Leapin’ Lizards! The original cavemen vs. dinosaurs saga is a winner — if viewer involvement trumps visual effects, it’s got a narrow lead over the Hammer/Harryhausen remake. Victor Mature, Carole Landis and Lon Chaney Jr. all made career hay out of their weeks spent running in loincloths, out in the desert. And Vci’s new disc is a terrific UCLA Archive restoration.

“Am I decent?” They said that Ginger Rogers gave Fred Astaire sex appeal, but the teaming of Astaire and Rita Hayworth is something else. Columbia’s 1941 release is a weak service comedy until the dancing starts, at which point it becomes one of the better musicals of the year – and the breakout vehicle for Ms. Hayworth.

As if the Lord of the Rings films weren't good enough...just imagine them with David Bowie in them! Dominic Monaghan, who played the hobbit Merry in the films, recalled the time he saw David Bowie coming out of a reading during his first audition for the beloved films. "I was at the Hubbard's, which is a pretty notorious casting agency office in London, doing an audition for Lord of the Rings, and when it ended I went over and talked to John Hubbard, who was running the audition, and he said, 'Hey, it went really well," he told the Huffington Post.

Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings could have been interestingly different if David Bowie were cast in it. The actor, who played the famous Goblin King in Labyrinth, auditioned for a role in the fantasy epic. The news came from Dominic Monaghan, who said he saw Bowie go in for an audition. The actor told The Huffington Post:
"I was at the Hubbard's, which is a pretty notorious casting agency office in London, doing an audition for Lord of the Rings, and when it ended I went over and talked to John Hubbard, who was running the audition, and he said, 'Hey, it went really well. You should wait around for 5 or 10 mins. We'll give you some feedback. I thought, 'Oh, Ok, cool, and I sat in the reception office. As I was reading a magazine waiting, David Bowie came in and signed his little list and went in.

Here's a little more substance to the long-standing rumor that David Bowie could have appeared in The Lord of the Rings: Dominic Monaghan, who played hungry hobbit Merry in the films, remembered seeing Bowie during his audition at Hubbard's, a casting agency in London. "When it ended I went over and talked to John Hubbard, who was running the audition, and he said, 'Hey, it went really well. You should wait around for five or 10 minutes. We'll give you some feedback," Monaghan told the Huffington Post. "I thought, Oh, okay, cool and I sat in the reception office. As I was reading a magazine waiting, David Bowie came in and signed his little list and went in. And I'm assuming he read for Gandalf. I can't think of anything else he would've read for. He may have read for something else, but I'm a huge David Bowie fan, and...

No disrespect to the great Hugo Weaving, but David Bowie would've been an awesome Elrond. Bowie was already the Goblin King in "Labyrinth," and would've fit right into the world of "The Lord of the Rings." But, in one of Hollywood's many "what ifs," he wasn't cast in the franchise at all.
Dominic Monaghan, who played Merry, is now promoting Season 3 of his Travel Channel show, "Wild Things With Dominic Monaghan," and he talked to the Huffington Post about Bowie's Lotr audition:

South By Southwest is largely awesome as a condition of place. Austin is an amazing case study that has much going right. It is a city of filmmakers, lovers and scholars with public and private support. An organization with the most visible influence is the Austin Film Society, which sponsors filmmaker financially through the new Texas Filmmakers Fund (partly funding two strong films I saw – Where Soldiers Come From and Five Time Champion) amongst other initiatives. I think SXSW Film has grown partly because Texas filmmaking has grown. There is a large display of strong work including the festival’s Lone Star States showcase. This is as much a local festival as it a national festival (and shockingly less so an international festival, with very little work from other non-traditional Hollywood funding bodies like Europe).
The flexibility of SXSW to discover new voices is one of their leading strengths. If...

Hello, everyone—
I’m sorry for the delay in writing, but here I am, finally.
Before talking about this star-studded event, I—like an award winner (which is what I felt like)—need to give some thanks. First, to Db for helping to arrange this. Second, to Comedy Central for giving Red Carpet and Press Room access to a blogger—and to the very pleasant Chris, who handed me my treasured credentials. Third to…well, as always, to Stephen and staff, for consistently creating something worth writing about and getting excited about. There are not many people in this world that can make you laugh hysterically and think seriously at the same time—and then do it over and over again, four nights a week, many weeks a year, seven years and counting.
I have to admit I felt pretty nervous before going, and unsure of what the situation would be.

Adele will retake the #1 position on the Billboard 200 next week after dropping down to the #2 slot last week. Sales of Adele's 21 album were down 26 percent, but it still manages to retake the top thanks to 98,000 units moved, pushing the British R&B smoothie over the 750,000 mark after four weeks, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan.
That was enough to keep veteran punks Rise Against down at #2 with the debut of their latest, Endgame, which sold 85,000 copies to edge out last week's #1, Lupe Fiasco's Lasers, which sits at #3 on sales of 47,000 as sales dropped by 77 percent. The only other debut in the top 10 comes from Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker, whose all-solo bow, Give the Drummer Some, lands at #9 (28,000).

