (!). As it is vacation time and the only motel nearby is likely to be fully booked, she offers Alex to stay at her house. Alex grumpily accepts.

While Alex is taking a shower, Haley stumbles over the articles and photos of Alex's lover and realizes her guest is lesbian. But Alex isn't excited about telling details about Emma Jo. The next day they go out shopping and on return in the kitchen share a first kiss.

After a passionate night Alex is having dreams and feels she is betraying her love towards Emma Jo. So at dawn she drives back to her grave and assures Emma Jo of her never-ending love in order to be free to move on.

END SUMMARY

This is a short lesbian movie (40 minutes) that has the look and feel of a first effort in directing. There's nothing special about it, everything tastefully done, and glamorous nude love scenes with beautiful participants who, alas, aren't very good actresses.

Abysmal, superficial and superfluous piece of *%$#+@ (I mean, time waste)!
16 April 2009
I have one procedure with movies: they get 30 minutes of good will to prove that they are worth watching. With some films, when I'm not quite sure, this "probation" time is prolonged to 45 minutes.

So, I'll tell you what: "I Can't Think Straight" had me bored to tears in 20 minutes! The screenplay is dull and highly predictable, so don't expect any surprises. But it gets worse: the performance of the two main leads was gruesome. The question is not whether they should join acting classes - but whether they would be admitted.

What remains? Here are my recommendations: spend your time with something useful, maybe an evening walk with your partner in this early, mild spring, or watch an excellent lesbian movie like "Fingersmith", but not THIS movie.

A good movie if you don't know the 1995 BBC mini-series
23 March 2009
When this movie came into the theaters, I was profoundly pleased with the performance of the lead actors (Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen) and the director alike. I would have voted 8 or 9, then. Compared with food, this was a fine dinner for two with an agreeable wine.

Well, years later, i.e. last week, I happened to watch the BBC mini-series from 1995, and alas, I must say: I was overwhelmed by that piece of art, by its richness in detail, its pure perfection. You get an aperitif, a delicious soup, a four-course meal, each course accompanied by an other exquisite wine, then a plate with a dozen cheeses, finally concluded by tiramisu, cappuccino and a cognac.

Just to make sure that I was not delusional, I read one third of Jane Austen's novel (it's in the public domain so you can legally download it from the Internet). It's nothing short of magic how the BBC version managed to translate the full "Pride and Prejudice" into pictures. This magic is not possible in Hollywood-compatible two hours.

Each version has its legitimacy. It's up to you to decide which kind of dinner you are planning to have.

"Driven by Events" Error - Again and Again!
29 December 2008
"Weeds" began quite promising, had an unusual, subversive feel and good comedic moments - in the first two seasons. Then they started to stuff the show with events, and even more events, and even more... And forgot on the way to tell the audience about the characters who experience that, how they feel, how the events change them, how they grow and how their relationships are affected by that.

Like in so many newer TV series, the writers lack emotional and developmental consistency. The characters have stopped growing, they live through so many incidents and yet don't gain one iota of wisdom, even the sympathetic ones do the same stupid things the others do. Where's the sense in this, other than spending 45 to 60 minutes of your life with an episode that leaves you unsatisfied and has no relevance to what you think and feel?