Chicago punk band Rise Against play some of the most caustic, abrasive, politically-minded punk rock in the game today, and yet they still manage to be best-sellers. Their passion and commitment to both righteous causes and extra-loud buzzsaw riffs is back again for the group's sixth album Endgame. Their previous two albums (2006's The Sufferer & The Witness and 2008's Appeal to Reason) began to push their sound into dramatically different places, and that trend continues on Endgame, their most dynamic release yet.
But where do the critics stand on Rise Against's ever-evolving sound and blood-and-guts commitment to change? The enthusiasm is there, but some people remain hesitant about the whole Rise Against aesthetic. In a three star review, Rolling Stone's Jon Dolan wrote, "Rise Against's mastery of anthemic punk rock is second only to their mastery of being pissed off," also noting that the sound expansion is probably...

The Spider-Man Broadway musical, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, has received a lot of attention lately...though most of it has been on the negative side of things. With delays, production problems, and a slew of cast injuries over the last few months, many see the pricey show heading down a path toward certain doom.
However fate sees fit to treat ol' Spidey's Broadway run, what other odd properties could be transformed into potentially successful musicals? Brothers Jon and Al Kaplan have some suggestions, and they've even made videos to prove how well they would work.
Their latest venture is dubbed Predator: The Musical, and it adds a catchy musical number to scenes from the movie. Judging by the video, this could definitely work as a big Broadway production -- click on over now to see for yourself!

Their latest venture is dubbed Predator: The Musical, and it adds a catchy musical number to scenes from the movie. Judging by the video, this could definitely work as a big Broadway production -- click on over now to see for yourself!

Craig speaks fondly about his soon-to-be-former co-star, and hand-picks Steve’s replacement!
The Office’s fearless leader, Steve Carrell, is officially exiting the Dunder Mifflin building and although he’ll be missed, star Craig Robinson says the show must go on!
“The captain of the ship is leaving, so we’re going to try and ride the ship. The producers are going to give us that shot, to make the ship right, so we’ll see what happens” Craig explained to HollywoodLife.com exclusively at the “King Kong 360 3-D” event in Universal City, Calif. June 29.
The 38-year-old star does admit he learned a lot from Steve, who plays The Office’s annoying boss Michael Scott to his warehouse manager Darryl Philbin, during their seven seasons together on the hit NBC show. “It’s a very sorcerer-to-apprentice relationship. I’m watching him. He’s got the moves, he’s Michael Jordan in the fourth quarter.

Usually, love is in the air in February because of the crappy holiday called Valentine’s Day. Bah! Our love is in the theaters, and Hollywood, after a dumping month in January, realizes this month can be a mini-summer month, as we see a few big budgeted films this month being released. But fear not lovers. Donny Broussard, Killer Film’s fearless head honcho, and Jon Peters, the site’s senior writer, will tell you what to see and skip with their usual wacky banter. So let’s get started!
(February 4th)

The IMDb plot (here): “A diving team experiences a life-threatening crisis during an expedition to an unexplored cave system.”
3D Option? Yes
Donny: I’m not at all interested in this flick. It looks like a boring direct-to-dvd movie that is capitalizing on James Cameron’s name. Skip it.

Lucky us. The untitled Bond 23 just got a release date (here) at long last, and we’re really excited here at Killer Film. Along with the exotic locations, the gadgets, the cars, the theme song, the license to kill, we especially love the Bond Girls. Whether they’re the main character or a sexy supporting one, the Bond Girl is one of the most important aspects. It’s still to early to know who will be cast as the Bond Girls in Bond 23, but that’s why we are here. Donny Broussard and Jon Peters offer their picks at actresses they would love to see in a Bond Girl role!
Jon’s Picks:
- Freida Pinto (from Slumdog Millionaire, Rise of the Apes)
To me, she is the most obvious choice. Young, gorgeous, and can really act, Freida Pinto could be a main star in the upcoming film.

The BBC has released new character portraits from the real Being Human. I mean ... the original Being Human. Yesterday was the thirtieth anniversary of one of the most influential moments in pop culture history. On January 12th, 1981 ... Dynasty debuted on ABC. Now comes word that the show's creator Richard Shapiro is shopping a big-screen Dynasty prequel, which will take place in the 60's, not the 80's. Um ... what's the point? Besides, I've had it with remakes. Especially when there's no way they can ever do justice to this:
The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council has ruled that the 1985 Dire Straits song "Money For Nothing" cannot be played in Canada unless the word faggot is edited out. Personally I've never much cared for the song, (I much prefer "Sultans of Swing"), but in the context of the lyrics (it's the point of view of an ignorant delivery guy making custom kitchen deliveries...

I don’t think there is a singular film-maker I’ve found myself having written more about than Australia’s own Dr. George Miller. And now, writing this, I’m still not quite certain of the best way to introduce him, if indeed such a thing is necessary at all. The last of cinema’s thoroughly modern myth-makers – those implicit, anthropological followers of Campbell and Jung, before George Lucas arrived and gunked up the works with his clunky concretizations – and a college lecturer on the indelible powers of those myths on our collectives psyches and their places in modern cinema, in his spare time. The single-handed spokesman for Australia’s burgeoning film industry, and their self-proclaimed answer to our own Steven Spielberg – although, that’s an arguable comparison, I think. Here is a director whose output has equaled one film in the past ten years – and, just one other film...

Apollo 18, the found footage film produced by Timur Bekmambetov, has changed their release date; instead of the planned March release (of which there are already posters hanging around movie theaters advertising this), The Weinstein Company has moved it to April 22nd [Shock Till You Drop]. That means that it will follow another big TWC Spring release, Scream 4, which comes out a week before. There is no real reason given for this change, but if I were a betting man, I would place my chips on the fact that the movie has barely even finished filming yet. Back when the original poster was released, I was confused on how a movie that hadn’t even really been filming yet could get such a quick turnaround, especially one that I assume would have to feature some sort of visual effects (it’s about aliens and all). With this extra time, the people behind Apollo 18...

Science fiction is colliding with reality again: Doctor Who fans will know and love his Sonic Screwdriver, used to get out of many a scrape. Hey, kids! Time to get caught up on the news while Stephen and the rest of Team Colbert take a well-deserved break from the show, which I’m sure they all need very much to complete their recovery from Rally weekend. Our round-up today includes one final (I hope) Rally item, some comments from Robin Williams, an early look at some end-of-the-year sort of things, and word of a possible trip to Florida for Jon and Stephen in the spring. Settle back with a beverage, and enjoy!

Doctor Who spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures is now in its fourth season on Cbbc.
Its star, Elisabeth Sladen, 62, has been playing the intrepid journalist on and off since 1973.
She first appeared as Sarah Jane Smith alongside Third Doctor Jon Pertwee, and remained in the show when Tom Baker stepped into the Tardis as the regenerated Fourth Doctor.
Sladen left the show in 1976, when the Doctor was summoned to his homeworld Gallifrey and could not take Sarah with him.
The character then appeared in the 1981 spin-off pilot K-9 and Company, in the 1983 anniversary episode The Five Doctors, in a 1993 Children in Need special and in the 1995 spin-off film Downtime.
Sladen returned to the show with an appearance in the revived Doctor Who series in 2006, encountering Tenth Doctor David Tennant in a successful reunion that led to new spin-off the The Sarah Jane Adventures, which debuted in 2007.

Red Directed by: Robert Schwentke Written by: Jon & Erich Hoeber (screenplay), Warner Ellis and Cully Hamner (graphic novel) Starring: Bruce Willis, Mary-Louise Parker, John Malkovich, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, Karl Urban, Brian Cox, Richard Dreyfuss Red is bland. Jilting its vibrant namesake, director Robert Schwentke’s pallid comic book movie is about as exciting as a grayscale rainbow. It’s a self-celebratory slog and one of the longest hour and fifty minutes I’ve spent at the movies this year. In my defense, its trailer was a calculated work of CIA-level deception — each moment is expertly chosen to give false impression that the whole is mindless fun. But mindless fun is only half right. There’s next to nothing to say about a film this unremittingly boring. I’d stop just short of calling it a failure, but the most incredible thing about Red is that such a lackluster script attracted such high-profile talent.

Proof that, despite the hammering Apple got for the flaws on its iPhone 4, it's still the smartphone of choice. At&T today released figures showing that 5.2 million iPhones were activated on its network in the last quarter: 400,000 units more than analysts had predicted. Translation: despite At&T's reputation (Disconnecting People?) its iPhone monopoly means it's drawing people away from other carriers.

Elisabeth Moss and Jon Hamm posed under the Cannes sun this afternoon, after stepping out for an event together last night. They're in France showcasing the latest season of Mad Men at the Mipcom trade show, where Jon spoke about getting the series into new countries. He said, "AMC's still a relatively small network, so anything that we can do as actors to broaden that audience is helpful in the grand scheme of things." The show is winding down with only two new episodes left this season, but there's still plenty of drama for their characters with Peggy's workplace issues and Don's womanizing ways. In reality, Jon's been focusing on new projects like his upcoming Saturday Night Live hosting gig and a live appearance on 30 Rock. Jon and Elisabeth's costar John Slattery is also lined up for a guest spot on Tina Fey's comedy, and he'll once...

Detroit — Thursday (September 2) was a night that the people of Detroit will never forget. Eminem, who hadn't performed in his hometown for years, co-headlined a show at Comerica Park with Jay-z. And if you ask Em's fans, it was more than worth the wait.
"It was pretty sweet," said Jon Bitz. "Eminem was out there, doing his thing. I thought it was pretty much the best concert I've ever been to."
Jay-z and Eminem pulled out all the stops at the show, which was chock-full of surprise guests. Local resident Juvenal Gutierrize said the re-emergence of Dr. Dre sent a number of ladies into a frenzy. "It went crazy when Dr. Dre came out. A bunch of girls lost their panties," said Gutierrize. "There was panties flying all over.

It was reported a few months ago that Robert Sigl would be doing his first feature in 10 years having done a bit of tv (including the scifi show Lexx) and we've got a few more details on what sounds like a Caligula-style horror from the director himself.
